Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
Didn't know how the conditions would be, so cancelled a charter with one of my north jersey clients - didn't want them making the trip down for lousy conditions and possible confined bay trip. So when I asked Luke and wife Jennifer if they wanted to take a peak outside in the morning to look for bass (conditions permitting) - got the green light. I guess Luke was anticipating the trip more than me, because he was hitting me on the chest to "wake up" at 530am. We checked the jetty, but it was unfishable with the tidal current and 3-5ft S/SE swell (5-7 sec apart). We decided to take a quick ride north and found some birds working with no other boats around - we ended with about 20 striped bass in 1.5hrs. Unfortunately, none of the bass reached the 28in mark (all between 20-27.5inches). Luke reeled in his first (20inch) and second-ever striped bass (27.5in) - so proud!! All fish were caught on live bait and the S&S Flutterjig (sand eel pattern) jigged close to the bottom. Finally some fish taken on the jig - hopefully the influx of some different baitfish other than bunker will start the fall jigging for bass.
