10/30/14 End of October Backcountry Fishing Report

 | By Seamus on 10/30/2014 10:25:20 AM | Views (72)

October is almost over and another month is in the books.  The weather has been much nicer this past week with a bit of coolness in the air.  Winds haven't been too crazy we did have a couple windy days after the rain left us 5 or 6 days ago, but since then it's been light winds and a little breeze at some points but good weather overall.  Fishing has been pretty good we've been seeing more redfish and snook show up in the everglades and finding them in the deeper creeks, island moats, and usual fall & winter time haunts.  Bait has been thick we've been finding pilchards on the shorelines of islamorada, there has still been some mullet in the backcountry, and of course the fall bait run around the mainland you can find all sorts of different kinds of baits.  Tarpon have been hit or miss we still have not really seen a ton of tarpon action on the bait balls and such moving along the mainland like we normally do during the fall bait run.  There have been a few though and we've been catching some.  I had an angler a few days ago we tarpon fished all day and literally the last bait on the boat we put out and finally got a bite and landed a large 130+ lb fish.  Though sharks kept us busy throughout the day.  The last few days I went fun fishing one day we had a great day deep in the everglades catching 15 or so nice size redfish and 3 snook.  Things started out slow that day with the last of the falling tide but as soon as we got some incoming water fishing was good for the last couple hours.  Yesterday we caught nice pilchards near home and banged out lots of nice snook for about an hour and a half, we finished up trying for tarpon but no bites though again sharks kept us busy and we did get a nice little hammerhead too.  Capt. Mike Venezia reported good fishing around flamingo yesterday they had snook action and caught a couple redfish as well, plus got their limit of mangrove snappers for dinner.  Capt. Ben Ekblom has been having some good fishing on the patch reefs they've been getting lots of juvenile muttons with the occasional keeper, some porgies, yellowtails, jacks, and the other assortments too.  He had some good action with small blacktips on light tackle with young kids the other day too.  We are getting a real cold front this weekend temperatures dipping into the low 60s so that should really kick start some of our winter time fishing.  Look for tarpon fishing to slow down, really the next 3 months are probably the least likely to have productive tarpon fishing, but of course with a string of 80 degree days that can change.  Snook, redfish, drum, mackerel, cobia, and more should take the place of that and it's a lot of fun fishing the backcountry and gulf this time of year!

Capt. Rick Stanczyk
