12/25/14 Late December Fishing Report Islamorada Backcountry

 | By Seamus on 12/25/2014 8:00:03 AM | Views (242)

Merry Christmas everyone!  It's getting to the end of december fishing in islamorada and things have been pretty good on the water.  The last week things have warmed up and we've enjoyed highs around 80 degrees and low 70s in the evenings.  The wind had been a slight breeze out of the south close to Islamorada, but fairly flat calm in the backcountry of the everglades.  This made the patch reef fishing tough for the smaller boats, but some of the larger ones were able to squeeze out there.  Capt. Ben Ekblom had a good day on the patches with plenty of action from a variety of fish.  Including some nice cobia he said they got their limit one day and his clients had a great dinner.  Capt. Rick Stanczyk had a couple days out there being able to enjoy his larger center console style boat on the inshore patches.  Both days produced plenty of porgies, hogfish, snapper, and they even got a big 20 lb jack crevelle on light tackle which was a 30 minute battle!  He also had a couple days in the backcountry, breaking things up with mackerel fishing in the morning, and a few trout, ladyfish, and some snook later in the day.  Capt. Bill Bassett had a good catch of hogfish several days ago when things were a bit calmer on the patch reefs.    He also said they went way 'around the corner' to fish the deep everglades, and had some good action with redfish and a handful of snook.  Capt. Mike Venezia reported some nice mangrove snappers around the backcountry islands the other day, as well as a good mackerel bite in the gulf out west.  Christmas week craziness starts tomorrow and it will be busy down here!  We do however have some boats still available throughout the weekend and through New Years.  If your looking to get out on the water give us a call and we will try to make it happen!  The weather looks to be fantastic all week and it is nice and warm.  305-664-2461
