January islamorada fishing report backcountry 2015

 | By Seamus on 1/2/2015 8:30:07 AM | Views (398)

Happy new year everyone!  The weather is gorgeous and the fish are biting here in Islamorada, Florida this january.  With the warm weather there has been a little bit of everything going on really.  Today Capt. Rick Stanczyk and Capt. John Johansen had a two boat trip with a family from New Jersey.  Fishing was pretty good we got into a decent spanish mackerel bite just inside everglades national park, it took a little while and some work but we got them biting a bit.  Later on we parted ways Capt. John had some action with snappers on the patch reefs and some sharks in the channels close to home.  Capt. Rick fished some of the gulf channels and had plenty of large blacktips, as well as a hammer head and a nice 20 lb cobia.  We saw some tarpon rolling though did not get any action out of them.  Capt. Bill Bassett today had some mackerels and big snappers around the islands they caught for dinner.  Capt. Mike Bassett had some good mackerel action out in the gulf and a big lemon shark as well as a nice grouper.  Several days ago Capt. Jeff Beeler and Capt. Rick also had another group trip, we had a pick of snook and redfish in the everglades, pitching shrimp inside the canals and mangrove shorelines.  Later that day Capt. Jeff got a nice tarpon and Capt. Rick got some sharks.  Capt. Jeff had some nice snook yesterday as well.  This week Capt. Vinnie Biondoletti had a nice tarpon for some kids around the bridges in Islamorada.  Capt. Jim Willcox has had some action with big critters including 'mud marlin' and goliath groupers in the gulf, as well as some redfish action in the everglades park too.  January is a great time of year to come down, beat the crowds of 'season' in february and the fishing can be very good!  Right now many spring time options are happening with the warm weather, though don't know how long that will last.  Tarpon are definitely a possibility!
