The winter cod run has extended into the spring, and if last year is any indication that fishing could continue for another month or so. The Jamaica II from Brielle had a good Friday catch topped by Ray Bryant of South Orange with eight cod up to 16 pounds. Capt. Ryan Bogan said Saturday was rough, and his fares had to deal with a strong current. Some cod were caught all around the boat on Sunday, when a 21-pounder took the pool. Jody McCloud of Howell bagged six cod up to 14 pounds. The cean was calm, but the full moon currents were strong.

Capt. Ken Gallop had to fight through spiny dogfish on Sunday, but the Glenn Roberts party caught 20 cod up to 15 pounds on wrecks 15 miles offshore from Big Kid out of Brielle Yacht Club.

Capt. Mike ran the Islander out of Barnegat Inlet to 30-to-50-miles wrecks, and found the dogfish to be "brutal". He did better with cod by drifting over the wrecks as 40 to 50 keepers were boated, including a few over 20 pounds plus a 9-pound tautog. Sand eels were abundant, drawing whales and dolphins to the area.

The Canyon Runner has been catching lots of bluefin tuna off North Carolina, and has one open spot on Friday aboard he 48 Viking for $299. Looking ahead, there are two spots open on April 12, one spot on April 18, and four on April 20. Call 732 272-4445 for information and reservations.
