Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
Just got back in town last night and fished a full day today. Was out of town for a week, we did miss some of the coldest weather we've had here in the Keys probably since the 'cold freeze' of 2010. A couple nights that dipped down into the 40s, brrr! Though right afterwards there was several slick calm gorgeous days where things warmed up and fishing got very good. Capt. Mike Venezia reported good patch reef fishing during the cold spell with porgy, hogfish, snapper, and grouper action. When things slicked off after the cold Capt. Skip Nielsen had very good permit fishing, he reported catching multiple permit out on the patches with customers Randy Soth, Peter Aiello, Matt Crawford, and his wife Cyd. Capt. John Johansen also reported good permit fishing during that window of time. Capt. Jeff Beeler had some very good fly tarpon fishing they had 5 bites and landed a couple back in the everglades. Capt. Bill Bassett reported good tarpon action at the bridges down south as well, they had 3 fish in the air one day. Capt. Mike Bassett reported a good mackerel bite in the gulf, and had some decent snook and drum action back in the everglades one day as well. Today we fished in the backcountry and around town here, the wind kicked up hard out of the southwest - not ideal conditons for much. Though we found a good school of mullet and were able to catch plenty. We had good shark action in the back, found some muds with ladyfish and jacks to bend the light rods, caught a black drum fishing the mangrove edges, and finished the day around town with a 'mud marlin' and a 90 lb tarpon. Looks like winds are suppose to go back to the north/northeast the nexts couple days, but it shouldn't get very cold. This should be better for the backcountry and patch reefs though probably not great for early season tarpon fishing. Though as the wind goes more east that should get better too!
Capt. Rick Stanczyk
