Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
The past week tarpon fishing season was in full swing in Islamorada. The previous week with the early morning weaker falling tide we had some trouble with finding and catching mullet. Even the guys who catch and sell live bait in the mornings were having trouble finding them. Tarpon were still caught fairly good however though we were fishing some other baits such as crabs, pinfish, and dead bait. The last week things changed mullet have been showing up good in the mornings making for easier bait catching, and easier more prouctive fishing. Locally the tarpon fishing has been very good, you have not had to run very far to find hungry schools of fish. Capt. Jeff Beeler, Capt. Dave Morris, Capt. John Johansen, Capt. Dave Sisung, Capt. Mike Venezia, Capt. Rick Stanczyk, Capt. Chris Daly, Capt. Skip Nielsen, Capt. Mike Bassett, Capt. Vinnie Biondoletti, and more have all reported good local tarpon fishing. Both mornings and evenings have been productive. Capt. Dave Morris had Pat Purcell the Boston Herald president out and he along with Britta Schulze both landed a nice tarpon. Capt. John Johansen had Shawn land a large tarpon with him. Capt. Bill Bassett reported good fly fishing conditions with his long time customer Charlie Owens. They landed a big 120 lb fish after a 2 hour battle on the fly a couple days ago. Elsewhere in the backcountry fishing has been good too. Capt. Clyde Upchurch reported a good snook bite several days fishing around the islands along with nice snappers and trout for dinner. Tarpon however is the main objective for most angler this time of year. The fishing has been hot. If your down in the area and looking to go short notice, the evening is often a great time to go and many guides that are booked solid during the days may be available for an evening.
