Fishing Fort Lauderdale on Happy Day Today with Capt. Zsak

John Lopes and his kids, Jasper and Kira, from New Jersey along with their friends, Daniel and Mathew Cossa from New York, chartered the Topshotfishing team to do some deep sea big game sport fishing in Fort Lauderdale, FL.  After vacationing here in Fort Lauderdale Beach, their next adventure was today’s fishing expedition.  Today winds were out of the south at 7 mph, seas running 1-3 ft., temperatures in the high 80’s with a slight overcast.

After greeting the Lopes’ and Cossa’s as they boarded the boat, Jasper asked if the Sharks were running.  I told him that we would save some time for later in the charter to do some Shark fishing.

We started out trolling the reefs with two plainers down, one with a 2 ½ blue reflector drone spoon and the other with an orange and brown sea witch in front of a double hooked Bonito strip.  For four surface baits we went with two Ballyhoos and two Bonito strips.  As we trolled the reefs in Fort Lauderdale, going from one artificial wreck to another, all the anglers took turns bringing in their catches, a total of 7 Bonitos, 2 Kingfish, one short and 2 Barracudas.  The Bonitos have no food value but they are extremely important since they are used as Bonito strips for bait, which 80% of our fish are caught on.  For those that do not know how to make strip baits, go to your tackle store and ask them or search on YouTube.

It was time now to go out to one of the deeper artificial wrecks that sits in 350 ft. of water, which is a 445 ft. freighter sunk back in 1987.  My plans were to put out a surface bait, a midrange bait and a bottom bait.  With little to no current it is a good technique to set up over wrecks.  After putting out the surface bait and letting out the midrange bait, the Shark gods were on Jasper’s side.  A Shark made his appearance attacking the surface bait – hooked up!!!!  The lines peeled off the 80 International Reel – Jasper was our angler and hopped into the fighting chair.  After a while, Kira took over and shared the experience.  Twenty-five minutes later, our mate, Matt, wired the Hammerhead Shark for picture taking.  The hook was removed and the Shark was set free to fight again.   .

With a happy family and friend’s portrait, it was time to head back to the dock.  All the anglers went into the a/c salon to relax on the ride back to the dock at Bahia Mar, 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
