Fishing Fort Lauderdale with Topshotfishing and Capt. Zsak

Todd DeMoss and his three sons, Jack, Gage and Sam, from Iowa chartered the Topshotfishing team to do some deep sea big game sport fishing in Fort Lauderdale.  Winds were out of the east at 15 mph, seas running 3-5 ft., temperatures in the mid 80’s with blue skies.  As the DeMoss’ boarded the boat, their enthusiasm was high – the boys requested to catch something big.

With that in mind, we stopped to purchase a dozen live Goggle Eyes from T&T Bait located in the inlet in Fort Lauderdale. Fifteen minutes later lines were in 120 ft. of water at the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale, 1.8 miles from shore.  We started to troll south of Fort Lauderdale with two plainers down and four surface baits.

As we trolled the reefs, missing one bite on the plainer, Captain Nate could see a nice color change forming off shore so we headed towards that color change.  When we got out there, we were in 430 feet of water; it was a beautiful avenue for any predator to come down – it went from a clean green color to an indigo blue.  We set up two kites with three live Goggle Eyes, one Shark bait from the kite and one Shark bait on the bottom.  Our first strike was from the bottom Shark bait – the rod bent over and then went slack – A swing and a miss!  As the anglers were focusing on the live Goggle Eye baits from the kite, three Sailfish popped up – dorsal fin out of the water chasing the left short kite bait.  All the boys were amazed with the Sailfish swimming freely in the water chasing the bait.  Hooked up!!!  Sailfish on!!!!  He came out of the water and showed his magnificent colors.  Sam and Gage took turns bringing in the Sailfish to the side of the boat – pictures were taken and the Sailfish was released.

We reset on the same color change.  A few minutes later, a dorsal fin appeared belonging to a Hammerhead Shark.  The Shark ate the bait from the kite and the fun began.  Jack and Gage took turns fighting the Shark while the other two kites were still out.  Fifteen minutes into fighting the Shark, a black shadow appeared on the left short.  Hooked up!! Sailfish on!!!  Todd was the angler on this Sailfish.  As the two boys brought the Hammerhead to the side of the boat, Dave, our mate, released the Shark after pictures were taken – an estimated 200 lb. Hammerhead.  Now it was up to Todd to bring his Sailfish in, which he did.  Pictures were taken and the Sailfish was released to fight again.

It was time to head back to the dock.  The DeMoss family fulfilled their wish and did a great job bringing in their catch - the anglers retired into the a/c salon for the trip back to the Bahia Mar Dock, 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
