Weather Warning

 | By Seamus on 1/7/2017 10:11:23 PM | Views (1491)
IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO ALL MARINA CLIENTS

PLEASE BE AWARE OF A POTENTIAL EXTREME WEATHER EVENT ON SATURDAY 4 JUNE.

INITIAL ADVICE RECEIVED IS THAT NORTH EASTERLY WINDS MAY REACH NEAR GALE FORCE UP TO 40 KNOTS LATE SATURDAY AFTERNOON AND INTO SUNDAY MORNING.

THERE MAY ALSO BE A POSSIBILITY OF STORM SURGE ON TOP OF A HIGH TIDE OF 2.66m AT 7.55pm.

PLEASE TAKE THE FOLLOWING ACTIONS:

1. Check your lines. Double up mooring lines by running duplicate lines to alternative cleats. The alternative ropes should be run slightly slack to ensure they are only required if the primary mooring lines fail. Fit chafe preventers.

2. Remember, man-made synthetic fibres such as polyethylene, polypropylene and polyester deteriorate in sunlight. The deterioration is usually unnoticeable until the rope is subjected to stress. If in doubt replace.

3. Check all boat cleats. If there is any doubt, secure additional lines to other structural customers and fittings e.g. winches, sampson posts, etc.

4. Reduce wind loadings to a minimum. Remove all excess deck gear including lifebuoys, dinghys, biminis, etc. and stow below.

5. Remove all furled sails and covers. If this is not possible, double wrap and tie all sails and covers securely.

OVERALL CONSIDERATION

In the event of a storm/cyclone and high winds, personal safety is of prime importance. Flying debris can be lethal. All non-essential crew (and children) should leave the marina.

Subject: Heads up on weekend weather.

Hello

A developing weather pattern on the weekend could well provide some extreme conditions on the water in SE Qld this weekend, particularly Saturday, with the worst of it Saturday night at this stage.

A deep trough with embedded lows is forecast to move off the coast and wedge against a big high that’s centered in the Tasman Sea near New Zealand.

The gradient between these systems will be acute and strong to gale force NE winds are expected to develop during Saturday and peak overnight.

The modelling brief I got from the BOM this morning indicated that on Saturday afternoon and night, there could be NE winds of up to 50kts at 2,000ft,  which could mean NE winds of up to 40kts at sea level.

The predicted strong NE winds will create a big and powerful NE swell, which will make offshore boating, crossing bars, or going around Comboyuro Point potentially very dangerous and combined with the big high tide on Saturday night will cause beach erosion on Gold and Sunshine Coast beaches.

This outlook, combined with a 2.66m high tide at Brisbane Bar Cutting around 7pm on Saturday could create problems with boats on moorings and in marinas and there is a need to check and possibly double up mooring lines, make sure all loose items on boats or in boat yards are securely lashed down or stowed away … and boats on hard stand storage are lashed down.

Given the size of the tide and the predicted wind and swell conditions, there is also a strong likelihood that there will be a storm surge which will create a much higher tide than predicted and add to water movement in marinas, which combined with the wind, could cause boats to be joggling around a lot on moorings and in marina berths.

If that outlook isn’t bad enough, rain is also expected, which will make things even more difficult.

I do stress that weather forecasting is an inexact science and this situation could change, but thought it was worth forewarning you of the potential situation, so you can take appropriate action.

Cheers
Brownie
