Fishing Report 4/08/2017

Fishing the wash around our headlands have anglers taking on our hard fighting drummer and grouper

With some excellent results as can be seen on our cover picture with Jason Smiths beautiful specimen taken on a recent trip out with the crew of ocean hunter sports fishing.

Targeting these fish can be done with a medium rod and some twenty pound line, a small ball sinker and a good strong hook fishing bread and prawns in a berley trail and not forgetting that kings feed in the wash also and will sometimes take a simple prawn so hold on tight.

On our rock ledges and platforms luderick are the main target at the moment when the swell permits.

While weed and cabbage are not always available anglers are using artificially tied cabbage and weed flies and having some good results

For those anglers fishing around north harbour among the boat moorings trying to get a feed of bream and flathead on soft plastics it can be a very frustrating time as a school of chopper tailor are on the rampage tearing the plastics apart.

The beaches are still fishing well in the winter sunshine, though in the early morning there are lots of small whiting taken worms but larger legal sized fish are also around so keep at it and a feed of legal sized fish should not be far away.

In the evening with the temperature dropping and the wind blowing it is hard to get motivated to go out for a fish but for those that wrap up well and put in the time a good feed can be taken with tailor, trevally and salmon and sometimes the elusive mulloway .

With large kings still being taken of our reefs and headlands it looks as if they will continue through the rest of winter and and into our spring .

Down rigging still seems to be the way to catch these magnificent fish.

With a mako competion on this weekend in Sydney with all manner of boats heading out far and wide a lot of water will be covered and hopefully there will be some results of other fish being picked up.

If fishing is not for you this weekend the boat show could be an alternative venue to check out all the new toy,s that are on offer and maybe even upgrade or buy your first boat.

As always keep safe.
