Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
There are many things in this world that money can buy: boats, cars, trips, tackle, the list could go on forever. But there has always been a few precious things that money can’t buy: love, happiness and I’m going to add one more thing to that short list... a trophy musky.
Now some of you are probably reading this with a little bit of a confused look on your face so I’ll spend the rest of this article explaining what I mean by that statement. I have been extremely fortunate to live, hunt, and fish, in some extraordinary places, and even more fortunate that I have been paid to do a lot of it. So I have seen first-hand the amount of money people are willing to dish out to all but guarantee a trophy fish, and this is what I sometimes refer to as buying your trophy.
And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. If I had the resources to put myself in the best possible position to land a trophy I would do the exact same thing. But what I have come to really love about musky fishing is that it doesn’t matter where you are, how much money you spent to get there, or how much tackle you brought, you cannot buy your musky. It doesn’t matter where in the world you are or what lake you’re on, the only thing that is going to put that trophy musky in the boat is time. Time spent on the water, in the boat, casting and casting and casting, coming in for dinner, then casting some more. Time spent frustrated by snags, broken lines, and birds nests. Time spent finding out your drag was too tight or too loose. Time spent in the baking sun, the howling wind, or sideways rain. Time spent in the boat not seeing a fish for hours or time spent in the boat seeing fish follow but not biting.
But after all that time and you finally land that musky there are no asterisks. There are no ya but’s. No one can say "ya but you were on so and so lake" or "ya I could have caught that fish if I paid to go there". That fish is purely the result of the work you were willing to put in chasing it. That is what I mean when I say you can’t buy your trophy musky. And that is what separates musky fisherman from the rest, and that is why I love musky fishing.
