The American Sportfishing Association (ASA) Saltwater Fishing Expo opens today from noon to 8 p.m. at the Garden State Exhibit Center in Somerset (Exit 10 off Interstate 287) and runs through Sunday. Saltwater anglers will be in their glory at this show, which features exhibits from most national manufacturers as well as numerous free seminars.

With prime fishing for big striped bass just a month or so ahead, I’ll be providing a seminar at 11:30 Saturday morning on Big Bunkers/Big Bass — for both boaters and surf casters. Other seminars feature skippers such as Frank Crescitelli (demonstrating cast netting) Jim Freda, Gene Quigley, Jimmy Gahm, Dave Chieffo, Pete Myers and Dave Tilley, plus Rich Johnson, Ron Jenkins and surf pro Shell Caris. Two of the country’s foremost surf casters, “Crazy” Alberto Knie and Ron Arra, will be demonstrating their casting skills — and underwater photographer Mike Laptew is set to show his spectacular videos. Captains Brett McBride and Jody Whitworth from National Geographic Channel’s “Expedition Great White” will be explaining their scientific research cruise off Mexico that produced record numbers and sizes of tagged whites.

There are also lots of manufacturers’ specials from such makers as Shimano, Daiwa, Lamiglas, Fin-Nor/Quantum, St. Croix, Van Staal, Canyon Reels, Sting-O Fish and Strike Pro. Those interested in obtaining a captain’s license even have a show special from Capt. John Luchka of Mariners Learning System who is offering the $795 USCG-approved online course and USCG test for $575.

Those with fish tattoos have a really special offer — a free plug from Guide’s Secret at Booth 332 between 3 and 4 p.m. both today and Saturday. Frank Crescitelli has 50 plugs for each day, and that tattoo will also earn a shot at the lure selection and Evolution rod awarded for best tattoo. Guide’s Secret is introducing a big 3-ounce pencil popper suitable for surf casters seeking trophy bass chasing bunkers.

Show hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday when the first 200 children will receive a Plano tackle box. Admission is $11 for adults, $3 for those 5 to 11, and no charge for children under 5. For a complete list of seminars plus additional information about the Expo, visit www.sportshows.com.

I’ll have more about the Expo in Saturday’s blog at nj.com/shore/blogs/fishing. Check that daily blog for fishing and conservation information.

S-221, the Pots off the Reefs bill, is scheduled for a Senate vote on Monday. Capt. Pete Grimbilas of Reef Rescue asks for 5 calls to state senators urging them to vote for the bill that will allow anglers and divers unobstructed use of reefs built with federal dedicated sport-fishing funds plus contributions from the recreational sector.

The Marine Fisheries Council will be making a decision on fluke regulations during its April 7 meeting in Galloway Township Library. The Fluke Advisory Panel met Tuesday, and Paul Haertel reports many felt the most popular option so far, which provides the longest season (May 2 to Sept. 30) while maintaining an 18-inch minimum and six fish limit, might put the state over quota — resulting in problems for 2012. They favored retaining the 18-inch minimum with a somewhat shorter season of May 7 to Sept. 25, plus an eight-fish bag. Limits are so uncommon at 18 inches that it hardly makes any difference if the bag remains at six or goes up a couple of fish.
