Z Fish Report (4/4/19)

The striped marlin, along with 6 sailfish on the panga Dos |Hermanos,
with AdolfoThe pier demolition appears to have been put on hold, at least until after the two week holiday celebrating Easter. Called Semana Santa in Spanish, this is when about 40,000 Mexican Nationals descend on our beaches, hotels, and restaurants, giving a whole new meaning to “insane.”

What it means to us fishermen, at least for the next couple of weeks, is the parking lot at the pier is open again, but it will be so crowded with vehicles 24 hours a day, there is no change as far as we are concerned.

Offshore (average) surface water temperature - Includes from the 5 - 6 mile mark at the 100 fathom line, then to the 1,000 fathom line being about 32 miles: Exactly the same as the last two weeks. 83°
Rudy, fishing out of Puerto Vicente Guerrero also found the marlin.
below are the teaser birds he uses  to get their attention.

Inshore (average) surface temperature. From the beach to about 5 miles: A little warmer this week with about an 82° temperature, all up and down the coast.
Blue water: (Chlorophyll amounts and surface temps from Terrafin SST) A bit better this week. Clean water is actually approaching the beaches, but a well-defined blue water is still out past the 1,000 fathom mark.

Offshore: What a difference a week makes. I am not sure if it was the water cleaning up, the temperature, or the moon phase, but probably all of them. Adolfo, on the panga Dos Hermanos, had offshore clients today (Thursday). Using spin rods, they released 6 sailfish, and 1 striped marlin. (Can you imagine the fun with spin rods, instead of heavy Penn Internationals?)
One of six sailfish caught on the panga
Dos Hermanos with Adolfo.
None of the fish were caught beyond the 8 mile mark. This is the best offshore catch, including the peak of the high season (January), I have heard of for two years. And it was done in April.

Another striped marlin coming to the boat for Rudy.
Inshore: Like last week, the inshore is still holding up very well. Even though the roosters have mostly, due to the cooler water temperatures, the jack crevalle and sierras are still providing a lot of action.
Mark Dennison, with a fishing lodge and campground down at La Barrita, emailed me about the action there. Using spin gear on the shore, in front of his place, he is getting some great fishing from the beach in front of his place: “I have been catching 8 or 10 jack crevalle every morning and evening, as well as a few needle fish. I have also seen a few roosters in the waves. One big one, I bet was about 25 kilos.”
