Deschutes River Redside Trout & Summer Steelhead Report
————————————————————————————
Deschutes Red Side Trout Report:

The Deschutes river is steadily dropping. Todays discharge from Pelton dam is now 5,700 CFS at 9:00am. Now it's getting close to a fishing level. Water temperature is 49 degrees. Colder than normal for now, but it will work up as river drops and day time temperatures rise.

Trout fishing? Yesterday showed improvement. I would recommend late morning to early evening fishing with nymphs and wet flies in slow deep runs with lots of structor. You will need to add weight to get your flies deep enough to help your odds.

You really need to stay on the bank at these water levels, the trout are right in tight.
Middle of the day is when you’ll have the best opportunity for dry fly action. The dominant hatch has been the BWO’s, size 16 or 18 found in the usual places. slow soft runs and back eddies. Make sure you check the foam lines, a lot of duns get trapped in those and fish are aware of that easy food source.

Pattern suggestions: Stone fly nymphs, 8's & 10's, Lightening Bugs, 16’s, Rainbow Warriors, 18’s & 20’s. Hares Ear Soft Hackle, 14’s & 16’s, Prince Nymphs, 10’s and 12’s, Soft Hackles, 16’s, CDC BH Pheasant tails, 14’s, & 16’s Double bead caddis, 14’s and 16’s. We will show you some other new patterns that have just arrived that we think will help change the minds of some of those stubborn red side trout.

I encourage you to click on “Monthly Hatch Chart” to see what you can expect during this month. Its also a great way to get a sneak preview of hatches in the months ahead.
