Deschutes River Redside Trout & Summer Steelhead Report
————————————————————————————
Deschutes Red Side Trout Report:

Todays discharge from Pelton dam is 4,620 CFS at 11:00am. Now the level is in a normal flow range. Water temperature is 52 degrees.

Now we will start to see Stone fly nymphs migrating out of the river onto the bank. I would recommend fishing stone nymphs close to the bank using black or brown sizes 6 to 10. It's a good idea to use some stone fly patterns that aren't too heavily weighted. Even though you’re fishing in fast water, it’s shallower close to the bank. When you use a fly that has less weight, you won’t get hung up as often making it easier to complete your total personation.

There are a few more May Flies and Caddis hatching, so make sure you use those smaller flies if the trout are not responding to the bigger Stone Fly nymphs.

The Steelhead smolt are moving through the river on their way to the Columbia. You will catch these little guys throughout the day between the trout.

Pattern suggestions: Stone Fly Nymphs, Black and Brown, 6 to 10's. Lightening Bugs, 16’s, Rainbow Warriors, 16’s & 18’s. Hares Ear Soft Hackle, 14’s & 16’s, Prince Nymphs, 10’s and 12’s, Soft Hackles, 16’s, CDC BH Pheasant tails, 14’s, & 16’s Double bead caddis, 14’s and 16’s. We will show you some other new patterns that have just arrived that we think will help change the minds of some of those stubborn red side trout.

You really need to stay on the bank, the trout are right in tight. Middle of the day is when you’ll have the best opportunity for dry fly action.

I encourage you to click on “Monthly Hatch Chart” to see what you can expect during this month. Its also a great way to get a sneak preview of hatches in the months ahead.
