Deschutes River Redside Trout & Summer Steelhead Report
————————————————————————————
Deschutes Red Side Trout Report:

Salmon Flies, Golden Stones and Little Yellow Stones are out in good numbers and trout are responding favorably! Yes, trout are looking up and taking the dries!
The majority of this wonderful activity is, of course, taking place along the shore and tree lines where the most adult stones have accumulated to preparing to fly back over the river to lay their eggs.

The other good news is the PMD’s, PED’s have been hatching for about 3 weeks and fish have been keying on those from early afternoon to early evening. Last but not least, the Green Drakes have started to hatching! If you think the trout like stone flies, wait till you see them go for the drakes when they’re hatching. Most of the time, there is no hesitation, just a very aggressive grab off the top! Sadly, the drake hatch here isn’t very abundant and only last for about two weeks. So by the middle of June, they’ll be done.

There are a few more Caddis hatching too. Make sure you use those smaller flies if the trout are not responding to the bigger Stone Flies, PED’s & Green Drakes.

There is still some Steelhead smolt moving through the river on their way to the Columbia. You will catch these little guys throughout the day between the trout.

Pattern suggestions: Norm Wood Special, 8’s & 10’s, Clark Stone 10’s, Lil Yellow Sally’s, 16’s, Para PED, 12’s, PMD’s 16’s, Para Green Drake, 10’s, Elk hair Caddis, 14’s & 16’s, Hares Ear Soft Hackle, 14’s & 16’s, Prince Nymphs, 10’s and 12’s, Sparkle Soft Hackles, 16’s, CDC BH Pheasant tails, 14’s, & 16’s Double bead caddis, 14’s and 16’s. Lightening Bugs, 16’s, Rainbow Warriors, 18’s & 20’s.

We will show you some other new patterns that have just arrived that we think will help change the minds of some of those stubborn red side trout.

River level is 4,770 CFS and the water temperature is 53 degrees.

I encourage you to click on “Monthly Hatch Chart” to see what you can expect during this month. Its also a great way to get a sneak preview of hatches in the months ahead.
