August Backcountry Fishing Report for Islamorada

 | By Seamus on 8/16/2019 10:30:48 AM | Views (918)

August is rolling by fast and we are definitely feeling like we're in the dog days of summer!  It's been very warm and we've had typical calm summer days with some scattered rain storms but nothing that's really kept us from fishing.  I will say though the fishing has been about just as hot as the weather overall!  I don't think we've seen much better fishing in the backcountry for snook and redfish.  There are just ungodly numbers of them in almost every area you go when the tide/wind is right.  They've been up in the shallow flats, around the islands, in the moats and runoffs, off the beachs... I mean everywhere!  It's not uncommon to catch 50 fish in a trip and sometimes more.  It's really great to see.  Tarpon fishing has been fair, we really didn't get that crazy good fishing like we had last summer but it was consistent to say the least.  Through July I think I had around 25 trips in a row with catching at least 1, though in the last couple weeks we did unfortunately strike out a couple times as things got a little tougher where we were down to getting just a bite or two a trip and sometimes they didn't stay on the hook.  But that's fishing for you!  For most my anglers as of late, I've been telling them if you are here to catch the silver king and don't mind devoting the day to trying to maybe get a shot or two and hopefully catch one, then let's do it.  But if you want to catch fish and bend rods, then there is still usually some really good quality options with snook, redfish, etc... and you may even get lucky and find some juvenile tarpon too while doing that.  Just yesterday however we fished hard and did catch a nice tarpon, and I did see a good amount of fish in 3 different areas.  I think once we get past the full moon which is coming up, they may really turn on again.  It's definitely not too late to catch the silver king here and it can be possible through October.  Tripletail had been around in very good number in July, and there are still a good handful of them floating around in the bays and off the shores in the everglades.  Out in the gulf you may still get some good shots at permit through August as well if you have the good calm weather.  September is just around the corner, and it'll be starting to get very slow with business here.  Which means its a great time to come down and get the Keys all to yourself!  I am even offering some discounted rates in September and October, at least until I get my book filled up enough as honestly I need a break myself too.  Rooms are discounted at Bud n Marys as well up through the end of November.  Give us a call and let's go fishing!  305-664-2461
