October Backcountry Fishing Report for Islamorada

 | By Seamus on 10/14/2019 7:51:22 PM | Views (567)

October is here and fall is in the air!  We've had a little bit early start to fall here... even though the temperatures have only dropped slightly, we've had a good bit of northeasterly winds which have started the fall bait migration.  Tons of smaller mullets, pilchards, sardines, herrings, and more are moving all up and down the coasts, with hungry packs of predators like tarpon, snook, jacks, redfish, sharks, and more after 'em!  It started early with the near impact of hurricane dorian and since then the winds been consistently that northereasterly direction and a little blustery but just right for this great fishing scenario.  Backcountry fishing has been stellar with lots of snook and redfish around and still some of the best fishing we've seen in years for them back there.  It's not uncommon to catch 50 or more fish in a day and that's the truth.  Tarpon are definitely still around too though the bite is just a little more hit and miss. As long as it stays farily warm though that's always a possibility.  Elsewhere in the bay snapper and trout fishing is really good with some jumbo mangrove snappers around that have moved back in from the offshore spawning grounds.  Tripletail are still floating around randomly and in a few more weeks should be found out in the gulf on the lobster and crab pot buoys.  Come on down and let's go fishing it's a great time before things get busy by christmas.
