Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
Rocky River was named one of the “150 Best Places to fish in America” in the June 2007 issue of Field and Stream magazine
***February 28, 2011, morning update: The river is flooded following heavy rain and snowmelt and it will be at least several days before the river may be approaching fishable conditions again. Keep an eye on the flow gage to drop to about 300-400 cfs to indicate good fishing conditions.***
***February 26, 2011, afternoon update: Most of the slush burned off the river by mid-afternoon today and offered good fishing conditions. Given the projected low temp of near freezing tonight, but not much below, the river may very well be fishable tomorrow morning.***
***February 26, 2011, morning update: The river is very slushy this morning, but ice fishing conditions at Wallace Lake are good for those looking to wet a line.***
***February 25, 2011, afternoon update: The river was slushy today following the heavy snowfall. If weekend temperatures get above freezing, the sun peeks out, and additional snowfall isn't too heavy the slush should start to melt and improve fishing conditions. Afternoon will be a better bet than morning tomorrow, as temps are forecasted to go down to about 20*F overnight.***
Fishing conditions on the Rocky River are currently very good, with the river continuing to drop in level and clear. Conditions in the coming days will be dependant upon how much rain we get in the next 24 hours; if it’s minimal the river should continue to offer excellent conditions, but if it’s heavy rain it could cause the river to muddy again. Wise anglers will keep abreast of the latest trend in river flow prior to making a trip, which can be done at the following link:
Steelhead anglers have finally caught a break this week! The river has been fishable the past two days, with conditions continuing to improve and a fresh run of steelhead making an appearance. On Wednesday afternoon, anglers were catching most of the fish a few miles upstream of the lake, while this morning a run of fish also made a showing around the marina area on the lower river. Overall, most of the bigger fish are coming from further upstream, while the marina area is offering a mix of adult and skipper steelhead. The hot bait the past two days in the stained water has been a hot pink spawn sack about the size of a nickel. As the water continues to clear other offerings, such as jig and maggots drifted under a float and egg pattern flies, should start picking up their share of fish. If the impending rain ends up being minimal to modest in quantity, fishing conditions should continue to improve and offer promising fishing prospects in the coming days. If the rain is heavier, it may muddy the river again for a day or two. Keep posted to the flow gage for the latest trend in river flow.
Anglers were doing very well ice fishing for stocked trout at Wallace Lake yesterday afternoon. The "hot spot" this week has been the lake around the swimming area. Fish were biting fairly aggressively and were being caught on a number of offerings, but rainbow and orange colored Power Bait were working particularly well. I observed “Captain Rick”, a regular on the lake, lose a 20” class trout at the hole while fishing a jigging spoon yesterday afternoon, and it seems like the larger trout have been a bit more inclined to hit a jigging spoon lately. Ledge Lake has also been producing some good trout fishing lately. Ice is currently solid a few feet out from shore, with the thinnest ice right at the shoreline (as a result of reforming following last week’s thaw). NOTE: Keep in mind that ice conditions will continue to change depending on temperature and precipitation over the next few days so monitor ice thickness near shore to make sure there is a minimum of 4” of solid ice before venturing out further. If ice degrades signficantly following the rain, anglers can still fish for these trout from the safety of fishing platforms, the lifeguard pier, and off sandstone drop-offs along the shoreline.
Shadow Lake is clearly posted as closed to fishing at this time. You can check the report for updates on this situation into spring. Spring trout stocking on the East Branch Rocky River is planned to begin approximately mid-March.
