You bewdy! Craig Mather scored this red emperor while fishing the depths off Carnarvon last month.
Broome catches
Broome guru Ayesha Salkilld released this cobia after a tough battle and quick photo. Great work!

Boats

Sailfish have continued to be encountered off Barred Creek, near The Peanut and farther north towards the Dampier Peninsula. Spanish mackerel have been responding to bibbed minnows and rigged garfish trolled in many areas and there are lots of longtail and mack tuna around. Reef fishers have been doing reasonably well on red emperor, saddletail seaperch and blue lined emperor in 30m to 50m of water. Bluebone and fingermark bream can be targeted within Roebuck Bay. There are sill tripletail being found near the moorings and flotsam. Jason Perella, of Perth, and Australind's Ashley Galati were in Broome last week and were keen to head out in search of northern reef species. The duo achieved their goal and caught a couple of nice red emperor. Also, Recfishwest is urging fishers to get their voices heard and get their submissions in to the proposed Buccaneer Archipelago marine parks public comment process before the June 11 deadline.

Shore-based

Sportfishers have been using a variety of lures to catch bluenose and threadfin salmon along Cable Beach and Roebuck Bay. Barramundi are also occasionally being caught within Roebuck Bay, as well as within the local creeks and Fitzroy River. Queenfish and golden trevally are a chance at the jetty, especially during the lead up to the change in tide.
Exmouth catches
On Strike Charters have been putting clients on to terrific fish off Exmouth, including this wahoo.

Boats

Billfish enthusiasts are still landing sailfish and small black marlin beyond the 100m line. Wahoo are also being found out wide together with dolphinfish and yellowfin tuna. Spanish mackerel can be caught along the back of the reef line and near the Muiron Islands. Reef fishers have been picking up red emperor in 40m to 60m near the Muirons, while goldband jobfish have been caught in about 70m. Squid can be targeted near the seagrass areas within Exmouth Gulf.

Jack attack! Russell Dawson tangled with a few mangrove jacks near Exmouth last week.

Shore-based

Prawns are in the lower areas of Exmouth Gulf in big numbers and their presence has resulted in some very good catches of yellowfin whiting to an impressive 45cm at spots including Bay of Rest and Learmonth Jetty. Squid continue to be caught at the marina and Bundegi Jetty, especially during an incoming tide. Schools of hardyheads near Learmonth and Bundegi have been attracting queenfish, giant herring and varieties of trevally to the areas. Spangled emperor and golden trevally can be targeted at the west coast accesses.

Scott’s Species – dhufish, a WA fishing icon

Who else likes catching dhufish, like Great Southern fisher Matt Pullela?

The mighty dhufish. They’re WA’s most iconic fish for a myriad of reasons, writes Western Angler editor Scott Coghlan in this week’s exclusive edition of Scott’s Spots. Ask any offshore angler in the southern half of the State what they most want to catch and almost all will say: “a big dhufish”. Read the latest Scott's Species discussing dhufish here.

Kalbarri catches

Boats

The Spanish mackerel action has increased offshore, with dozens of fish caught in the 10kg to 12kg range in addition to the odd fish of 25kg. Most Spaniards have been caught near Jakes Bay, not far from Red Bluff and out from Bush Hill and Sand Patch. The occasional wahoo has been picked up among the mackerel alongside mack, longtail and yellowfin tuna. Reef fishers have been doing well on dhufish and big pink snapper in close. Red emperor and Rankin cod were among the species caught out wide.

Shore-based

Tailor have been appearing in very good numbers and sizes at Wittecarra Creek and Red Bluff. Dart and herring have been caught among the tailor, while there have been a few mulloway around. More mulloway have been landed in lower reaches of the Murchison River. Garfish numbers are building at Red Bluff and Jakes. Black bream and estuary cod can be targeted near the jetties and pens.
Geraldton catches

Boats

Dhufish, baldchin groper and pink snapper have been caught near African Reef and South West Bank this week. More of the same species have been coming from the lumps off Coronation and Horrocks. Pink snapper are sometimes being caught in good numbers in close, especially late afternoon and evening. Spanish mackerel have been encountered behind African Reef and Pensioners Bank. Dinghy and kayak fishers have continued to find squid, skippy and pike inshore.

Shore-based

Seaweed deposited along the coast has made fishing difficult at many of the beaches. Surf fishers who either persevered with, or found areas clean of, the seaweed managed to pick up some tailor and mulloway. These spots included Flat Rocks, Tarcoola, Southgates, Drummond's Cove and Horrocks. The first and second points at Greenough have been fishing well for herring, whiting, pike and the odd mackerel. More whiting have been caught at St Georges, Pages and the beaches north of Drummond's. Squid can be caught under the lights at the marina at night.
Lancelin catches
Mulloway king Graeme Doodson with ANOTHER silver ghost from the sand near Lancelin! The mulloway, which was a bycatch when fishing for pink snapper, was released to fight another day.

Boats

Last weekend's weather kept many boats on land. However, those who were lucky enough to get out midweek when the weather improved found gummy sharks and dhufish in the 28m to 35m depths. Inside the bay, there are good numbers of herring skippy and squid.

Shore-based

There have been plenty of herring around the jetty at night, with fishers bait casting pilchards off the north end enjoying the most success. Drop-netters have caught blue swimmer crabs from the structure this week too. The beaches have eroded from the stormy weather. Some sections are very steep and soft along the water's edge, so caution is required when driving along the beach. Chopper tailor numbers have been low, however, larger green backs have been caught from reef breaks and gutters. It is very easy to gather a feed of sand whiting, with plenty of reasonable sized fish in good numbers along the beaches

Beau bags a beaut boat in Salmon Slam surprise prize win delight

Mt Barker's Beau Gee won the 2021 Salmon Slam and is now the proud owner of the boat, dinghy and trailer top-prize, valued at $9,000, for simply catching and entering a salmon into the app-based comp.

“I can’t believe that I’m a boat owner now, I really can’t – just by catching a salmon – it is great news.” That was Beau Gee’s response after winning the 2021 Salmon Slam’s $9,000 dinghy, trailer and outboard package top-prize for simply catching a salmon and entering it into the app-based competition. The three-month Slam came to an end at midnight on Monday, with 1,659 fishers taking part and chasing salmon along South West and south coast beaches during the autumn salmon migration. Father-of-three Beau was the random draw-winner to scoop the 3.5m Seejay aluminium dinghy, powered by a six horse-power, four-stroke Honda outboard and trailer, supplied by Rusty’s Marine in Albany. Held in partnership between Recfishwest and Western Angler magazine, the Salmon Slam – part of the Awesome Autumn of Salmon – celebrates salmon as a fantastic, safe and accessible sportfish. Read the full story and see who else won the other prizes here.

Esperance catches

Boats

King George whiting, herring, sand whiting, skippy and squid have been caught by small boat fishers within the bay. Packs of yellowtail kingfish – 8kg to 10kg fish – have been found near the islands. When found, they've been attacking stickbaits with ferocity and providing fun-filled sessions for those who are lucky enough to come across the hoodlums. Nannygai to 55cm, breaksea cod, queen snapper and harlequin fish were among the species recently caught out wide.

Shore-based

The new Esperance Jetty has herring, squid, garfish and bonito on offer. King George whiting to 35cm can be targeted at Bandy Creek Boat Harbour. Salmon were found at Salmon Beach, Fourth Beach, Eleven Mile, Roses, Alexander Bay, Thomas River, Duke of Orleans and Poison Creek during the week. Flathead to 50cm, fat skippy and herring have been common at Fourth Beach.
Great Southern catches
Jim Bastow, of Primal Instinct Fishing, finished university and wasted no time to head to the Great Southern to head out to wet a line. "I couldn't be happier with my first land-based dhufish," Jim said.

Boats

Reef fishers have generally been doing better on snapper, breaksea cod and dhufish in waters east and west of Albany rather than south of the marina. Deep water enthusiasts have been finding red snapper at the edge of the shelf, while blue eye trevalla, grey-banded cod and hapuka have been picked up out deeper. Schools of bonito have been turning up offshore, as well as inshore. King George whiting continue to be caught in very good numbers within King George Sound. Squid catches are improving inshore and there are still lots of herring, juvenile salmon and skippy within both harbours, as well as the sound.

Shore-based

Salmon are continuing to be caught in good numbers along the beaches to the east and west of Albany. Lowlands, Shelley Beach, Cables, Sand Patch, Nanarup and Cheynes Beach were among the spots where the 3kg to 7kg salmon were caught this week. Herring remain in very good numbers right along the coast, while tarwhine are thick in areas between Shelley Beach and Ocean Beach. Rock fishers have been doing well on bonito at Little Beach, while pink snapper, Samson fish and queen snapper have been landed from the stones at Mutton Bird. Read more about safe land-based fishing here. Small black bream have dominated catches in the King and Kalgan rivers. Bigger bream seem to be getting caught more consistently in the systems west of Albany.
South West catches
Jake Atkinson decided to head out to the 50m depths off Bunbury with his brother Lachlan and earlier this week and the duo were not disappointed. Jake caught a couple of great fish, including this baldie.

Boats

Boat fishers can quickly access the west-side of Cape Naturaliste again, with Canal Rocks’ revamped $1.6 million boat ramp and jetty set to officially open for vessels to launch. Reef fishers off Cape Naturaliste have been doing well on dhufish, snapper and breaksea cod off the west coast when conditions have permitted. Dhufish are being caught in increasing numbers within Geographe Bay off Busselton and Bunbury this week. Pink snapper are also being picked up on anchor in depths leading up to 20m early morning and at night, with Bunbury fisher Brad Gaylard enjoying a good session catching the sought-after species earlier this week. King George whiting catches are improving and there seems to be more squid around.

Simon Green was more than pleased with this dhuie while jigging off Bunbury this week.

Shore-based

Pink snapper were caught along beaches between Busselton and Bunbury when the rough weather was present last Friday night and last weekend. Mulloway were also caught by those soaking baits near Busselton and from the Busselton Jetty at night this week. Tailor have been appearing some mornings and evenings at Elmore Road, Bunker Bay, Yallingup, Smiths Beach, Mitchells and Moses Rock. Bunker Bay seems to be the best spot to try for salmon, while the 3kg to 6kg fish are also a chance at Smiths, Injidup and Hamelin Bay. Herring remain in very good numbers along both sides of Cape Naturaliste. The beaches north of Bunbury — Belvedere, Buffalo and Binningup — have had many bread-and-butter species on offer this week.

Freshwater

Mandurah

Pink snapper, the occasional dhufish, mulloway and Samson fish have been caught by boat fishers off Mandurah this week. Pink snapper fishing after last weekend's storm has also been productive along beaches near Mandurah this week. Lachie Ramm, pictured in the 'Pic of the Week' section at the top of the report, was among land-based fishers to catch a pinkie from the sand. Salmon are still being caught from beaches near Mandurah, alongside tailor. Anglers fishing from the ocean end of the Dawesville Cut have been catching a few King George whiting, lots of herring and the odd skippy. Some salmon are still being taken from the Cut and the adjacent waters of the estuary. The Murray and Serpentine rivers have been producing some excellent catches of bream from most popular spots.

Secret Harbour / Warnbro / Port Kennedy / Rockingham / Safety Bay

This 51cm King George whiting hit the deck on Clay Lewis' boat off Rockingham on Wednesday morning.

Tailor have been caught across the region, namely close to reefs. Poppers or bait casting mulies will do the trick. Jetty anglers are catching good bags of herring and whiting in the mornings. Penguin Island sandbar has been producing some excellent fishing,  with good catches of flathead and whiting. Long Point, Point Perron and the Rockingham jetties have been producing consistent catches of yellowfin whiting, big herring, chopper tailor, skippy and tarwhine. For those heading out wide in the vessel, pink snapper and King George whiting have been on offer as shown by Clay Lewis, pictured above.
Perth catches
Tom Corrie braved cold conditions on Tuesday morning to be rewarded with a couple of pink snapper.

Boats

Yellowfin tuna are sometimes being encountered out wide of Rottnest Island. Reef fishing has been productive in 20m to 50m of water south-west of Rottnest Island where pink snapper, dhufish, breaksea cod and baldchin groper have been found around the broken bottom and lumps. More baldchin groper have been caught in depths of about 40m off Hillarys and Mindarie, while many have been finding pink snapper inshore at both areas. King George whiting can be targeted near The Windmills and the 12m to 20m depths off Cottesloe and City Beach. Squid catches have been improving off Fremantle and within Cockburn Sound and Warnbro Sound.

A session using metal jigs paid off for Frank Zanatta, aka the Salty Dawg Rhino, off Two rocks yesterday.

Shore-based

Dozens of pink snapper brought to shore by strong north-westerly winds were caught from the northern and southern rock walls this week. The deep gutters recently formed along the metropolitan beaches, and coastal areas to the north and south, may also be worth trying to pink snapper and other species including mulloway that turn up close to shore following a period of rough weather. Tailor have been appearing some mornings and evenings along the beaches. Herring are still present along the coast in very good numbers, especially the rock walls, jetties and groynes. Squid catches have been improving from the rocks at Fremantle. Mulloway are a chance at Fremantle Harbour, Mosman Bay and Narrows Bridge. Black bream enthusiasts have been using soft plastic and hardbody lures to catch fish to 40cm between the Causeway and Chidley Point.
