Pic of the Week!

Trudy Morehouse, aka the Squid Queen, decided to put the squid jigs away today for a snapper session off Busselton. The decision proved worthwhile after she caught this BEAST pinkie cracking the metre mark. Awesome work, Trudy, a worthy Pic of the Week!

Shhhhh, secret spot!
Tom Miller (top photo) went out with the old boy, Dusty Miller (bottom photo), to bring up some solid pinkies."We dropped another at the side of the boat that would have been 950mm long too. Great four-hour session with the old boy" Great work, guys!

Donning a Crewsaver lifejacket, Simon Busby was buzzing after catching this solid Spanish mackerel during a five-day North West land-based game fishing safari with Robbie Riches, of Perth Fishing Safaris.

Broome catches
Makaira Game Fishing based in Broome, managed to get out last weekend and put their clients on some great fish such as this coral trout, and many other quality species.

Boats

Billfish enthusiasts have been using trolled baits and switch-baiting methods to land sailfish in waters northwest of Barred Creek. Spanish mackerel between 1m and 1.3m in length have also been encountered out wide together with mack and longtail tuna. Reef fishers have been doing reasonably well on blue lined emperor, saddletail seaperch and red emperor between the 30m and 40m depths while bluebone, fingermark bream and coral trout have sometimes been picked up in close. Threadfin and bluenose salmon are providing some entertaining sessions for sport fishers within Roebuck Bay.

Shore-based

Baitfish have been appearing in close along Cable Beach and Roebuck Bay and their presence has been attracting a host of predators including bluenose salmon, threadfin salmon, queenfish and golden trevally. More queenfish and trevally can be targeted at Entrance Point where bluebone and barramundi are sometimes being caught. Mangrove jack and estuary cod are a chance from the local creek banks. Barramundi activity has been increasing in the Fitzroy River as well as at some of the creeks.
Exmouth catches
Mack Attack! The guys at On Strike Charters providing the world class fishing experiences in Exmouth. Rate it!

Boats

Spanish mackerel are being caught at King Reef and Cooper Shoals as well as along the back of the west coast reef. Reef fishers have been finding red emperor, Rankin cod and spangled emperor in the relatively shallower waters of 30m to 50m following a decrease in water temperatures. More spangled emperor have been caught on poppers and stickbaits within the lagoon. Dinghy and small boat fishers have been picking up very good catches of squid by drifting along the seagrass beds between the marina and Learmonth.

Shore-based

Tackle World Exmouth’s Josh Cheong caught and released an estimated 18kg cobia, which he spotted swimming alongside a passing manta ray, on a mulie and gang hook at Bundegi boat ramp last Monday. Squid have been caught at nearby Bundegi Jetty in good numbers as well as at the marina, Squid Rock and Learmonth Jetty. Queenfish have been appearing within casting distance along the Exmouth Gulf beaches as well as at some of the west coast accesses. Spangled emperor have been caught on baits and lures between Tantabiddi and the lighthouse. Bluebone are a chance at Mildura Wreck and other accesses that feature reef.

Scott's Species - giant trevally (GT), the biggest and most fearsome of the trevally clan

An amazing capture of a big GT on a tiny popper and light tackle for Mike Roennfeldt at West Moore Island.

The biggest and most fearsome of the trevally clan, giant trevally have become a premier sportfish across the fishing world and WA is fortunate to offer some exceptional fishing for them. Read the full story in this week's Scott's Species here.

Recfishwest's own Partnerships and Business Development Manager, Tim Grose, caught this GT during a trip to Exmouth.

Kalbarri catches
You know it was a good day when you catch a 76cm trout. Glen Chandler did just that, heading out around Dorre Island while fishing in the Carnar-fin Comp.

Boats

Reef fishers have been picking up fair catches of dhufish, red emperor, Rankin cod and spangled emperor in 30m to 50m of water northwest of the river mouth. Pink snapper and coral trout have been caught near Sand Patch and Bush Hill. Metal and soft plastic jigs worked near the cliffs south of town extending to Wagoe have been producing mixed catches of baldchin groper, pink snapper and coral trout. Spanish mackerel and yellowfin tuna were among the pelagic species caught on trolled minnows and rigged whole baits.

Shore-based

Spanish mackerel in the 10kg to 15kg range are occasionally being caught on air and gas balloon rigs at Red Bluff and Jakes Bay. Tailor have been caught early morning and evening at both beaches as well as at Wittecarra Creek, the back beach and Chinamans. Mulloway continued to be caught at the lower reaches of the Murchison River. The jetties and pens are worth a try for black bream, estuary cod and mulloway.

Geraldton catches
Mat Svenson went up for a cruise up the beach and ended up finding some good ground which turned out to be full of school mullys. After some persistence, he ended up with this silver slab.

Boats

Reef fishing has generally been productive near African Reef and South West Bank where dhufish to 12kg, baldchin groper of mixed sizes and lots of pink snapper have been caught. More snapper have been picked up along the lumps off Horrocks and Coronation. Dinghy and kayak fishers have been finding squid, herring and snook around the seagrass inshore. Spanish mackerel are a chance along the back of Pensioners Bank and near the Abrolhos Islands.

Shore-based

Tailor have been appearing some mornings and evenings along the Flat Rocks to Greenough River mouth stretch. The first and second points at Greenough are producing herring, skippy, whiting and snook in addition to the tailor. Mulloway in the 11kg to 15kg range have been landed at Southgates together with tailor and school sharks. Yellowfin and school whiting can be picked up near the beaches close to town provided they are clear of seaweed. Squid have been caught at the marina in the evening near the lights.
Lancelin catches
Jayson Spencer with a tremendous dhufish off Cervantes last week! If you're fishing this upcoming weekend, make sure to tag us on Facebook or Instagram!

Boats

Demersal fishers have been finding fish throughout the depths. Dhufish in excess of 15kg have been caught at direction bank. Baldchin have been caught drifting flats out from 30m and there has been good size and numbers of break sea cod 30m through to the inshore reefs less than 10m deep. Inside the white bank has fished very well for pink snapper. Squid fishers have been cleaning up with plenty around and some weighing over a kg with hoods well over 40cm. Mackerel have been frustrating fishers with plenty of fish inside the white bank proving difficult to temp to take a bait or lure. The bays waters are crystal clear, where kayak fishers did well during the week catching squid and a multitude of fish species.

Shore-based

The beaches have been heavily affected by recent storms, eroded and weeded, fishing periods while swells are down minimizes the impact of weed on lines. Tailor have largely been limited to a short bite at sunset and rise. Small whaler sharks and mulloway have been caught at places like Fence, Virgin and Tailor reefs and Dide bay where there has been some shelter from the swells. Most the mulloway have been caught later into the evenings. Sand whiting have been in better numbers at the jetty along with the usual herring and squid.

Esperance catches

Boats

Dinghy and small boat fishers have been regularly picking up their limits of squid within the bay where herring, snook and small barracouta seem to be about in big numbers. Queen snapper and harlequin fish were among the species caught near the islands. Those who travelled wide scored nannygai to 50cm, breaksea cod, bigger queen snapper and harlequin fish. Schools of yellowtail kingfish and samson fish were located in many areas.

Shore-based

The Tanker Jetty has herring, garfish, barracouta and squid on offer. The Taylor Street Jetty has been producing similar catches along with King George whiting and small samson fish. Bigger King George have been coming from Bandy Creek boat harbour where flathead and lots of garfish have been caught. Salmon have been caught on bait and lure at Salmon Beach, Fourth Beach, Ten Mile Lagoon, Munglinup and Poison Creek. Fourteen Mile Beach has been producing some nice mulloway. Gummy sharks have been regularly landed at Alexander Bay and Thomas River. Tailor to an impressive 80cm have been caught at Roses and Poison Creek.
Great Southern catches
Recfishwest safety ambassador, Gideon Mettam, managed to get out and catch himself a great fish! Check out his post here!

Boats

King George whiting continue to be caught in good numbers inshore, especially in the relatively deeper waters near Michaelmas and Breaksea islands. Herring are plentiful inshore and there are reasonable numbers of skippy and sand whiting also around. Reef fishers generally had to work hard for their catches of snapper, dhufish and breaksea cod in waters south of town. The ground to the east and west of town has again fished better for most of the commonly targeted reef species. Yellowtail kingfish and samson fish have been found close to shore in some areas including West Cape Howe.

Shore-based

There are still salmon being caught at many beaches along the coast including Salmon Holes, Cables and Sand Patch. Herring are about in very good numbers and there are skippy in the deeper channels and reef holes. Rock fishers are occasionally catching pink snapper, dhufish, blue groper and yellowtail kingfish from the stones near West Cape Howe and Bremer Bay. Small black bream continue to dominate catches in the King and Kalgan rivers. The systems to the west of town seem to be producing catches of bigger black bream. Mulloway are about in the local rivers, but as is often the case, landing one of the enigmatic creatures requires time and effort.
South West catches
Fishing out of Bunbury, Jake Atkinson went out for a snapper fish and managed to snag a couple! Anchoring and burleying at the artificial reef. If you want to find out more about the artificial reefs in Western Australia, check out our website here for all the information you need to get out to one of them!

Boats

Reef fishers have been doing reasonably well on dhufish, queen snapper, breaksea cod and pink snapper in 30m to 50m off the west coast. More pink snapper have been picked up within Geographe Bay, especially on anchor early morning and evening along Four Mile Reef and Eight Mile Reef.

Peter from PJfishingwa landed this personal best snapper going 95cm and released it. Looks like it been a great week for pinkies around the South West! Great work, Peter!

Alongside Jake, Samantha also was able to land a few snapper of her own. Looks like it was a successful day out on the boat!

King George whiting catches are improving inshore and there seems to be a lot more squid being caught along the seagrass beds. Schools of bonito have been encountered off Eagle Bay and Bunker Bay.

Shore-based

Surf fishers have been landing pink snapper and mulloway along the beaches between Quindalup and Abbey Beach boat ramp during the storms. One of the mulloway recently caught and released measured 1.3m. There are still a few salmon and the odd tailor being caught at spots including Moses Rock, Mitchells and Smiths Beach. Burley introduced at any of headlands should assist in catching herring and skippy.

Freshwater

Troutfest is part of a carefully managed South West stocking program using freshwater fishing licence revenue to enhance the fishery and improve freshwater fishing experiences. To find out more check out the video to see last years event!
Mandurah and surrounding areas
Weighing in at 12.39kg, this dhufish put up a fight before being captured by Steve from 'On the Bite Fishing' (Instagram) out of Dawesville.

Mandurah

Access to some of the southern beaches is somewhat restricted due to recent weather moving a lot of sand. Beaches around Mandurah are still producing tailor, herring and pilch as well as an occasional gummy shark. The estuary opening and areas adjacent have also been producing good yellow-fin whiting. There are still a few black bream on the move in the Murray and Serpentine Rivers.

'On the Bite Fishing' (YouTube) own Hayden, managed to score himself a dhufish as well. smashing work, mate!

The Dawesville Cut is producing some good catches at the moment. There are plenty of King George whiting and some big herring. The areas adjacent to the bridge are also producing some good fish along with an occasional tailor of reasonable size. There are still a few salmon in the estuary and the Cut and anglers are finding them along the beaches in the area. With the recent rough weather, it may break the schools up a bit and they will scatter widely.

Secret Harbour / Warnbro / Port Kennedy / Rockingham / Safety Bay

Anglers fishing these beaches have been catching a few tailor. There have been a few King George whiting and some good tarwhine caught also. Palm Beach and Rockingham jetties have been consistently producing plenty of herring and pilch. Squid are still around in good numbers. Salmon are also being taken from the beaches fairly regularly, with those on the north side of Point Peron really producing during last week.
Perth catches
Saddle up! This beast took Chris Webster from All Salty Adventures for a run on pe2 in shallow water. The Samson fish put up an incredible fight and has been something Chris wanted to achieve for a long time! An excellent capture and a memory to never forget!

Boats

The 20m to 50m depths between Penguin Island and West End have been producing very good catches of pink snapper ranging from 3kg to 10kg. Skippy, breaksea cod and yellowtail kingfish are sometimes being caught alongside the snapper. Dhufish seem to be out a little deeper, especially off the northern side of Rottnest Island and out from Mindarie and Two Rocks where there also seems to be more baldchin groper around. Good catches of King George whiting ranging from 35cm to 45cm have been picked up in depths leading up to 20m off Cottesloe and City Beach as well as near Rottnest Island. Sand whiting can be found in many of the sand holes between the reefs off Fremantle. There are still a few mulloway being caught within Cockburn Sound in the evening. Squid catches are improving along the seagrass meadows off Fremantle.

Shore-based

Herring are a reliable target at the metropolitan rock walls and jetties, especially when burley is introduced. King George whiting are sometimes being caught from the rocks along Capo D’Orlando Drive. Squid have been caught at many of the jetties, which are illuminated, in the evening. North and South Mole have also been producing squid when the seas have been relatively calm. Many of the tailor caught from the beaches during the past fortnight have been plumper winter fish.

Speaking of plumper winter fish. Check out this super-sized NOR tailor caught by Anthony Axcell on a Nomad Riptide. A personal best for him measuring at 83cm. Sensational!

The Cottesloe to Swanbourne Drain stretch has been producing tailor some mornings and evenings. South Beach, Sand Remo and Golden Bay were among the spots where tailor were caught south of Perth while Pipidinny and Yanchep Lagoon have provided fish in the north. Black bream enthusiasts have been using soft plastic and hardbody lures to catch fish to 40cm between Narrows Bridge and Royal Perth Yacht Club. There are still good catches of blue swimmer crabs being picked up in the deeper areas of Freshwater Bay and Mosman Bay.
