Catch of the Week!

BOOM!! After the recent storm which hit Exmouth, Jess Oudt went chasing big giant trevally from the shore and achieved her goal by landing this beauty. Great land-based GT, Jess, a fish to remember.

Broome catches
A blue lined emperor was exactly what Broome angler Wade Clark was chasing last Sunday! 😎🐟😎

Boats

Sailfish have continued to be encountered in waters off Barred Creek and north along the Dampier Peninsula. Sailfish have been caught in similar areas as well as in waters off Entrance Point and Gantheaume Point. Reef fishing has been productive in 30m to 40m of water where red emperor, saddletail seaperch, blue lined emperor and coral trout have been caught in good numbers. Fingermark bream and bluebone were among the species recently picked up within Roebuck Bay.

Last Sunday, this cobia ALMOST put a smile on Jade Relph's face when he was fishing off Broome.

Shore-based

Barramundi activity has increased in Broome's creeks and the Fitzroy River, where fish in the 60cm to 80cm range have been caught. More barra are occasionally being caught at Entrance Point and along Cable Beach. Threadfin and bluenose salmon can also be targeted along Cable Beach and near the entrances of the local creeks. Gantheaume Point is worth tying for queenfish, varieties of trevally, mackerel and bluebone.
Exmouth catches
Fishing the shallows off Exmouth to avoid windy conditions, Hannah Roach scored her first spangled emperor - and a few more - while casting small Nomad Madscads. This smaller model was released.

Boats

Billfish enthusiasts have been getting among lots of small black marlin, as well as the odd sailfish in depths leading up to 200m off Tantabiddi. There is still the odd bigger blue marlin and striped marlin being landed out wide, where wahoo and dolphin fish have also been caught. Reef fishers have been picking up red emperor, pearl perch and Rankin cod in depths of 40m to 60m, while goldband jobfish have mostly been found in 90m and deeper. Spanish mackerel can be targeted on bibbed minnows and rigged garfish trolled along the back of the west coast reef line and near the shoals situated within Exmouth Gulf.

On Monday morning, Evolution Charter's Baylee Webb caught his PB coral trout off Exmouth!

Shore-based

Sportfishers have been using soft plastic and hardbody lures to catch queenfish, golden trevally and spangled emperor at the west coast accesses. Spangled emperor are sometimes being caught on bait early morning and at night near the lighthouse, while bluebone are chance on baits near Mildura Wreck. Queenfish have been appearing during an incoming tide at Bundegi Beach. There are still lots of whiting along the town and gulf beaches. Squid can be targeted at the marina and Learmonth Jetty.

Scott's Species - Scott’s Species – sooty grunter, a small yet tough foe

This sooty grunter smashed Western Angler editor Scott Coghlan's lure hard at Lake Kununurra.

While Scott Coghlan has not spent much time fishing for sooty grunter, they’re a hard-fighting fish which definitely has him hooked! In this week’s edition of Scott’s Species, published exclusively on the Recfishwest website, the Western Angler editor discusses the brute species. Want to know more? Kalbarri catches

Boats

Spanish mackerel have been caught on rigged garfish and bibbed minnows trolled in 15m to 30m of water, especially in waters north of the river mouth. Yellowfin and longtail tuna have sometimes been caught on similar methods together with smaller striped and mack tuna. Pink snapper are being caught on baits and jigs not too far out from the river mouth, at times. More snapper have been caught near the cliffs south of town, as well as in the 30m to 50m depths north-west of the river mouth where red emperor, dhufish and Rankin cod have also been caught. Dinghy fishers who have been putting in their effort targeting mulloway in the lower reaches of the Murchison River have been landing fish in the 1m to 1.3m range.

Shore-based

Surf fishers targeting tailor near the mullet schools at Lucky Bay have been landing fish up to 80cm. Smaller tailor have been appearing morning and evening at Wittecarra Creek and Red Bluff, where dart, herring and skippy have been common. Mulloway were caught at several spots including Chinaman's, Wittecarra and Red Bluff. Black bream in the 35cm to 40cm range have been caught in the upper reaches of the Murchison River, alongside estuary cod.
Geraldton catches

Boats

Pink snapper in the 50cm to 70cm range have been caught in less than 12m of water not too far from the shipping channel. South West Bank has been fishing well for dhufish and baldchin groper. Smaller baldies have been common in depths leading up to 15m off St Georges. Deep-diving lures have been working well on Spanish mackerel off Port Gregory and Horrocks. Yellowfin tuna were recently encountered near South West Bank, Cleos and Southern Group.

Shore-based

A sensational run of mulloway along the Southgates to Tarcoola stretch this week has kept fishers entertained, with 1m to 1.4m mulloway landed in the evenings. More mulloway were caught at the Greenough River mouth together with tailor in the 50cm to 60cm range. Yellowfin and school whiting can be picked up in waters clear of seaweed between Pages and Point Moore. Skippy in the 30cm to 40cm range can be caught along the reefs at Point Moore. Mostly small squid have been caught at the marina in recent weeks.
Lancelin catches
Recfishwest's James Florisson had his sights set on a Spanish mackerel during a recent session off Green Head and he was able to deliver the goods. But, he is yet to share a feed with his colleagues!

Boats

Dhufish in excess of 15kg have been caught at Direction Bank this week. Pink snapper have been widespread throughout the depths from the beach out and a better average size than we have seen in some years. Baldchin groper and breaksea cod have been regularly caught drifting in 27m to 35m of water. Tuna varieties have been caught while trolling lures. Whiting grounds in the 20m to 22m depths have been a reliable way to gather a quick feed. Bay fishers have been getting a great variety of fish with snook, skippy, herring, tarwhine and King George whiting are all on offer. Squid have stepped up in numbers.

Shore-based

Beach anglers putting in the hours have been rewarded with big pink snapper and mulloway. Areas near reef have been producing some solid tarwhine. Lancelin's jetty has fished well for squid, sand whiting and herring. The Lancelin Defence Training Area's firing range is active again this weekend, with beach access restricted from 6am to 8pm today, 25 June, and tomorrow, 26 June.

Esperance catches

Boats

Dinghy and small boat fishers have been getting among herring, skippy, garfish and squid within a couple of miles of the coast. Nannygai have been found near the islands along with queen snapper, breaksea cod and harlequin fish. Bigger nannygai were caught out wide where Samson fish to 30kg, yellowtail kingfish in the 6kg to 8kg range and sea sweep were also picked up.

Shore-based

The Esperance and Taylor Street jetties have herring, garfish, snook, barracouta, skippy and squid on offer. King George whiting, herring, garfish and black bream can be targeted at Bandy Creek Boat Harbour. Salmon have been regularly appearing at many of the local beaches, including Salmon Beach, Fourth Beach and Roses, as well as also turning up at most of the bays and coastal stretches east of town. Mulloway were landed at Fourteen Mile and Rossiter Bay, while tailor and bronze whaler sharks have been coming from Poison Creek.
Great Southern catches
Nathan Woods' squid session off Manypeaks wasn't quite going to plan so he decided to target demersals instead and this awesome dhufish was the result! Cracking south coast dhuie, Woodsy. 👌

Boats

Pink snapper seem to be getting caught in big numbers in relatively shallow water near Albany. Walpole has been producing good catches of dhufish for the past few weeks. King George whiting look as if they have moved into the deeper inshore areas near Michaelmas Island, Ledge Beach and Goode Beach. Sand whiting can also be targeted through the inshore parts, while squid require some time and effort. A troll near the headlands off Albany will likely produce herring as well as the odd salmon and bonito.

Shore-based

Salmon catches have slowed right down for the surf fishers, with very few fish coming from spots including Sand Patch and Bornholm this week. Tarwhine remain in very big numbers along most of the coast between Sand Patch and Denmark. Bluff Creek has lots of herring and skippy as well as the odd salmon on offer. Rock fishers have been working hard for their catches of Samson fish, yellowtail kingfish and blue groper from the stones. The King and Kalgan rivers are producing lots of small black bream and not too many mulloway.
South West catches
Brendan Stemp, of Lean Back Fishing, proving you don't have to venture too far off Bunbury during the winter months to catch a nice fish! Stempy caught this solid pinkie in less than 8m of water. ✔ 👌

Boats

Boat fishers off Bunbury haven't had to travel too far for pink snapper and fat skippy this past week, as shown by Brendan Stemp above. Reef fishing off the west coast of Cape Naturaliste has been productive on pink snapper, dhufish and breaksea cod when conditions have been suitable. More snapper have been caught within Geographe Bay off Busselton, where King George whiting and squid have also been picked up.

Shore-based

Surf fishers have been landing pink snapper and the odd mulloway from some of the beaches near Busselton and Dunsborough during the storms. Tailor are sometimes being caught early morning and evening at Elmore Road, Castle Rock, Fish Rock, Bunker Bay, Smiths Beach and Mitchells. There is still the odd salmon being caught at Hamelin Bay, Moses Rock and Injidup. Herring are reliable target at many of the beaches and there are skippy getting close to 1kg being caught from the reef holes and gutters on the west coast of Cape Naturaliste.

Freshwater

Be sure to have your say on the important South West trout fishery’s future and complete the survey.
Exploring skinny streams in thick bushland while fly-fishing or casting your favourite minnow at a dam surrounded by idyllic Karri trees — the South West trout fishery is truly unique. However, as many freshwater fishers know, environmental changes, including annual declining rainfall in WA’s south, pose a risk to the freshwater fishery. That’s why Recfishwest is calling freshwater anglers to complete a quick survey to play their part in shaping the trout fishery’s future. Click here for more and complete the survey.
Mandurah and surrounding areas

Mandurah

The Murray River is still producing black bream and tailor. The beaches around Mandurah and to the north have been producing good skippy, big King George whiting and plenty of sand whiting and herring. There are plenty of pilch being caught along the beaches around Madora and Golden Bay. The southern beaches have been fishing quite well with herring and whiting being taken midweek along with a few tailor. Salmon seem to have moved offshore from the area, however, there are still a few being caught from the shore. For those venturing off Mandurah in the vessel, skippy and King George whiting have been caught. Pink snapper have also been found, in addition to dhufish.

Secret Harbour / Warnbro / Port Kennedy / Rockingham / Safety Bay

The Penguin Island area has produced good numbers of sand whiting and a few flathead. Flounder along with reasonable tailor and the odd salmon have also been caught. Boat fishers sheltering within Warnbro Sound this week have caught small pink snapper, mulloway, King George whiting and squid. Point Peron is the spot to try for tarwhine and tailor.
Perth catches
How're the colours! Tony Ryan was pleasantly surprised after this harlequin took his Abrolhos Tackle jig while he was fishing in 40m off Perth recently. What's your favourite looking fish to catch? 😁😁😁

Boats

In case you missed it, deployment of the north metro artificial reef’s 293 modules at a safe and accessible spot 8km off Ocean Reef was complete last month. If you want to fish the reef in the future, find the coordinates here!

Pink snapper are being caught in reasonable numbers near Stragglers and Mewstone. The west side of Carnac and Garden islands have also been providing catches of pink snapper as has the southern side of Rottnest Island. Dhufish and breaksea cod were caught in 50m to 70m of water north-west of Rottnest. Baldchin groper seem to be getting picked up more regularly along the coral off Hillarys, Ocean Reef and Mindarie. The inshore reefs off Mindarie and Hillarys as well, as those out from Fremantle, are worth trying for tailor. King George whiting can be found in 10m to 20m of water off Cottesloe and City Beach. The seagrass beds between Fremantle and Carnac Island are producing heaps of squid, which are varying from quite small to 35cm-plus tube lengths.

Young gun Tom Corrie can't get enough of the early morning snapper action off Perth at the moment!

Shore-based

There were reports of pink snapper landed at North Mole after the recent period of rough conditions. It would be of no surprise if more snapper were caught at Woodman Point, Hillarys Marina and Mindarie breakwater in the days ahead. Herring, skippy and garfish were caught at both moles as well as at Woodman Point and the northern marina rock walls. Tailor and mulloway are worth targeting in the deeper gutters formed along the metropolitan beaches by last week’s storm. Some good sessions on squid are being had on the rocks at Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour and Hillarys Marina. The yacht clubs in the lower reaches of the Swan River are fishing well for black bream.
