Shhhhh, secret spot!
🍔 BIG MAC🍔 Frank Zanatta fished with the Perth Fishing Safaris on a North West land-based fishing adventure and got stuck into a couple of Spanish macks at Quobba, including this 14kg beauty!

Recfishwest Communications Officer Zach Relph joined the North Regional TAFE crew last week to catch broodstock in the Lower Ord for the ongoing Lake Kununurra barramundi stocking program.
Broome catches
RED! Steve Woosman landed his PB red emperor while wetting a line with his son Mitch recently off Broome. "It was an epic day with epic conditions," Mitch said. Picture: Salty Sessions

Boats

Threadfin and bluenose salmon can be targeted on bait and lure in Roebuck Bay. If you haven't watch this awesome short-film on Roebuck Bay's threadfin salmon.
Sailfish have continued to be encountered in good numbers off Barred Creek, while small black marlin have been raised near The Peanut Reef and out from Port Smith. Longtail tuna have been appearing in big schools within Roebuck Bay. Spanish mackerel have been responding to minnows trolled off Entrance Point and Gantheaume Point.

Jade Relph landed this crimson snapper while enjoying top-class conditions off Broome recently.

Shore based

A variety of species including queenfish, bluebone, mackerel and trevally have been caught on baits and lures at Gantheaume Point. More queenies and trevally have been appearing at Entrance Point, especially an hour either side of the change in tide. Whiting and garfish can be picked along Cable Beach and Coconut Wells. Try the entrances of the local creeks for threadfin salmon, bluenose salmon, queenfish and trevally.

Kimberley barra! Steph Heil was more than happy after catching this slab of silver this week. 👍👍👍
Exmouth catches
Peak Sportfishing Adventures have been putting clients onto plenty of marlin off Exmouth this week.

Boats

Spanish mackerel can be targeted on bibbed minnows and rigged garfish trolled in depths of 15m to 30m behind the westside reef.
Spearfisher Steven Langford speared a solid dolphinfish at Exmouth FAD2 earlier this week. Reef fishers have been picking up a good mix of species, including red emperor, Rankin cod and coral trout, in depths that have varied from 10m to 100m. Dolphinfish, wahoo and sailfish have been caught on skirted lures trolled in 40m to 100m of water near Tantabiddi.

Wahhoooo! Recfishwest's Sedin Hasanovic landed this wahoo off Exmouth on Wednesday. 😁😁😁

Shore based

There have been some nice spangled emperor caught on baits and lures at the west coast accesses. Queenfish and small brassy, golden and giant trevally have been common along the westside. Bluebone are sometimes being caught near the tip of Northwest Cape. If you've got an upcoming trip to Exmouth planned, read about how best to fish the location on our ilovefishing website:
Bigger giant trevally are a chance on large poppers and stickbaits along some of te west coast accesses. The Exmouth Marina has been providing catches of an assortment of species including queenfish, trevally, yellowfin bream and squid.

Scott’s Species – dogtooth tuna, a bucket list pelagic

WOOF WOOF! Scott Coghlan was chasing GT when this dogtooth tuna took his stickbait at Cocos.🐶

Dogtooth, or doggies as many fishers call them, are one of the most prized gamefish in the world, writes Western Angler editor Scott Coghlan. For many fishos, Scotty included, doggies are a bucket list capture. Read more about the formidable pelagic species that have fearsome teeth in this week’s edition of Scott’s Species.

Kalbarri catches

Boats

Reef fishers have been catching dhufish in the 4kg to 8kg range alongside pink snapper, baldchin groper and coral trout not too far from shore. Red emperor, Rankin cod and spangled emperor were among the species caught beyond the 30m depths. Spanish mackerel and yellowfin tuna are likely lurking in and around the cleaner offshore waters. Dinghy and small boat fishers have been enjoying some entertaining sessions on mulloway while on anchor just inside the mouth of the Murchison River.

Shore based

Tailor have been appearing most mornings and evenings at Red Bluff, Wittecarra Creek, Oyster Reef and Chinaman's. Herring are also a chance at Red Bluff in the morning, while some of the other beaches have been producing dart. Pink snapper, baldchin groper, trevally and sweep were among the species landed at Pot Alley and Goats Gulch, when conditions permitted. There are still mulloway being caught at Chinaman's and from the jetties. Black bream in the 35cm to 40cm range and estuary cod have been caught near Murchison House Station.
Geraldton catches

Boats

African Reef has dhufish, baldchin groper, pink snapper and coral trout on offer at the moment. In 12m to 35m of water north-west of town, pink snapper to 80cm, dhufish to 75cm and coral trout have been caught on baits and lures. If you're heading out off of Geraldton and want a couple of tips to catch a dhuie, visit our ilovefishing website here:
Dinghy and kayak fishers have been doing well on skippy, herring, pike and squid within the inshore reefs.

Shore based

Mulloway in the 80cm to 1.3m range are still being caught at Southgates, Greenough, Drummond's Cove and the rock walls near town. Tailor in the 30cm to 50cm category are being picked up at similar spots as well as at Flat Rocks, Point Moore and Separation Point. Herring have been a little harder to find, with most catches coming from the reef areas. Surf fishers who have been walking out on the reefs at low tide have been catching some nice skippy up to 1kg.
Lancelin catches
Jon Flannelly joined Peter Fullarton, of Tailored Treks, to fish near Lancelin and landed this tailor.

Shore based

A lot of the open beaches have been weeded lately. However, some spots have been clear and sheltered from swells making it easier to fish. A few places worth checking are Fence Reef, the gutters along Back Beach, North Point of Lancelin Bay, Virgin Reef, Didie Point and Narrow Neck. The majority of the groups fishing last weekend were using drones to drop baits, showing just how quickly this trend has taken off. The drone fishers mainly caught pink snapper, but there were reports of one dhufish and Samson fish. Beach casters found some quality tailor and good size sand whiting.

In case you missed it: Million milestone marked at Lake Kununurra

Here are some of the 170,000 barra released into Lake Kununurra this month through the Lake Kununurra barramundi stocking program. Click above to watch some of the action from the event.

It was great for Recfishwest to be a part of the momentous community fish stocking event at Lake Kununurra on 18 July, as the one millionth barra was stocked as part of an ongoing stocking program. Click here to read more about the community release event and watch a fantastic video of the release. From little things, big things grow — and the stocking program's success is proven by the photo below! Lake Kununurra Barramundi Stocking Program member and DPIRD senior fisheries officer Luke Koyts headed out for a fish on Lake Kununurra on Monday afternoon and landed this 1m beast! Awesome stuff.

Luke Koyts made the most of great weather on Monday afternoon to catch this big Lake Kununurra barra.

Esperance catches

Boats

Herring, snook and squid have been caught within the bay this week. Blue groper, queen snapper and breaksea cod have been coming from the ground near the islands. Nannygai to 50cm, Samson fish and yellowtail kingfish were among the species caught by those who managed to travel wide.

Shore based

The Esperance Jetty and Taylor Street Jetty have lots of herring and squid on offer. Small King George whiting, flathead and flounder can be picked up from Bandy Creek Boat Harbour. There are still big numbers of salmon turning up at the local beaches as well as those east of town. Thomas River has been producing skippy to 5kg and gummy sharks. Try Duke of Orleans Bay for bronze whaler sharks and salmon.
Great Southern catches

Boats

Strong winds and big swells limited the amount of fishing performed offshore. A few who managed to travel to the coral in 60m to 80m picked up some snapper, breaksea cod, dhufish and skippy. King George whiting are being found in better numbers in the inshore areas that have cleaner water. In saying that though, there were a few who were able to score nice feeds of Geordies in areas inshore where the water was rather tannin in colour. Squid are mostly being picked up along the seagrass in excess of 8m.

Shore based

The King and Kalgan rivers remain very discoloured and only producing catches of black bream for those using baits. If you want to find out more about fishing the estuaries in the south coast, visit our ilovefishing website:
The handful of diehards who put up with some fairly ordinary conditions caught salmon at Bornholm, Cosy Corner, Shelley Beach, Bremer Bay and Hopetoun. Skippy to 1.5kg have been picked up at some of beaches with deeper gutters and reef including Bluff Creek and Cheynes Beach. Frenchman Bay is worth a try for King George whiting while herring and sand whiting can be targeted at most beaches.
South West catches
Geographe Bay has produced big pinkies this winter, as show by Busselton fisher Trudy Morehouse.

Boats

Pink snapper have been caught on unweighted, or lightly weighed, mulies and scaly mackerel off Bunbury and Busselton, when conditions have been favourable to boating. Small dhufish, skippy and Samson fish have also been picked up alongside the snapper off Busselton.
There have been some nice squid picked up along the seagrass meadows when the water has been clearer near Busselton. King George whiting catches are improving off Bunbury, while skipping have been mustered up once burley is introduced.

Shore based

Surf fishers who put in the hours and put up with the wind and rain soaking whole fish baits along the Siesta Park to Busselton Jetty stretch landed pink snapper, mulloway and gummy sharks. Tailor have been appearing morning and evening at Honeycombs, Injidup and Smiths Beach. Herring are a reliable target along both sides of Cape Naturaliste, while skippy can be found in the deep holes near the rocky headlands and coastal reefs. Those braving the cold conditions and fishing the beaches north and south of Bunbury have caught mulloway at night this week, but they have kept the cards close to their chest in regards to where the silver ghosts were landed. One fishing report reader quipped: "I've caught a couple between Myalup and Stratham — that narrows the area down for you."

Freshwater

Click the photo above to watch the highlights from the latest marron release at Waroona Dam.

Recfishwest and Aquafarms have released 50,000 one-year-old marron across Logue Brook Dam and Waroona Dam this month as part of an exciting stocking program backed by the Recreational Fishing Initiatives Fund (RFIF). Read more about the program!

Mandurah and surrounds

Mandurah

Tim’s Thicket to White Hills has been a quiet this week, but there are still a few reports of big tailor being taken along when conditions permit. The Dawesville Cut is still producing plenty of King George whiting, chopper tailor, herring and pilch. Squid are also being caught in reasonable numbers. Blue swimmer crabs are being caught in deeper water and also in the Mary Street Lagoon. Yellowfin whiting are starting to show up along the beaches from Madora to Secret Harbour. Black bream continue to be taken in good numbers and size in the lower reaches of both the Murray and Serpentine rivers. Unfortunately, the inclement weather conditions prevented many boat fishers from travelling out wide off Mandurah in search for demersal species.

Secret Harbour / Warnbro / Port Kennedy / Rockingham / Safety Bay

Palm Beach's jetty is producing herring and skippy, while there are also a lot of squid also in the area. Night fishing from the structure has produced mulloway this week. Beach anglers have found whiting and herring. Other locations in the region that have been turning on good whiting are the Penguin Island sand bar and the beaches at Secret Harbour. Rockingham Beach jetty have been producing herring and squid. There are a few herring along most of the beaches, but not in any great number. There are still some salmon hanging around Point Peron. Once again, the rough seas have meant many boats have remained in the shed this week.
Perth catches
Alex Carter withstood cold conditions recently to land this mulloway from somewhere in the metro.

Boats

King George whiting have been caught between the mainland and Rottnest Island, when conditions have allowed vessels to get out. The broken ground in line with the Three Mile Reef between Scarborough and City Beach, the 12m to 20m depths off Cottesloe, and Parmelia Bank have been among the spots where Geordies in the 30cm to 55cm range were caught recently.

Plump sand whiting, goatfish and skippy were some of the bycatches picked up around the KG grounds. For those who were able to find a gap in the weather, there were some bigger dhufish in the 12kg to 18kg range caught off Hillarys while the waters off Ocean Reef, Mindarie and Yanchep have again been where most of the baldchin groper have been caught. The inshore seagrass areas are still producing lots of squid and the odd cuttlefish.

Shore based

Pink snapper continued to be caught from the metropolitan rock walls and beaches during the recent period of rough weather. Woodman Point, South Mole, North Mole, Hillarys Marina and Mindarie Marina were among the spots where snapper in the 3kg to 7kg were landed this week. Some of the metropolitan beaches also produced snapper, however, those who were fortunate enough to land the prized fish were reluctant to disclose even the general location of their catches. Tailor have been appearing in the morning and evening at Cottesloe Groyne, Grant Street Reef, Swanbourne Drain and Trigg Point. There are lots of herring along the coast, while the reefs near Cottesloe and north of Waterman Bay have been producing garfish and pike. Some nice sand and school whiting have been caught at South Beach, City Beach and Floreat. Mulloway are a chance in the lower reaches of the Swan River following the recent rain. Juvenile Samson fish and pink snapper can offer some entertainment on light gear at North Fremantle and East Fremantle during the winter months.
