RECFISHWEST FISHING REPORT EDITOR
Slender, silver, speed machines! Giant herring are without doubt an awesome sportfish to target, writes Western Angler editor Scott Coghlan in this week’s Scott’s Species. When they are around and on the bite, the big boils, bow waves, explosive strikes and stunning leaps make for an unforgettable fishing experience. Read the latest Scott's Species.
King Bay Game Fishing Club’s prestigious fishing tournament – the Dampier Classic – will be held this weekend from today until Monday. Many game fishing enthusiasts will chase hard-fighting fish including big billfish, trevally and wahoo during the 45th running of the competition. Recfishwest are delighted to be a part of this year’s event and will be at the filleting tables each night collecting fish samples for the ongoing Fishing for Science program. Fishing tournaments offer an excellent opportunity to collect data from a whole range of species for scientific research. And, for all the mad-keen young fishers, the Recfishwest team will also be hosting a SunSmart Fishing Clinic on Sunday from 11am to 1pm at the KBGFC gantry. Contact King Bay Game Fishing Club to register your kid(s). Find more details about Fishing for Science and how it promotes greater stewardship of the ocean here.
Yesterday afternoon, 10,000 more marron were stocked in Waroona Dam as part of the marron stocking program. Recfishwest's Steph Watts and Matt Gillett joined the Aquafarms crew and released the one-year-old crustaceans. Funded by recfishing licence fees, this initiative will see 300,000 marron stocked across the Peel and South West regions over the next three years. Yesterday's release comes just weeks after 50,000 of the South West freshwater fishing icons were stocked across Waroona Dam and Logue Brook Dam. For skippers who found a gap in the weather window, pink snapper were caught alongside Samson fish, amberjack and the odd dhufish in 20m to 50m of water south-west of Rottnest Island. Bigger dhufish were picked up off Two Rocks, while baldchin groper were found off Hillarys and Ocean Reef. Jayson Spencer, pictured above, had an epic session at Cockburn Sound earlier this week, catching a couple of solid pinkies. The Sound is a safe and accessible location right on the metropolitan doorstep. If you're looking for a family-friendly place to fish, give Cockburn Sound a go. King George whiting between 30cm and 55cm continue to be caught near The Windmills and along Parmelia Bank along with sand whiting, goatfish and flathead. It may take for the waters to clear somewhat before squid return to the inshore seagrass areas. Young gun Tom Corrie loves chasing pinkies in the shallows off Perth.
