Shhhhh, secret spot!
Woweee! Jeff Elliot's recent adventure to the Montebello Islands was a trip to remember, catching many awesome fish including this coral trout. If you want to know more about the Montes, read here.

Lake Kununurra barramundi stocking program

After the latest release of juvenile barra into Lake Kununurra on 18 July, attended by 150 locals and holidaymakers, North Regional TAFE (NRT) was already casting its eye to the future – catching more fish for breeding purposes – or broodstock, as they are called. "We need to collect male barra for our maturation tanks at the Broome Aquaculture Centre so we can keep stocking fish into Lake Kununurra,” NRT’s Milton Williams explained. “Barra are born as males, but transition into females at about 80cm. At the moment, we’re running out of males so we need to collect more while we’re here in Kununurra.” Read more here.

Broome catches
Chris Cole, aka The Wildlife Angler, was hoping to head wide last weekend for red emperor but the fishing relatively close to shore proved too good to steam past. Chris caught this longtail tuna!

Boats

Sailfish continue to be encountered off Barred Creek and near The Peanut, as well as in waters farther north towards the top of Dampier Peninsula. Spanish mackerel and longtail tuna are evident in similar areas as well as in waters off Entrance Point and Gantheaume Point.

This queenfish was welcome bycatch when Jade Relph was jigging the shallows last Sunday afternoon.

Reef fishing has been productive in 30m to 50m where good numbers of coral trout, red emperor, Rankin cod and blue-lined emperor have been caught. Threadfin and bluenose salmon can be targeted on surface lures within Roebuck Bay. If you're planning a holiday to Broome, click here for fishing tips and information on our 'I Love Fishing' website.

What a catch! Rod Palmer couldn't believe it when he landed this Spanish mack while chasing threadies in a creek south of Broome.

Shore based

Giant trevally in the 10kg to 20kg range have been caught on surface lures at Entrance Point and some of the rocky headlands located not too far from town. Queenfish and small trevally have also been appearing at the jetty, especially an hour either side of the change in tide. Threadfin salmon and bluenose salmon can be targeted near the mouths of the local creeks. Barramundi are occasionally being caught in the local creeks and the river.
Exmouth catches
Peak Sportfishing clients have been catching big billfish, including this sail, off Exmouth recently. 👍

Boats

Billfish enthusiasts have been raising, and landing, good numbers of sailfish and small black marlin in depths of about 100m west of Tantabiddi. Spanish mackerel have been responding well to bibbed minnows trolled along the back of the reef line.

Jim Bastow has been making the most of his new digs at Exmouth, recently landing this Rankin cod.

The Spaniards have also been striking stickbaits and poppers intended for giant trevally. Two of the mackerel caught on stickbaits this week weighed 34kg and 35kg, respectively. Reef fishers have been doing well on red emperor and Rankin cod in about 60m of water. Goldband jobfish are being found in 100m and ruby snapper are in 200m and deeper.

For gun fisher and talented photographer Marco Fraschetti, nothing beats catching solid sailfish.

Shore based

Sportfishers have been enjoying some entertaining sessions on queenfish and small trevally while casting stickbaits and poppers near mullet schools at the west side accesses. Spangled emperor can also be targeted along the west side, especially north of Tantabiddi, while bluebone are a chance near Mildura Wreck. Yellowfin whiting are being caught along the town and lower gulf beaches. Squid are still being caught at Learmonth Jetty, the marina rock walls and Bundegi Jetty during an incoming tide.

Scott’s Species – dhufish, a WA fishing icon

Bunbury's Simon McDonnell is among fishers in the State's south who has an affinity with dhufish.

The mighty dhufish. They’re WA’s most iconic fish for a myriad of reasons, writes Western Angler editor Scott Coghlan in this edition of Scott’s Species. We take a look back at this well-read article, which was initially published in May, as Scott explains why majority of fishers in the southern half of the State have "a big dhufish” on their bucket list.

Kalbarri catches

Boats

Spanish mackerel have been caught on rigged garfish and bibbed minnows trolled north and south of the river mouth. Longtail tuna and mack tuna have been found feeding on baitfish near the surface offshore. Reef fishers who travelled to the 30m to 50m depths north-west of town scored red emperor, dhufish, Rankin cod and spangled emperor. Soft plastic and metal jigs have been working well on pink snapper and baldchin groper not too far from the base of the cliffs. Visit our 'I Love Fishing' website to read more about fishing at Kalbarri

Shore based

Tailor have been appearing some mornings and evenings at Wittecarra Creek and Red Bluff. Bigger tailor are a chance at The Siphon, Oyster Reef and Chinaman's Beach. Mulloway catches have slowed in the lower reaches of the Murchison River. Storm garfish and herring are a chance at Red Bluff during a morning when the winds are light. Black bream and estuary cod can be targeted near the jetties, pens and other rocky and woody structure within the Murchison River. The sand flats in the lower parts of the river are still offering opportunities for yellowfin whiting.
Geraldton catches

Boats

Dinghy and kayak fishers have been catching squid, skippy, herring and pike along the seagrass meadows within the inshore reefs. The African Reef and South West Bank areas have been producing dhufish, pink snapper, baldchin groper and sweetlip. More snapper have been found near the shipping channel and in waters north-west of town. The back of Pensioners Bank is worth trying for coral trout and Spanish mackerel.

Shore based

Seaweed deposited on many of the beaches has created challenging conditions for surf fishers. There are some tailor in the 40cm to 60cm range being caught at the Dongara rock groynes, near Flat Rocks, Separation Point and Southgates. The stretch between Drummond's Cove and Horrocks are also worth a try for tailor. Mulloway are a chance near the Greenough River mouth, Tarcoola Beach, Southgates and Separation Point. Click here for rigs and techniques which could help you land a mulloway. There are yellowfin and school whiting at many of the town beaches. The northern side of the Batavia Marina has been producing mulloway and small sharks at night.
Lancelin catches
Austin Prosser-Brightling landed this chunky tailor while casting lures south of Lancelin. Classic catch!

Boats

There were plenty of boats taking advantage of the improved conditions this week. Fishers were encountering Samson fish schooling on structure. Direction Bank continues to produce dhufish., while the coral patches in 35m had baldchin groper, breaksea and pink snapper on offer. Inside the bay, herring schools are widespread and being shadowed by feeding Sambos. Pumping a burley trail around the deeper weed banks has been attracting skippy, snook, squid and pike.

Shore based

Surf casters were reporting fishing south of Lancelin was slow, but tailor were on offer. Anglers fishing in the north found that tailor were aggressively taking lures, with fish averaging around 50cm. A few mulloway were also reported from north of town. Lancelin's jetty usually produces the best fishing after the sun sets, though this week the herring schools have been moving in mid-afternoon. Tourists staying at the Experience Lancelin Caravan Park found great fishing within walking distance of the campsites. The beach between Edwards Island and sea rescue has been fishing very well for herring alongside tarwhine, King George whiting and flathead.

Recfishwest YouTube | Scintillating sportfishing hooks fishers at FADs

Check out the awesome sportfishing which has taken place at the FADs deployed across the State.

Funded by licence fees through the Recreational Fishing Initiatives Fund (RFIF), the State-wide fish aggregating devices (FADs) trial program began in late 2019 and has provided a popular new addition to the fishing landscape for thousands of fishers and spearfishers. Read what lessons were learnt in the  opening two years of the three-year program and how FADs are helping make fishing in WA event better here.

Esperance catches
There have been a few great salmon on offer for Oli Stevenson along Esperance's beaches lately.

Boats

Dinghy and small boat fishers have been catching lots of big sand whiting in 4m to 10m of water off Chapmans Point and Blue Haven. Yellowtail kingfish to 20kg and Samson fish to 30kg have been caught on soft plastics and stick baits near the islands. Reef fishers have been achieving their bag limits of nannygai, harlequin fish and breaksea cod out wide.

Shore based

Salmon are still present at many of the local beaches, including Salmon Beach and Fourth Beach. Oli Stevenson, pictured above, is among the local anglers who have been targeting salmon this week. The Esperance Jetty and Taylor Street Jetty both have herring, skippy, garfish and squid on offer. King George whiting, flathead and black bream are among the species being caught at Bandy Creek Boat Harbour. The beaches to the east of Esperance have been producing lots of gummy sharks of about 8kg to 10kg. Herring and skippy are prevalent along big parts of the coast.
Great Southern catches

Boats

Deepwater enthusiasts who travelled to the edge of the shelf, and beyond, scored nannygai, grey-banded cod and hapuka. More nannygai were caught in 50m to 80m of water together with dhufish, breaksea cod, pink and queen snapper. King George whiting, sand whiting and squid were among the species caught through the inshore waters of King George Sound, Princess Royal Harbour and Oyster Harbour.

Shore based

Bread-and-butter species such as herring, tarwhine and skippy have been common at many of the beaches. Some of the areas which have been protected from wind, including Frenchman Bay, Little Beach and Cosy Corner, have been producing King George whiting. The odd salmon has been caught at Bornholm, Lowlands and Cables. The extreme lower reaches of the King and Kalgan rivers are where most of the black bream have recently been caught while the water in systems remains rather discoloured. Visit our 'I Love Fishing' website for hints on how to best fish Albany and surrounding areas here.
South West catches
Enjoying glassy conditions off Bunbury, Daniel Varadi landed this pink snapper on the light outfit. Nice!

Boats

Bunbury's terrific pink snapper fishing has continued this week, with fishers catching the sought-after species in 8m to 15m off the South West capital. Daniel Varadi, pictured above, was among Bunbury fishers who got out last weekend to target pinkies. King George whiting were found in similar grounds off Bunbury, while there were reports of big Samson fish at the Bunbury artificial reef.

What a catch! Talented artist Adam Ashdown landed this lovely dhuie off Dunsborough this week.

Pink snapper in the 40cm to 80cm range have also been caught on anchor off Busselton and in depths leading up to 50m off the west coast of Cape Naturaliste alongside dhufish, breaksea cod and queen snapper. King George whiting can be targeted off Eagle Bay and Quindalup. Squid catches are increasing along the seagrass beds as the water clarity improves.

Jake Atkinson had an epic session off Bunbury last weekend, catching this pink snapper. Fantastic! 👏

Shore based

Daniel Liuto has continued to land mulloway, ranging from 15kg to 20kg, from the Busselton Jetty after dark this week. Herring and salmon trout have been picked up from the rocky headlands located within Geographe Bay. Salmon are occasionally being caught at Hamelin Bay, Contos, Mitchells and Bunker Bay. There have been some nice yellowfin and school whiting recently caught along the sand flats near Quindalup. The beaches north and south of Bunbury are fishing well for herring and the occasional tailor. Black bream fishing in the Brunswick and Collie rivers should improve in the coming weeks following the recent rains.

Freshwater

At Harvey Dam last Sunday, John Dempsey scored this FAT rainbow trout. Cracking trout, John!

We’re calling on freshwater anglers to complete a quick 10-minute survey to play your part in shaping the trout fishery’s future. Casting lures into Harvey Dam proved fruitful for Giordano Gervasi at the weekend. 🌈🌈🌈

Mandurah and surrounds
The pink snapper fishing off the Rockingham-Mandurah area has been fantastic when the weather conditions have allowed boats to head out, as shown by mad-keen angler Clay Lewis! 😁😁😁

Mandurah

As shown by Clay Lewis above, pink snapper have been found off Mandurah this week when conditions have been suitable for boating. Dhufish have also been caught in the 30m to 40m depths, while Samson fish have also kept fishers entertained in similar areas. For those fishing from the shore, tailor have been caught on dusk along Mandurah's northern stretch of coastline.
Perth catches
This dhufish brought a smile to Alex Carter's face while fishing north of Perth recently. 🐟👀🤩

Boats

Squid have been caught throughout Cockburn Sound this week by those who have persisted among the murky water following the inclement conditions. This safe and accessible fishing location is likely to have more squid on offer once the water clarity improves. Pink snapper continue to be caught in very good numbers off the metropolitan coast. Marco Orifici, of Anglers Fishing World, landed good sized snapper off Fremantle on Saturday morning. Dhufish and breaksea cod have mostly been caught in 40m and deeper while baldchin groper remain in bigger numbers off Hillarys, Ocean Reef and Mindarie. King George whiting can be targeted near The Windmills and along the 10m to 20m depths off Cottesloe and City Beach.

Shore based

Tailor have appeared in very good numbers along the metropolitan beaches. South Beach, Grant Street, Swanbourne, City Beach, Floreat, Brighton, Pipidinny and Yanchep Lagoon were among the spots where tailor in the 35cm to 65cm range were caught morning and night. There are still lots of herring being caught at the rock walls and jetties, where squid have also been turning up at night. Sand whiting have been picked up in good numbers at Secret Harbour, City Beach and in front of Club Capricorn. Black bream enthusiasts have been enjoying some good sessions on fish to 40cm on hardbody and soft plastic lures near Burswood and the Old Swan Brewery.
