G'day <>,

A 7kg metro dhufish on light gear... land-based! Michael Hill's fantastic catch, pictured below, is just one of many terrific fishing photos featured in this week's Recfishwest State-wide Fishing Report — proudly presented by Shimano!

Once again, fishers Joachim Azzopardi, Peter Fullarton and John Curtis have reported what is biting in the sections below from Broome to Esperance.

With plenty of great fish caught off Bunbury recently, we've homed in to look at what fishers have been catching off the South West capital in this week's report.

Also, we've cast our eye back to a much-loved edition of Scott's Species — coral trout. The well-read piece, written by Western Angler editor Scott Coghlan, is part of the Scott's Species series which provides a unique insight into catching many sought-after species found across WA.

For anyone wanting to contribute to the weekly fishing report, photos reflecting Recfishwest's responsible fish handling practices will be given preference.

If you know someone who would love to receive these reports and needs some help on the fishing front, forward this onto them! Join us here.

To help fishers stay up-to-date with fishing comps across the State, we've unveiled a new 'Fishing Events and Competitions' page on our website. If you've got a comp that you want included on the page, contact Recfishwest's Sedin Hasanovic.

Tight lines and safe fishing!

Catch of the Week!

"I caught my PB land-based dhufish, measuring 74cm and 7kg, on very light gear," Michael Hill said. "To say I am stoked with this catch is a massive understatement - one I will never forget." Well done!

East Kimberley
Beaut barra! Keen fisher Lizz McCullum reeled in this barra while fishing the Ord River last week.😎

The 2021 Apex Kununurra Barra Bash

Want to win a brand-new tinnie valued at $13,000, even if you don’t land a fish? Well, the Apex Kununurra Barra Bash is giving you the chance! A F370 Quintrex Outback Explorer could be yours for simply taking part in the 23rd Barra Bash next weekend from 24-26 September. But that’s not all, Recfishwest have also sponsored a prize for the biggest barra caught on Lake Kununurra during the comp — a Lowrance Elite FS 9 Active Imaging 3-in-1 Transducer. The prize is being sponsored by Recfishwest through our East Kimberley Barra Promotion project, supported by the State Government’s Recreational Fishing Initiatives Fund. The state-of-the-art fish-finding tool will help you spot more structure and cover with refined detail to put you onto more fish. Lake Kununurra is home to 1m-plus barra thanks to a well-managed stocking program which has seen more than 1 million fish released into the waterway since 2013, so there’s every chance you could land a trophy fish. See what other great prizes are on offer at the Barra Bash here.

Shhhhh, secret spot!

Fishing somewhere near Denham, Evie Black made sure this bluebone didn't bust her line! 💪👍🎣

Broome catches
State-wide Fishing Report editor Zach Relph landed a couple of Spaniards off Broome recently.

Boats

Spanish mackerel have continued to keep fishers entertained between Gantheaume Point and Cable Beach. Billfish enthusiasts have been encountering black marlin to 80kg and sailfish in waters off Barred Creek, near The Peanut and farther north of Broome towards the tip of the Dampier Peninsula. Spanish mackerel have been caught in similar areas along with mack tuna and longtail tuna. Reef fishers have been doing well on blue lined emperor, Rankin cod, coral trout and Spanish flag along the ground about 15km to 30 km offshore. Sportfishers have been using stickbaits and soft plastics to catch threadfin salmon, bluenose salmon, queenfish and golden trevally within Roebuck Bay.

Larissa Cortese was more than happy with this Spanish mackerel from Port Smith, south of Broome!

Shore based

Barramundi activity has been increasing within the local creeks and the Fitzroy River, as waters temperatures in these systems continue to rise. Mangrove jack, estuary cod and bluenose salmon have also been caught in these waters. Yellowfin whiting and bream can be targeted along Cable Beach and Coconut Wells. Queenfish and varieties of small trevally have been appearing at the jetty, which has also been producing squid during an incoming tide and at night.
Exmouth catches
🎶 RUBY, RUBY, RUBY, RUBY🎶 How's this beast ruby snapper caught by a fisher aboard a Peak Sportfishing Adventures charter off Exmouth this week! Read more about fishing Exmouth.😁

Boats

Baitfish are building within Exmouth Gulf and their presence has started to bring in lots of sailfish to the upper areas of these waters. More sailfish have been encountered off the west side together with black, blue and striped marlin. There seems to be a lot of Spanish and school mackerel behind the reef line. Reef fishers have been doing well on red emperor wide of the Muiron Islands. Goldband jobfish were caught in 120m this week, while ruby snapper were picked up beyond the 250m line. Ben Knight has been catching giant herring to 1.5m in the lower areas of the Gulf. Dinghy and kayak fishers have been picking up lots of squid not too far from the Exmouth Marina.

Scott Coghlan loves chasing giant herring and landed this beauty on his Shimano Stradic 4000 near Wilderness Island recently. Find out more about giant herring in this edition of Scott's Species here.

Shore based

Spangled emperor have been caught on floating, or very lightly-weighted, mulies at some of the west coast accesses including Tulki and Jansz. Trevally seem to be about in lesser numbers along the coast, however, there have been lots of queenfish appearing within casting range at some of the accesses and at Bundegi Jetty. Squid can be targeted at the marina and Learmonth Jetty. Yellowfin whiting to an impressive 40cm have been caught on prawn threaded to longshank hooks at the town and lower Gulf beaches.

Scott’s Species – coral trout, an eye-catching prized catch

Awesome! How're the colours of this coral trout that Baylee Webb caught while fishing off Exmouth.

For many WA fishers, coral trout are a sought-after species when wetting a line in the State’s north. Western Angler editor Scott Coghlan takes a look as to why coral trout are considered one of Australia’s best table fish, while also discussing their amazing red colouration and aggressive fighting in this previous edition of Scott's Species.

Kalbarri catches

Boats

Dhufish, pink snapper and baldchin groper are being found near the Sand Patch. Red emperor and Rankin cod have mostly been picked up in depths greater than 40m north-west of the river mouth. Soft plastic and metal jigs have been working well on snapper, baldchin groper and coral trout not too far out from the cliffs. Masses of baitfish in many areas offshore suggest mackerel and tuna might be still about. Click here for hints and tips on fishing at Kalbarri.

Shore based

Land-based fishers have been catching tailor to 65cm morning and evening at Wittecarra Creek, Red Bluff and near the river mouth. Two mulloway, one measuring 1.2m and the other 1.3m, were caught at the marina jetty in consecutive nights. It comes as many smaller 'silver ghosts' were caught within the Murchison River and along Kalbarri's beaches this week. Read more about catching mulloway here. Rock fishers have been catching pink snapper and baldchin groper at some of the cliff platforms. More snapper were caught from shore towards Wagoe Beach. Black bream, estuary cod and yellowfin whiting were some of the other species caught in the Murchison River.
Geraldton catches

Boats

Boat fishers have generally been finding the bigger dhufish in deeper waters this week with 8kg to 14kg specimens found in the 40m to 50m depths off Point Moore and similar depths wide of South West Bank. Pink snapper up to 6kg have been located in big schools near African Reef, South West Bank and off Drummond's Cove. Coral trout and Spanish mackerel have been caught on bibbed minnows trolled along the western edge of Pensioner Bank.

Shore based

Tailor appeared in bigger numbers this week, with dozens of fish in the 40cm to 65cm range caught at Explosives, Pages, Drummond's Cove, Coronation and the Batavia Marina. Pike were present at similar spots while Drummond's and some of the rock walls have been producing skippy to 1kg. School-size mulloway have been common south of Coronation and at Jacksons Hole. Pages has been the pick of the spots for yellowfin whiting and school whiting, while some good catches were also experienced at Drummond's.
Lancelin catches
Chris Hartanto joined Peter Fullarton, of Tailored Treks, and landed this little yellowtail kingfish from the 'yak off Lancelin.

Boats

Dhufish, breaksea cod and pink snapper have been caught along the inshore reefs systems in 10m to 15m of water this week. Good numbers of demersal fish were also reported from the 30m depths, with baldchin groper making the bulk of the catch from the deeper waters. Yellowtail kingfish schools have been found along the bay's fringing reefs. Inside the bay, there have been herring, skippy and snook caught along the seaweed beds. King George whiting have been found on top of the sand holes. Lobster potters have been catching good numbers of reds from the near shore reef systems.

Did you attend last year's Fish In The 'Burbs at Austin Lakes Estate? Backed by the Recreational Fishing Initiatives Fund (RFIF), the project provided a family-friendly and fun fishing event the local community during the long-weekend just a stone’s throw – or, in this case, a line’s throw – from their homes. Cast your eye back and see what took place.

Esperance catches

Boats

Dinghy and small boat fishers have been catching bull herring, large sand whiting and squid in close. Nannygai to 55cm, breaksea cod, queen snapper and harlequin fish were among the species picked up near the islands and out wide. Schools of Samson fish in the 10kg to 20kg range have been encountered near the islands. Mitchell Johnson has been trolling bibbed minnows to catch yellowtail kingfish to 13kg.

Shore based

Herring, skippy and squid have all been on offer at the Esperance Jetty and Taylor Street Jetty this week. It comes as flathead, King George whiting and black bream have been landed at the Bandy Creek Boat Harbour. Salmon remain present at Salmon Beach, Fourth Beach, Roses, Dunn Rock, Poison Creek and Thomas River. Skippy to 2kg have been coming from Fourteen Mile Beach alongside gummy shark and the odd mulloway.
Great Southern catches
Deep dropping off Albany, Brody Ogle hauled up this hapuka. Awesome effort, Brody, great catch!

Boats

Crews who travelled to the edge of the shelf and beyond — when the weather permitted —  scored hapuka, grey-banded cod and blue-eye trevalla. The 60m to 80m depths off Peaceful Bay, Parrys and Cheynes Beach have again been fishing better for mixed reef species — including dhufish, breaksea cod, queen snapper, harlequin fish and pink snapper — compared to the grounds due south of Albany. Yellowtail kingfish and Samson fish have been encountered near the reef areas. King George whiting have required some effort through the inshore waters. Results have varied on squid while sand whiting remain rather scarce in close.

Shore based

Visit our 'I Love Fishing' website and read more about fishing at Albany here! Surf fishers have been satisfied with their mixed catches of herring, skippy and tarwhine at the local beaches. Tarwhine have been more prolific the farther west a fisher has been prepared to travel. Tailor have been caught early morning and around dusk at Sand Patch, Bornholm, Peaceful Bay and Parrys. Herring have been appearing in very good numbers at the marina and Emu Point during the incoming tide. Baits and soft plastics have been producing better results on black bream and mulloway in the King and Kalgan rivers while the water in both systems remains rather discoloured.
South West catches
Photobomb! A couple of whales decided to join Adam Ashdown's photo as he was posing with this lovely dhufish off Dunsborough. If you've got a South West fishing photo to share, tag #recfishwest.

Boats

Reef fishers have been doing well on dhufish, baldchin groper and breaksea cod in depths of 25m to 50m off Bunbury. Pink snapper have been caught in slightly shallower ground, especially early morning and at night. King George whiting can be targeted off Hollow Beach and Peppermint Grove Beach. Deep dropping enthusiasts caught blue-eye trevalla and bass groper in 250m to 600m of water.

BOOM! Peter Johnston landed his PB pink snapper while fishing off Dunsborough last weekend. 🙌

South West fishers are still marvelling at the massive 26.4kg dhufish Luke Thom caught off Augusta last week. Dozens of smaller dhufish were caught in 30m to 50m of water off Hamelin Bay, Cowaramup Bay and Canal Rocks. Pink snapper and baldchin groper seem to have moved into the deeper waters of Geographe Bay. King George whiting catches have been improving off Eagle Bay, Quindalup and Abbey Beach. Fishers deep dropping have found hapuka in the 20kg to 25kg range in about 350m of water.

Young gun Lachlan Atkinson with a lovely pinkie off Bunbury from earlier this week.

Shore based

Surf fishers and drone fishers have caught pink snapper at Preston Beach and Myalup in recent weeks. Tailor have been appearing at both spots in the morning and evening, as well as Buffalo and Belvedere. The Bunbury Back Beach also has tailor on offer, in addition to herring. Herring can be targeted at many areas that feature rock or reef as well as the Bunbury Fishing Jetty, where sand whiting, skippy and squid are also on offer. Small poppers and miniature stickbaits have been working well on yellowfin and school whiting along the sand flats near Quindalup. There are still lots of herring being caught from the rocky headlands located along both sides of Cape Naturaliste. Tailor and juvenile salmon are being caught some mornings and evenings at Point Picquet, Bunker Bay, Smiths Beach, Injidup and Honeycombs. Yellowtail kingfish and Samson fish are often caught from the rock platforms during the start of spring each year.

Freshwater

Enjoying the sights of the South West recently, Kjell Hensen spied this rainbow trout at Lefroy. 🤩🙌

Come and help release thousands of rainbow and brown trout into Drakesbrook Weir! Once again, we are partnering with the Shire of Waroona to host the fifth annual Troutfest community fish stocking event on Saturday, 2 October. Showcasing the South West and Peel regions’ great trout and freshwater fishery, the event will give the community the chance to help release thousands of rainbow and brown trout of various sizes. Find out more about this year's event and how you can hand-release trout here.

Mandurah and surrounds
For Clay Lewis, nothing beats a Sunday well spent catching high-quality species like this dhuie. 😁😁

Mandurah

If you're looking to chase dhufish off Mandurah, click here to read more about the iconic WA species here! Earlier this week, there were reports of big Samson fish at the Mandurah artificial reef, alongside skippy. Herring and tailor are still providing the main catches in the Dawesville Cut, alongside the occasional yellowfin whiting. Most of the beaches around Mandurah are producing tailor, although the size of the fish is only fair. The tailor found along the southern beaches seem to be of better size, with one angler reporting a 50cm catch this week. Bread-and-butter species along the southern stretch of coast have also kept fishers entertained, with herring and whiting among the captures. Black bream to about 750g have been caught in the lower reaches of the Peel-Harvey Estuary.

Secret Harbour / Warnbro / Port Kennedy / Rockingham / Safety Bay

Boat fishers enjoyed sensational weather on Monday and Tuesday, catching dhufish in the 30m to 50m depths off Rockingham. The same depths have had Samson fish on offer for sportfishers chasing the hard-fighting species on jigs. The Rockingham Jetty is producing herring and tailor. Palm Beach is a good spot to try for most species, with squid also on offer. Sand whiting and tailor are being taken from Warnbro Beach and Long Point.
Perth catches
Fishing the shallows less than 1km from the Hillarys shoreline, Lauren Kober landed her first pink snapper last Saturday! Well done, Lauren, that's definitely a catch to remember. 😁🎣👍

Boats

Reef fishers have been catching dhufish, some reportedly up to an impressive 20kg, this week. Among the areas where the dhuies were found include the 70m depths north-west of Rottnest Island and in 20m to 40m off Ocean Reef and Mindarie. Breaksea cod, baldchin groper and queen snapper were picked up in similar areas, while pink snapper continue to be located in big numbers south-west of Rottnest. Giuseppe and Emilio Orifici have been doing well on King George whiting to 50cm and sand whiting to 35cm in 11m to 18m of water off Leighton Beach and Cottesloe. Squid catches are improving along the seagrass meadows off Fremantle. Some nice catches of rock lobster have been picked up during the past fortnight when conditions moderated to the extent that divers, and those on pots, were able to get back out on the water.

Shore based

Tailor continue to be caught early morning and evening at many of the popular coastal haunts including South Beach, North Mole, Leighton Beach, Cottesloe Groyne, Grant Street, Swanbourne Drain and Brighton Beach. Bait fishers have sometimes found the tailor to start running later in the evening, between 8pm and 10pm, which means it may pay to stick it out if there has not been a lot of activity at sunset. Herring remain in good numbers right along the coast. There have been some nice sand and school whiting caught near Singleton Beach and between Ocean Reef and Hillarys. King George whiting and squid are a chance at the Fremantle and Cockburn Sound rock walls. Tailor in the 30cm to 50cm range can be found near baitfish in the lower and middle reaches of the Swan River early morning, around sunset and at the change in tide. Mulloway activity is expected to increase in deeper areas of the Swan including at Narrows Bridge, Freshwater Bay and Mosman Bay as summer draws near. Are you new to fishing?
