G'day <>,

I hope you've been lucky enough to get out for a fish this week or have an angling adventure planned for the weekend!

If you're based in the South West or metro area, be sure to join us at Troutfest tomorrow to hand-release trout into Drakesbrook Weir.

In this week's report, you'll find mad-keen fishers Joachim Azzopardi, Peter Fullarton and John Curtis' notes on what's biting from Broome to Esperance.

Also, Western Angler editor Scott Coghlan has discussed yellowfin tuna in this week's edition of Scott's Species. Read the full Scott's Species series here.

For anyone wanting to contribute to the weekly fishing report, photos reflecting Recfishwest's responsible fish handling practices will be given preference.

Catch of the Week!

Enjoying the long weekend, Broome fisher Simon Coit showed why the Fitzroy River is valued so highly by fishers, landing this monster barramundi! That's definitely a fish to remember, Simon. 😁🤩

East Kimberley
Woahhhhh! Steve Barnett celebrates after becoming the proud owner of a new dinghy. Well done! 😎

The 2021 Apex Kununurra Barra Bash

More than 700 fishers, over 100 barramundi caught and one MAJOR prize won — it's safe to say last weekend's 23rd Apex Kununurra Barra Bash was a great success! A huge congratulations to Steve Barnett, pictured above, who was the lucky fisher to claim the F370 Quintrex Outback Explorer top prize for simply taking part in the Bash. Although fishers had the option to fish anywhere in the East Kimberley, many competitors stayed close to town and tried their luck at Lake Kununurra to try land a 1m-plus barra. Big barra are on offer in the lake thanks to a well-managed stocking program which has seen more than 1 million fish released into the waterway since 2013. Recfishwest was proud to once again support the Bash and sponsor a Lowrance Elite FS 9 with Active Imaging 3-in-1 Transducer for the fisher who caught the biggest barra on the lake across the three days. Well done to Lake Kununurra Barramundi Stocking Group member and avid fisher Curt McCartney for taking out the lake component prize, after landing a whopping 111cm barra. Read the Bash's results here and see what other great prizes were up for grabs in our pre-comp story here.

Almost 130 barra were caught during Barra Bash, including this one by Lizz McCullum on the Lower Ord.

Shhhhh, secret spot!

"Put a saddle on it, because it's a horse". During an adventure to the Dampier Archipelago, Jay Wines scored this saddletail.

Broome catches
The Fitzroy is producing awesome barra fishing at the moment, as shown by guru fisher Wade Clark.

Boats

Billfish enthusiasts have been encountering dozens of black marlin in areas very wide off Broome. Spanish mackerel have been caught on bibbed minnows and rigged garfish trolled in waters closer to shore off Port Smith, Entrance Point and Gantheaume Point. Reef fishing has been productive in 30m to 40m of water where red emperor, Rankin cod, blue lined emperor and saddletail seaperch have been caught in reasonable numbers. Some nice catches of fingermark bream and threadfin salmon have been picked up near The Fingers.

Shore based

Barramundi action has continued to increase within the Fitzroy River where dozens of fish in the 80cm to 1m range were caught this week, as proven by Simon Coit and Wade Clark, both pictured above. Dampier Creek has also been fishing well for barra, with fish caught mostly measuring from 60cm to 90cm. Mangrove jack and estuary cod have also been picked up at Dampier Creek and other nearby creeks. Big schools of baitfish residing at the port have been attracting queenfish and varieties of trevally. Squid have been caught in big numbers at Gantheaume Point, Middle Lagoon and farther along the coast towards the tip of Dampier Peninsula.
Exmouth catches
This queenfish made Este Darin-Cooper's day while fishing the Exmouth Gulf last week. It's just one of many fantastic catches on fly in the Gulf in the past fortnight. 📸 Ningaloo Fly Fishing

Boats

Baitfish numbers are building within Exmouth Gulf and their presence has brought about lots of sailfish to the waters. More sailfish have been encountered off the west side where black, blue and striped marlin are also been caught in reasonable numbers. Queenfish in the 50cm to 1m range can be found near Norwest Reef. Cobia have been spotted near Manta rays within Exmouth Gulf.

Enjoying glassy conditions off Exmouth, Haydyn Jackson reeled in this red emperor on his first drop.

A spearfisher landed a 1.2m cobia not too far from the Exmouth Marina last week. Reef fishers have been doing well on red emperor and golband jobfish wide of the Muiron Islands. Rankin cod have been caught on deep-diving minnows within the Gulf. If you love catching coral trout, read more about the species on our I Love Fishing website.

Youngster James Gill was happy with this spangled emperor while jigging off Coral Bay.

Shore based

The west side accesses have been fishing well for spangled emperor, golden trevally and queenfish. More queenfish have been caught near the tip of Northwest Cape, as well as the lower areas of Exmouth Gulf. Giant herring to an impressive 1.2m have been picked up near the Bay of Rest and Heron Point. Squid continue to be caught in good numbers during an incoming tide at Learmonth Jetty, Exmouth Marina, Bundegi Jetty and Tantabiddi boat launching facility. The town and lower gulf beaches have been providing good catches of yellowfin whiting to 40cm.

Scott’s Species – yellowfin tuna, a wonderful prized pelagic

For many fishers, yellowfin tuna are a great pelagic to target. They taste great and are real speedsters!

Yellowfin tuna are a beautiful looking fish and a constant source of fascination for me, writes Western Angler editor Scott Coghlan in this edition of Scott’s Species. Working birds will often indicate the presence of yellowfin, which can then be seen crashing bait on the surface. If there are no schools working, trolling is a good way to find the fish.

Kalbarri catches

Boats

Reef fishing has been productive in 30m to 50m of water north-west and south-west of Kalbarri. In these areas dhufish to 10kg, red emperor, Rankin cod, spangled emperor, baldchin groper and pink snapper have been caught. More baldchin, coral trout and snapper have been caught on soft plastic and metal jigs in waters not too far out from the edge of the cliffs. Longtail tuna and mack tuna continue to appear near schooling baitfish, however, Spanish mackerel have not been encountered on a regular basis this week.

Shore based

The tailor activity has increased along the beaches with many catching three or four fish in the 40cm to 60cm range each session at Wittecarra Creek, Red Bluff and The Siphon. Bigger tailor, fish to 75cm, were landed at Chinaman's Beach, Oyster Reef and Frustrations. Nice mulloway were caught from the beaches north of the river mouth. Dean Robins, of Kalbarri Sports and Dive, landed a pink snapper at the coastal gorges last week. Baldchin groper and spangled emperor have also been recently caught from the rock platforms. Yellowfin whiting can be targeted along the shallows located in the lower reaches of the Murchison River. Black bream, estuary cod and small mulloway can be found near woody and rocky structure farther upstream.
Geraldton catches

Boats

Pink snapper have continued to be found in 30m to 50m of water near South West Bank and off Coronation and Horrocks. Dhufish have been caught in depths of less than 25m, however, the bigger specimen of about 10kg to 15kg have been found beyond the 30m line. Coral trout and baldchin groper can be targeted along the western edge of Pensioners Bank and near African Reef. Dinghy and kayak fishers have been picking up skippy to 1kg, pike, squid and the odd school mackerel inshore. Want to find out more about fishing Geraldton? Visit our I Love Fishing website.

Shore based

Tailor appeared to be more active along the coast this week following reports of good sessions experienced along many of the popular beaches. The first and second points at Greenough fished well for tailor in the 35cm to 45cm range most mornings and evenings, while also providing catches of herring, pike and dart. Tailor to 50cm were present at West Bank, where mulloway to 1m were also turning up. Drummond's Cove was little hit and miss for tailor, however, there were lots of herring and school whiting there for most of the week. Late afternoons and evenings were good for yellowfin whiting at Pages this week. A customer at Geraldton Sports Centre landed two pink snapper, measuring 87cm and 75cm, at Coronation on Saturday morning. Small pink snapper around the 50cm mark were caught at Coronation on Monday together with Samson fish and tailor.
Lancelin catches
A feed of herring put a smile on Charlie's face while he was fishing at Didie Bay, near Lancelin, with his family and Tailored Treks earlier this week. Hopefully the Dockers will make you smile in 2022, Charlie!

Boats

Boats traveling to the 30m depths have been finding schools of yellowfin tuna, with the occasional big model in the mix. Demersal droppers found the usual mix of species, such as pink snapper and dhufish, coming from depths greater than 35m. Fishers have caught King George whiting around the sand to weed edges in 10m to 15m depths, while dingy fishers have achieved good catches inside the bay. Trolling small lures has been finding resulting in herring along the southern shallows. There is no shortage of snook around the weed beds, too.

Shore based

Lancelin's beach fishing has continued to improve this week and the seaweed has been clearing. There has been reports of mulloway north of Lancelin, alongside greenback tailor around the gutters and reef breaks. The usual spring run of 45cm to 50cm tailor is underway, with fish coming from both north and south of town. Beaches and the Lancelin jetty have fished well for bread-and-butter species this week, including herring and sand whiting.

Protecting the Fitzroy River and its amazing sportfishing

With the Fitzroy River producing high-quality sportfishing this week, with big barramundi caught, we thought it would be worth highlighting why the waterway is valued so highly by Kimberley fishers. Click the image above to watch the YouTube video, produced by group Kimberley - Like Nowhere Else.

Esperance catches

Boats

Dinghy and small boat fishers have been doing well on King George whiting, sand whiting, herring and squid within a mile, or so, of the coast. Samson fish and yellowtail kingfish can be targeted on soft plastic and metal jigs near the islands. Crews who travelled wide of the islands scored nannygai, breaksea cod, queen snapper and harlequin fish.

Shore based

The Esperance Jetty has herring and snook on offer, while the Taylor Street structure has been fishing well for skippy, herring and squid. Salmon have been caught in small numbers along the beaches close to town. Bigger numbers of salmon have been appearing at Dunn Rock, where mulloway and gummy sharks have also been landed. Thomas River and Cape Arid have also been producing catches of mulloway, gummy sharks and salmon. Black bream to 40cm can be targeted on soft plastics at the local lakes.
Great Southern catches
WOOODSY! Nathan Woods was more than happy with this dhuie from a Great Southern secret spot.

Boats

Deepwater enthusiasts who travelled to the edge of the shelf, and beyond, scored hapuka, blue-eye trevalla and grey-banded cod. Reef fishing for dhufish and breaksea cod remains better in waters east and west of Albany, as opposed to areas due south. King George whiting catches have been improving within the inshore areas, while squid and sand whiting remain somewhat hard to find. Small pink snapper have been found near the islands, where Samson fish and yellowtail kingfish have also been located. If you're heading to the Great Southern to wet a line this weekend, find helpful fishing hints here.

Shore based

Surf fishers have been doing well on bread-and-butter species including herring, skippy, sand whiting and tarwhine at many of the local beaches. The main locations producing these species are Middleton Beach, Sand Patch and Cables. Tailor are turning up some mornings and evenings at Nanarup, Bornholm and Mutton Bird. There are still salmon at Reef Beach and Fosters Beach, as well as some of the beaches east of there. Rock fishers have been landing yellowtail kingfish, harlequin fish and pink snapper at the platforms near West Cape Howe and Bremer Bay. The discoloured water within the King and Kalgan rivers is slowly clearing, which should result in increased black bream and mulloway catches.
South West catches
Alanah Marriott joined Trudy Morehouse to chase pink snapper off Busselton last week and was not disappointed! If you're fishing the South West, be sure to tag #recfishwest on social media. 📸😎👍

Boats

Off Bunbury, reef fishing has been productive in 12m to 16m and about 28m of water. These depths have produced pink snapper and the occasional nice dhufish this week. King George whiting have also been found up in bigger numbers and sizes in the usual haunts south of Bunbury. King George whiting continue to be caught in very good numbers in depths starting at 5m off Busselton. Squid are being caught in equally good numbers along the seagrass areas off Eagle Bay, Quindalup and Abbey Beach. Pink snapper were caught along the Four Mile and Eight Mile reefs. Those who fished ground north of Canal Rocks scored dhufish, pink snapper and breaksea cod in 35m to 40m of water.

Shore based

Seaweed deposited along many areas of the coast has made fishing from the beaches rather challenging for land-based anglers north and south of Bunbury. There have been a few tailor caught at Hungry Hollow Beach, as well as at Buffalo and Belvedere. Herring have been caught in fairly good numbers along the coast, especially at the Bunbury fishing jetty where small skippy and squid have also been picked up. Yellowfin whiting are starting to be caught on small stickbaits and miniature poppers within the Leschenault Estuary. For fishers based near Busselton and Dunsborough, tailor have been appearing some mornings and evenings at Moses Rock, Honeycombs, Injidup, Castle Rock and Elmore Road. Mulloway are a chance at the beaches featuring deep gutters close to shore. Yellowfin and school whiting can be targeted along the shallows in front of Quindalup.

Troutfest 2021

Come along to Troutfest – a FREE community event – tomorrow and help hand-release trout into Drakesbrook Weir, near Waroona! Held in partnership with the Shire of Waroona and supported by Alcoa, Troutfest is a day of fun set to give you and the kids the chance to hand-release rainbow and brown trout. This year’s family-friendly event gets underway tomorrow, Saturday, 2 October, from 10am to celebrate the fantastic freshwater fishery in our State’s south. We hope to see you there!

Mandurah and surrounds

Mandurah

Anglers fishing the beaches both north and south of Mandurah have reported occasional catches of big tailor, exceeding 50cm, along with plenty of chopper tailor. Land-based fishers are also catching whiting, tarwhine and herring from the beaches. The Dawesville Cut is still producing plenty of herring of average size, King George whiting and a few yellowfin whiting. Anglers chasing black bream are finding a few fish in the lower reaches of the rivers.

Secret Harbour / Warnbro / Port Kennedy / Rockingham / Safety Bay

When conditions were suitable, boat fishers off Rockingham landed dhufish and breaksea cod in the 60m depths earlier this week. Samson fish were found in the 20m to 30m depths featuring structure, while King George whiting have been found alongside skippy closer to shore. For those fishing from the beach, the coastline near Port Kennedy has been producing whiting and an occasional tailor in the evening. The Point Peron area is fishing well for tailor while there have been plenty of whiting coming from the local bays around the sand patches. Palm Beach has been producing good fishing when weather has permitted, with a variety of whiting and herring landed. This area is also worth a try for a few squid.
Perth catches
Austin Prosser-Brightling was pretty psyched with this mid-60cm tailor from a beach north of Perth. 💪

Boats

The safe and accessible waters of Cockburn Sound produced squid, some with hoods measuring more than 30cm, for small boat and kayak fishers earlier this week. King George whiting are being caught in very good numbers and sizes near The Windmills, as well as in 10m to 20m of water off Cottesloe and in slightly deeper waters off City Beach. Fresh squid seems to be producing the best results on the King George. Dhufish and breaksea cod have been caught in 40m to 60m of water off Fremantle this week, while baldchin groper were, again, mostly picked up in waters north of Hillarys. Packs of small yellowtail kingfish have been patrolling West End and Parker Point. There are schools of tuna varieties in about 30m west of Five Fathom Bank. Squid catches are increasing along the seagrass meadows off Fremantle.

Shore based

Recfishwest’s Sedin Hasanovic scored this 50cm tailor from a north metro beach yesterday morning. 😁

Juvenile salmon in the 40cm to 50cm range have been turning up in big numbers up at some of the rock walls located within Cockburn Sound, including Woodman Point and the Coogee Marina. There have been some nice King George whiting caught from the rocks along Capo D’Orlando Drive, where herring and squid have also been picked up. More herring have been caught from nearby South Mole and North Mole, as well as many of the rock walls and groynes located farther north along the coast. Tailor have been a little hard to come by, however, this may likely be a result of seaweed deposited along the beaches making it difficult to target the popular sportfish. Austin Prosser-Brightling, pictured above, is among fishers in the know who have been finding solid tailor along the northern metro coastline. Read more about how to effectively chase tailor here. School and sand whiting can be targeted at South Beach and Floreat Drain. There are whispers of mulloway being landed near Narrows Bridge and Causeway Bridge.
