G'day <>,

What another great week of fishing across the State! On a personal note, I'm still hung-up on losing what would have been my PB black bream from the Swan River... next time.

In this week's report, you'll find mad-keen fishers Joachim Azzopardi, Peter Fullarton and John Curtis' notes on what's biting from Broome to Esperance.

Western Angler editor Scott Coghlan has discussed a species that are very interesting for many reasons in this week's edition of Scott's Species — ruby snapper. Find the full story below and read the Scott's Species series here.

For anyone wanting to contribute to the weekly fishing report, photos reflecting Recfishwest's responsible fish handling practices will be given preference.

If you know someone who loves fishing and would like to receive the weekly State-wide Fishing Report and our other exclusive communications, let them know they can become a Recfishwest member for just $10 a year.

Tight lines and safe fishing!

Shhhhh, secret spot!
Fishing somewhere in the Pilbara recently, Ryan Johnston flexed his muscles to land this GT. Nice!
Broome catches
Cracker jack! Wade Clark set out for a couple of mangrove jack near Broome and he found them. 😎

Boats

Reef fishing has been productive in 20m to 40m of water off Port Smith, Entrance Point and Gantheaume Point where blue lined emperor, coral trout, saddletail seaperch and Rankin cod have been picked up in fair numbers. Mulloway are starting to be caught in bigger numbers within Roebuck Bay alongside threadfin salmon to 1m, bluenose salmon and fingermark bream. There are still mackerel and tuna being found near the schooling baitfish offshore.

Shore based

Barramundi activity has continued to increase within the Fitzroy River and the local creeks, as the water temperatures in the systems continue to rise. Along the banks of the Fitzroy, barra in the 60cm to 1m range have been caught on lures in areas such as Langi Crossing, Telegraph Pool and Pelican Pool. Smaller barra have been coming from Dampier and Willie creeks where threadfin and bluenose salmon are also being caught. Baitfish residing near Entrance Point are attracting queenfish and trevally to the area.
Exmouth catches
🍔🍔🍔 There isn't a McDonalds anywhere in sight at Exmouth, but that doesn't mean that you can't order a Big Mac! Read hints and tips for fishing off Exmouth here. 📸 On Strike Charters

Boats

Baitfish are continuing to build in numbers within Exmouth Gulf and their presence has brought in lots of sailfish to these waters. Billfish enthusiasts who set out to target sailfish in the Gulf this week had the opportunity to catch multiple fish. More sailfish have been encountered off the west side, however, marlin were a little harder to find. There are still lots of Spanish mackerel being caught on trolled minnows and retrieved stickbaits near the west side reef and the Muiron Islands. Depths of about 40m seem to be holding Rankin cod, coral trout and spangled emperor at the moment, while goldband and jobfish were found between 90m and 110m. Cobia have been appearing off the west side and within the Gulf.

Shore based

Queenfish have been regularly appearing within casting distance near the tip of North West Cape at spots that include Oysters, VLF Bay and Bundegi Beach. More queenfish have been turning up in the lower areas of Exmouth Gulf where giant herring and permit have also recently been caught. Spangled emperor have been landed at many of the west side accesses, while crabs are sometimes enticing bluebone near the lighthouse. Yellowfin whiting remain in very good numbers along the Exmouth and lower Exmouth Gulf beaches. Squid can be targeted at Learmonth Jetty, Bundegi Jetty, Tantabiddi boat launching facility and the marina rock walls, especially during an incoming tide.

Scott’s Species – ruby snapper, a prize from the depths

Electric reels are often used to get ruby snapper up from the depths. 📸 Peak Sportfishing

Looking like a gigantic goldfish, ruby snapper are a common deep water catch in northern WA, writes Western Angler editor Scott Coghlan in the latest edition of Scott’s Species. Ruby snapper are well-known for their great eating qualities, meaning they are a prized catch for bottom fishers in 90m to 400m of water.

Kalbarri catches

Boats

Crews who travelled to the 30m to 50m depths did reasonably well on pink snapper, baldchin groper, Rankin cod, red emperor and spangled emperor this week. More snapper have been caught on baits and jigs in about 15m of water, north and south of the river mouth, alongside baldchin groper and coral trout. Mack and longtail tuna are about the only pelagic species being caught with any consistency.

Shore based

A 90cm tailor landed at Oyster Reef on Sunday was among dozens of smaller tailor caught near the river mouth and at Wittecarra Creek and Red Bluff during the week. Red Bluff has also been producing a few pink snapper, which are also occasionally being picked up at the coastal gorges along with baldchin groper and spangled emperor. Black bream and mulloway can be targeted in the lower and middle reaches of the Murchison River. There are some nice yellowfin whiting being caught along the sand flats, while cobbler of about 50cm were picked up in various parts of the river this week. Bag limits of blue swimmer crabs are sometimes being achieved in the lower parts of the system, while mud crabs are mostly being found in the upper reaches.
Geraldton catches

Boats

Reef fishing has been productive near African Reef and South West Bank where good numbers of dhufish, baldchin groper, pink snapper and sweetlip are regularly being picked up. More snapper have been found in 30m to 50m of water south-west and north-west of the shipping channel. Coral trout and school mackerel have been caught near Pensioners Bank this week, while dinghy and kayak fishers are still finding skippy, herring and squid within the inshore reefs. Head to our 'I Love Fishing' website for more information on fishing the Mid West.

Shore based

Several pink snapper have been caught from the shore between Coronation and Horrocks during the past fortnight. Tailor and mulloway have also been landed along the this stretch, as well as at nearby Drummond's Cove. More tailor have been appearing at Separation Point and Southgates, while the Flat Rocks to Greenough River mouth stretch has been a little hit and miss for the popular surf fish. Yellowfin whiting and school whiting can be targeted along the beaches in front of Geraldton provided there is minimal seaweed. Squid can picked up at the marina and the back of The Lives at night.
Lancelin catches
Tailored Treks' Peter Fullarton with a chunky tailor from the beach near Lancelin earlier this week. 👏

Boats

Water temperatures have started a warming with summer approaching and a lot of pelagic action has moved a lot closer to shore. There has been big bait schools in the 22m depths with numerous species of tuna and bonito providing a fishing bonanza for those who like to chase the pelagics. Most of the pelagic action in this area has been frantic early in the day and slowing by noon. Ahead oft the West Coast demersal fishing closure, which comes into effect Friday, demersal fishers have caught pink snapper in depths of 25m to 35m. Dhufish are coming from the 35m depths, while there are good numbers of sand whiting along the sandy areas in 18m to 22m of water. King George whiting are being caught 10m to 15m, while there have been some good catches of squid inside the bay.

Shore based

Lancelin's beach fishing has been hit-and-miss with the tailor this week. North of town, has been the most productive, however, low tides have slowed the fishing in most areas while seaweed has also been an issue. The reef breaks have produced a handful of bigger tailor to 70cm. Didie Bay has been good for herring, sand whiting and bluespot flathead. North Point has been fishing well for sand whiting and herring alongside the occasional tailor.

Esperance catches

Boats

Dinghy and small boat fishers have been catching King George whiting, sand whiting, herring, skippy and snook within a mile or so of the coast. Samson fish, recently encountered near the first groups of islands, have been responding to a variety of soft plastic and metal jigs. Crews who targeted reef fish near the islands scored lots of queen snapper and sweep while those who ventured wide were rewarded with lots of nannygai to 45cm, breaksea cod and harlequin fish.

Shore based

The Esperance Jetty has been fishing well for big herring and squid, while the Taylor Street Jetty has lots of small skippy and King George whiting on offer. More King George have been coming from Bandy Creek Boat Harbour where flathead, flounder, herring and black bream are also being found. Bigger black bream, some of more than 40cm, have been caught on soft plastic lures and baits at the local lakes. Salmon continue to be caught in their ones and twos at Salmon Beach and Fourth Beach, while big schools remain evident at Roses, Eleven Mile, Fourteen Mile, Dunn Rock, Thomas River and Israelite Bay. Mulloway to 1m and gummy sharks were recently landed at Thomas and Israelite.
Great Southern catches

Boats

King George whiting enthusiasts are achieving their daily possession limits of the popular table fish within the sound and both harbours. Sand whiting have been a little more difficult to find inshore, while squid numbers are increasing, but still require some work in locating in larger quantities. Reef fishing between the 60m and 80m depths off West Cape Howe to Denmark and Cheynes Beach to Bremer Bay have been producing better catches of dhufish, snapper and breaksea cod than the waters south of Albany. The few who managed to travel to the shelf, when conditions permitted, scored hapuka, grey-banded cod and blue-eye trevalla. Find helpful fishing hints and tips for Albany on our 'I Love Fishing' website.

Shore based

Surf fishers have been catching herring at the marina, Emu Point, Cosy Corner, Lowlands, Shelley Beach, Little Beach, Normans and Cheynes Beach. Skippy have become a litter harder to find, however, there are still lots of tarwhine being caught between Shelleys and Denmark. The water clarity within the King and Kalgan rivers is continuing to increase and this has resulted in bigger catches of black bream and mulloway.
South West catches
Bunbury's nearshore snapper activity has remained on fire for James Duncan who caught and released this beauty. If you've got a fishing photo to share, tag #recfishwest on social media. 🎣 😎

Boats

Reef fishers have been doing well on dhufish and pink snapper in about 20m of water off Bunbury, while breaksea cod and baldchin groper seem to be getting picked up out wider. King George whiting are being caught in bigger numbers south of Hungry Hollow, while squid can be picked up in depths of up to 12m where there is seagrass off the South West capital. Get more fishing insight regarding wetting a line off Bunbury here. Farther south, dhufish have been found in depths of 30m to 50m of water between Canal Rocks and Cape Naturaliste. Smaller numbers of dhufish have been picked up off Busselton, where pink snapper and King George whiting are still being caught. Squid can be targeted along the seagrass meadows off Eagle Bay, Quindalup and Siesta Park.

Dusty Miller went looking for whiting off Bunbury this week, but landed this breaksea cod! 📸 Tom Miller

Shore based

Pink snapper have been caught along the beaches north of Bunbury by fishers using drones to get their baits out farther and deeper. Tailor have been appearing some mornings and evenings at Hungry Hollow, Back Beach, Buffalo Beach and Belvedere. Herring and skippy have also been found at Buffalo, Belvedere and Binningup. It's approaching the time of year where yellowfin whiting can be targeted on small stickbaits and poppers within the Leschenault Estuary. Nice black bream have recently been caught within the Collie River, namely along the stretch near Eaton. Farther south towards Dunsborough, tailor have been appearing some mornings and evenings at Moses Rock, Honeycombs, Mitchells, Fish Rock and Elmore Road. Any beach on the west-side of Cape Naturaliste featuring deep gutters close to shore would be worth trying for mulloway, pink snapper and gummy sharks. A consistent stream of burley should get herring around at any of the bays and headlands. Yellowfin and school whiting are starting to become more active along the sand flats in front of Quindalup.

Harley Jarosz battled with this Sambo on a handline at the Busselton Jetty earlier this week... and won! After a quick photo, Harley released the beast to tangle with again one day soon.

Troutfest 2021

Recfishwest Operations Officer Sam Russell releasing one of the ex-broodstock browns at Troutfest.

Despite ominous grey clouds and the threat of rain, fishers’ spirits could not be dampened at Troutfest on Saturday as more than one thousand trout were released into Drakesbrook Weir. About 200 people attended the annual community fish release event to help hand-release rainbow trout and brown trout into the much-loved fishing spot, near Waroona.

And they're off! Thousands of rainbow and brown trout were released at this year's event.

Trout fishing getaways to the Peel, South West and the Great Southern is reported to provide a combined annual stimulus to regional economies of more than $20 million. Held in partnership with the Shire of Waroona and supported by Alcoa, Troutfest celebrates the fantastic freshwater fishery in the State’s south. Read the full story and see the gallery of photos here.

Mandurah and surrounds
The depths off Mandurah produced this dhuie for Ash Mote a couple of weeks ago. Awesome catch!

Mandurah

Sought-after demersals, such as dhufish and pink snapper, have been on the agenda for Mandurah fishers ahead of the annual two-month demersal closure which comes into effect next Friday. Read more about how you can help protect the West Coast Bioregion's prized demersal species here. Land-based fishers along beaches to the south of Mandurah have found herring and tailor this week, while there are reports of a few small mulloway. Preston Beach, White Hills and Tim’s Thicket have all been fishing well for these species, while drone fishers have reported the occasional pink snapper from Preston. Closer to Mandurah, the Dawesville Cut has been producing herring, skippy and tailor — these species are generally being caught at dawn and dusk. The Murray and Serpentine rivers continue to produce good numbers of black bream, with hardbody lures out-fishing baits.

Secret Harbour / Warnbro / Port Kennedy / Rockingham / Safety Bay

Boat fishers have been enjoying good sessions targeting skippy close to shore. Samson fish have also been found in similar areas. For vessel owners who have been punching out wider, when conditions allowed, dhufish and breaksea cod have been on offer. Land-based fishers have been enjoying reasonably sessions this week, with the area's beaches producing whiting, herring and small skippy, alongside the occasional tailor and small mulloway.
Perth catches
Fishing a northern beach last weekend, Courtney Jones landed this 56cm tailor. Read more about how you can target tailor from along the metropolitan coastline on our 'I Love Fishing' website. 😎

Boats

Yellowtail kingfish are being caught on baits and soft plastics near Rottnest Island at areas including Duffield Ridge, Radar Reef and West End. Samson fish have been found in deeper waters of about 90m to 110m where sunken barges and other structures are located. Find more on how to effectively target Sambos here. A consistent stream of burley at Five Fathom Bank should bring about skippy to the boat. The broken ground between the southern windmill and The Stragglers has produced lots of King George whiting in the 40cm to 45cm range this week. The deeper sand holes not too far from this area have been providing some thumping sand whiting to 42cm. Squid can be targeted in the deeper waters as well along the seagrass meadows in less than 10m off Fremantle and within Cockburn Sound.

Nic Naitanui joined Mark LeCras on the water yesterday morning and landed this dhuie! 📸 Tackle HQ

Shore based

Big numbers of squid have turned up close to shore with jigs in a variety of colours, styles and sizes enticing dozens of the tasty cephalopods at spots that include the Coogee Marina rock wall, Woodman Point, South Mole and North Mole. Herring have also been caught at both of the moles, as well as at many of the groynes and other rock walls located along the coast. South Beach has been producing some nice sand whiting and school whiting. Tailor have been a little hit-and-miss, however, some fishers are doing well early morning and in the evening at Leighton Beach, Grant Street Reef, Swanbourne Drain, Floreat Drain and Brighton Beach. River prawns have been working well on black bream near Narrows Bridge and Canning Bridge. Mulloway are worthwhile targeting from the jetties located at Freshwater Bay and Mosman Bay.
