THE WEEKLY FISHING REPORT “IT’S ABOUT THE CATCHING”

MARINA MARCH MADNESS MARCH 5: The last contest of the season is unique. The format has changed over the years depending on ice conditions. If things remain close to what they are now the event will be held at the North Shore. All contestants fish in a spot of their choice in a very large designated area. There are three fishing sets or separate contests as we like to say. Cash prizes awarded for first fish, 1st 2nd 3rd place for each contest in addition to points toward the final grand prize. Weigh in required every two hours. One team member may continue fishing with other member weighing in fish. BFP is a random draw from big fish from each set. That means the BFP winner MAYNOT necessarily be the biggest fish. The goal is to a get a chip in the pot for the draw. THERE WILL BE NO BASKETBALL. Final rules given at check in. It is FUN FUN FUN.ITS MADNESS!! Check in begins at 5:00AM contest runs through approximately 2:30PM event over by 4:00PM

We will be setting up Hockey Nets next week. Make Eleven Mile a stop on your search for skating. Its all about the fishing for most but for others its all about the skating!! Hockey nets are in!

PIC # 7: You can only find these at the 11 Mile Marina Store and maybe something like them at Valley Country Tackle in Aurora. Say hi to Louise.

TROUT: FAIR TO GOOD: The better action continues to be to be points West from Stoll and Rocking Chair to Suckers and Cross Creek. Bigger fish looking to spawn will be showing up in shallow water sandy bottom as we move into March. Look to 3 to 6 feet with a bait presentation ie spawn sacks or night crawler. Other fish not yet in spawn mode in deeper water to 25 feet. You don’t have to go West though to catch. Other spots that see bigger fish are the three islands Deer, Duck and Goose. Work the edges and drop offs close to the islands. The more time you spend exploring your new “secret” spots the better your future success will be. Duck is the hardest access since it’s a longer hike. Less to no pressure…what do you think that might produce??? Can you say bigger fish!!

KOKANEE SALMON: GOOD TO EXCELLENT: Its been a pretty spectacular season. Some say best in a decade. We haven’t pushed it much because the salmon are notorious for being the most finicky fish. One day two days maybe three hot but then not. The season started off strong then the bite slowed up a bit. Plenty of fish not necessarily plenty caught. This is not an easy game. When people see the above pics they come in the shop looking to catch salmon but honestly have no clue what to do not to mention the where to go. No offense but if you have little or no Kokanee experience we would bet against you being successful. To be honest the best way to learn is to hire us or Tightline Outdoors to show you the where’s and how’s. Invest in a lifetime of catching. Limited availability call for reservations now. There should be a few weeks left. Call us at 719-748-0317 to book a trip now. We have been salmon fishing here since the 80’s and know a thing or two that comes with that much experience.

Current spots are channel areas out from Deer, Duck Islands and the North Shore Marina. A jigging machine as we call them is critical to hold them in. We have done great on Kastmasters, Swedish Pimples and Thomas Buoyant. If they won’t hit the spoons try a small crappie jig. For those of us lucky enough to still be in possession of Berkeley sparkle tubes they have been good try a small crappie jig as an alternative. Tip everything with something. We bring the kitchen sink of baits and stinks cause every day is different. Find the right combo cha ching! Anise Fire Gel on the meal or wax worm has worked well for us. As always stop in for the daily updates and specific lure selection. We want you to be successful but for salmon you need to put in the time.

NORTHERN PIKE: FAIR TO GOOD: Good luck finding a waterdog. Success is being had by those that use the right size sucker with the proper presentation. It’s all about presentation and patience. Look to 10 feet of water or less. We have the proper suckers and will show you how to rig them. Other baits include large tube jigs in white or chartreuse, One oz Kastmasters with a bucktail and piece of sucker or an accidental trout bait..you just never know. Stoll and Howbert have been good of late. Mid morning through mid afternoon.

SPECIAL NOTE: 11 Mile Marina is located at the North Shore in Eleven Mile State Park, Lake George Colorado. A CPW Park Pass is required on all vehicles entering the Park.  Any fees for Guide/Outfitter/Rental services do not include Park fees, CO fishing license or gratuities.
