Shhhhh, secret spot

Everyone loves a good pink snapper on the end of their line! Jack managed to land this beauty somewhere in the northern Perth metro region using unweighted baits down the burley trail.

Dolphinfish have got to be one of the prettiest fish in the ocean, and Joshua Dujmovic was mesmerized by the colours on this one he caught out at the FADs!
Broome catches
Broome fisher Jade Relph landed this eye-catching Maori sea perch off the Kimberley town recently.

Boats

There's plenty of talk in town at the moment, as threadfin salmon start to fire up again across the bay. The triple-tail have begun to quiet down, however there's been a few great sessions chasing queenies up to a metre long in the bay. Spanish and grey mackerel have been caught as well. At the usual inshore haunts, there's still barramundi being caught on account of the water still being warm. Out further into the blue water, bluebone and northern mulloway are a regular sight.

Tim Mitchell with a great Spanish mackerel off Broome.

Shore-based

Shore-based fishing has quietened down recently, however, golden trevally have still been caught around Entrance Point using metals and stickbaits. There have been reports of land-based threadfin near some creek mouths, however people in the know have been very secretive about their spots. Bluebone have been on the end of fishing lines recently around Gantheaume point.
Exmouth catches
If you're wondering where the usual fishing report editor Zach Relph is this week, he's decided to trade his keyboard for this cracking cobia! This one was quick to take a soft plastic off Exmouth. Great work, cob!

Boats

Looking for a battle? Stickbaiting for GT's near the Muiron Islands has been the go-to suggestion - look for dirty water to help narrow down the areas to fish. Longnose emperor have been found along broken ground in the Gulf. Cobia and golden trevally have been turning up near the shoals in the Gulf. Exmouth's King Reef has been holding golden trevally too, to find the coordinates, click here! Spanish mackerel have been caught while trolling behind the reef on the west side, with wahoo also reported nearby. Fishers targeting goldband snapper have been relatively successful in 100m of water on the west side.

Lapping Australia's Hayden Paul is stoked with a personal best jobfish from the depths of Exmouth.

Shore-based

West-side of the Cape has been productive with spango's and golden trevally being targeted. Exmouth Gulf is fishing well too, with queenfish up to 6kg taking metals and stickbaits. Further down the Gulf, whiting and mangrove jack have been landed in good numbers. Learmonth jetty has naturally been producing good numbers of squid. The odd permit has been reported in the Gulf as well.

Kalbarri catches

Boats

Pelagic action has been taking off this week with Spanish mackerel and tuna being the most common catches. Out the front of the Sand Patch has been doing well for yellowfin tuna and mackerel, as well as off Red Bluff. Wahoo have also been on the bite in similar areas. Heading northwest of town seems to be the best bet for those looking to find some demersals such as pink snapper and dhufish.

Shore-based

The river system in town has to be the highlight for shore-based fishers this week with plenty of bream being caught. Estuary cod are being encountered on a regular basis, particularly around structures and underneath jetties. Plenty of whiting have also been caught by kids fishing the river alongside a few other bread-and-butter species. Fishers throwing poppers around Red Bluff beach have been doing reasonably well on tailor.
Geraldton catches
Evie from Northern Addicts catching a solid baldchin shore-based at the Abrolhos Islands. Would have pulled some line getting it to the shore, great effort!

Boats

Pelagics on the north side of town have been on the bite with fishers chasing tuna off Greenough river mouth to Drummonds. Yellowfin tuna have been caught, with some reaching the 10kg mark. Spanish mackerel have been turning up as well, taking trolled baits and deep diving minnows around Drummonds and the Abrolhos Islands. Around South West Bank in the 25-40m depths, baldchin and other demersal's have been caught.

Shore-based

Shore-based catches have been relatively similar to last week, however, the squid have been much more prolific and bigger. One fisher managed to land a 3kg squid off the marina rock wall! Tailor have been turning up at Point Moore to Pages beach. Mulloway fishers are still having moderate success along the stretch of coast from Headbutts to the Greenough River mouth. Southgates has been patchy this week, with those persisting being rewarded with herring and tailor.
Lancelin catches

Boats

Deep sea anglers have caught red snapper and queen snapper along with the usual mix of dhufish, baldies, pink snapper and breaksea cod. Within the bay dinghy fishers have been trolling up some skippy, herring, pike and snook to almost a meter on small lures. Squid catches have improved in the bay with some good sized specimens being caught. Lobster potters have had very good results along the nearshore reefs.

Shore-based

There have been plenty of tailor along the beaches - some to 50cm. The evening bite has been relatively short from around sunset till dark, whereas on morning sessions the tailor have bitten well on into the daylight. Offshore winds have made it easy to cast stickbaits and poppers to the reef breaks for larger tailor. Drone fishers have done well dropping baits 200-300m out for pink snapper. Herring, squid and tailor have also been landed in good numbers most evenings from the jetty.

Scott’s Species – red emperor, a fish worthy of the throne

Surprisingly, good reds can be caught in 20m, so you don’t always need to go really wide to find them.

Red emperor are fittingly named, given the species does indeed sit atop the throne for many demersal fishers in the northern half of WA, writes Western Angler editor Scott Coghlan in this edition of Scott’s Species. Catch up with the full story here.

Esperance catches

Boats

A couple of good days saw fishers heading out wide targeting damersals, with large dhufish and nannygai in the 3kg size bracket being landed. Great numbers of breaksea cod have also been reported, while tuna have been found schooling up around Lion Island, Charley Island and Cull Island. Bread-and-butter species such as king George whiting, herring and squid have been prolific around areas with seagrass in the bay.

Shore-based

Thomas River and Poison Creek saw fishers landing plenty of school mulloway. Gummy sharks have been caught at Roses and Munglinup, alongside reports of salmon schools. Salmon have also been spotted at Warrenup and around the beaches near Hopetoun. Around town, squid and bonito have been caught off the Esperance Jetty. The jetty has also been producing plenty of herring, making it a great option families chasing the much-loved south coast species. Casting soft plastics and small hardbody lures around Woody Lake gives you a good chance to land a 40cm-plus bream.
Great Southern catches
Josh, from Tick'er Off Touring, was more than happy with this salmon near Albany last week. 🤩🐟

Boats

Small boats enjoying the inshore fishing off Albany are reporting good fishing for species such as herring, King George whiting and squid. King George Sound and Princess Royal Harbour have both been the better performing squid locations. Queen snapper and breaksea cod have been caught offshore, when conditions have been suitable. East of Albany, around Cheynes, a few boats have been coming back with King George whiting, squid and salmon. Bremer Bay has seen good numbers of herring being caught especially when they're enticed with a bit of burley. There haven't been many reports of tuna just yet, however, if you put in the time in trolling there might be a few around. The Nornalup Inlet has been producing good numbers of King George whiting, skippy and bream.

Shore-based

Fosters has been a great location to target salmon over the past fortnight, with many fishers taking part in the 2022 Salmon Slam achieving their entries here. Reef Beach near Bremer has also been fishing well for salmon, with a school passing in and out over the past week. Farther west, Blue Holes has held quite a few schools of salmon. The Kalgan River in Albany is fishing reasonably well, with bream being the main targeted species. Mermaids Beach and Back Beach near Cheynes has been producing plenty of salmon and herring for families and those staying at the caravan park.

A quick trip down south to Back Beach resulted in a few salmon for myself and others last weekend. The Moonsoon Breaker seemed to be lure of choice that weekend!

South West catches
Trudy Morehouse, aka the Squid Queen, living up to her name! With this kraken caught off Busselton, she's managed to catch plenty of squid this trip. Fantastic!

Boats

In the 25-30m depths off Bunbury, good catches of pinkies and dhufish have been reported. Burleying up in close has resulted in herring being caught. A few squid have been taking jigs around town however, most of the action has been happening off Busselton in 8-10 metres of water if you want your feed of cephalopods. Pink snapper have also been reported at the 4 mile mark off Busselton alongside skippy and herring.

Shore-based

Buffaloo and Belvedere Beach have been producing tailor in the late afternoons and a few of the elusive mulloway late into the night. Interestingly, the floodgates have had a few salmon trout being spotted and landed alongside the normal bread-and-butter species such as herring and skippy. Stacks of herring have been caught off Forrest Beach, Dalyellup Beach and Stirling Beach. Photos of salmon being caught around Smith's Beach have surfaced, however, they're most likely residential fish. Salmon schools have been reported west of Walpole, so expect to see a few schools starting make their way around the South West.
Mandurah and surrounds
Mandurah tarpon on a micro jig, not something you hear about everyday! Michael Hill scored this 61cm fish, putting up one of his hardest fight's on the light tackle gear. Epic!

Tackle World Miami customers have been reporting good numbers of larger baldchin groper and dhufish in recent times. A few pelagics have been sticking around with bluefin tuna being targeted mostly. Even though there's been a bit of rain, blue swimmer crabs have still been caught in the Peel area. The estuary itself has been great for tailor, skippy and juvenile salmon. The beaches have started to see bigger tailor and mulloway, with the mulloway starting to crack the one metre mark. The afternoon tides and expected easterlies on Friday should hopefully see a few people landing tailor on lures. Whiting and skippy are being caught in the mornings off the beach as well.
Perth catches
Ben Jarlett couldn't believe his luck after he landed this metro mackie off Two Rocks recently! 🔥😎

Boats

An unweighted scaly mackerel on a two-hook snell rig proved to be the winning formula for Ben Jarlett when he was fishing off Two Rocks recently... but it wasn't for the species he was chasing! While targeting pink snapper at one of his spots, line started peeling off Ben's reel at a rate of knots. "The fish gave a couple of blistering runs," Ben told Recfishwest. "It took me about 25 minutes to eventually land and we were very lucky to land it. "The bottom hook had been snipped off in the fish's mouth and the top hook promptly fell out once the fish was landed. "We were targeting pinkies, but were very happy with the Spanish mackerel bycatch."

Folks from Tackle West have reported that squid fishing has been quite productive when the water has been clear, especially on the Southern side of the safe-and-accessible Cockburn Sound. Near the inshore reefs tailor have been taking metals and stickbait's in their usual aggressive fashion. Dolphinfish have been turning up around the FADs #5 and the Compleat Angler FAD. To find out more about the FADs program click here.

The nearshore waters off Fremantle resulted in this surprise harlequin fish for young gun Tom Corrie.

Shore-based

Perth has been seeing a surge of tailor being caught around the city from the beaches to the river. The stretch of river between South Perth and Salter Point has seen plenty of chopper tailor schooling up and hitting bait schools. Black bream have been battling the light-gear fishers around Bayswater bridge and near the Wetland jetty. The rock walls such as North and South Mole, Mindarie and Two Rocks have been producing plenty of tailor, which are being caught on floating rigs. Tailor have also been caught off beaches around Trigg, Swanbourne Drain, Jindalee, Alkimos and Quinns Rock. Herring have been in good numbers on beaches between Two Rocks and Burns Beach.
