Hi <>,

Last Saturday night, I was lucky enough to get into some shore-based fishing off the north metro beaches with the weather being absolutely mint.

I managed to get a few bread and butter species such as whiting and herring and as night set in, I sent a few big baits out for something a bit more exciting... caught nothing, standard procedure.

Hopefully I can head out again this weekend and try to land myself a nice pinkie off the shore 🤞

For anyone wanting to contribute to the weekly fishing report, photos reflecting Recfishwest's responsible fish handling practices will be given preference.

If you're fishing this weekend, good luck and stay safe!

Broome catches
He may have had red emperor on his mind, but Chris Cole was still elated with this blue lined emperor somewhere off the West Kimberley coast last weekend.

Boats

The Broome Fishing Club is set to hold its annual Thready Shootout this Saturday and Sunday. Visit the club's website here for more information. Although much of the local Broome fishers' attention is set to be focused on threadies this weekend, more sailfish are being encountered off Barred Creek, near The Peanut and farther north towards the Dampier Peninsula. Spanish mackerel have been caught in many locations off Broome, as have longtail tuna and mack tuna. Reef fishers are reporting red emperor, saddletail snapper and blue lined emperor in 30m to 50m of water.

There's plenty of longtail tuna schools to be found at the moment, as shown by Jack Furzer.

Shore-based

Bluenose salmon are taking small metal slices along most of Cable Beach, while the new Broome jetty is fishing well for small queenfish and trevally species. Barramundi are occasionally being caught within Roebuck Bay, as well as within the local creeks and of course the mighty Fitzroy River. Read more about fishing Broome on our I Love Fishing website.
Exmouth catches
BOOM! Chris Webster was more than happy with this eye-catching red emperor off Exmouth. 😎 🔥

Boats

GTs have been hooked along the back of the reef on the west-side this week, but some fishers haven't been too lucky when it comes to landing the powerful fish. As always, Spanish mackerel have also been caught beyond the reef by fishers launching from Tantabiddi, while small boat fishers are reporting spangled emperor taking small stickbaits within the lagoon. Shoals in the Gulf are holding golden trevally and cobia, while the same species can also be caught at Exmouth's King Reef. Want the coordinates so you can fish King Reef? Click here. Game fishers are still landing sailfish and small black marlin beyond the 100m line.

Billfish research!

Dr Sean Tracey, a senior researcher at the University of Tasmania's Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies, is back in Exmouth to research Indian Ocean billfish and their movements. Fishing with Eddy Lawler and the Peak Sportfishing crew, the research is part of the Finding Large Oceanic Pelagic Predators Environmental Distribution (FLOPPED) project — led by IFREMER: French Institute for Ocean Science — to investigate the reproduction zones of five billfish species in the Indian Ocean. "This is a great example of an international research collaboration to better understand Indian Ocean spawning areas for billfish," Dr Tracey told Recfishwest earlier this year. "There hasn't been a lot of data collection like this through satellite-tracking off WA before, so it's pretty exciting." Billfish tagging has also taken place off the coast of Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Mauritius as part of the project with the research playing an important role in helping ensure stocks are protected, forever.

Shore-based

Spangled emperor have been caught on baits and soft plastics north of Tantabiddi this week. Mildura Wreck and spots near the lighthouse seem to be fishing well for the elusive land-based bluebone. Golden trevally and small GTs are common along the west coast accesses. There are still plenty of squid being picked up at the marina and Learmonth Jetty. The marina is also producing solid mangrove jack during the evening, with reports of fish 45cm and beyond.

Kalbarri catches

Boats

Fishers heading south of town have been fishing for pelagics. Most have been trolling around for Spanish mackerel adjacent of Wagoe beach. Those targeting demersals have been fishing along the cliffs with spangled emperor and blueline emperor being caught alongside pink snapper.

Shore-based

Kalbarri has been having a great run of good fishing opportunities around the Murchison river lately. Bigger model mulloway have been caught around the river mouth and sand spit with the smaller sized silver ghosts moving further up the river. Some solid estuary cod have been landed by fishers near good structure and whiting have finally started making a comeback as the water starts to clear up. Red Bluff beach has been producing mulloway, the odd snapper and tailor. Wagoe beach has also been producing mulloway, and those droning baits might be in with a chance of landing a land-based Spanish mackerel.
Geraldton catches
Rocking the Pit Viper sunglasses for ultimate fishing vision, Justin Arnold scored this solid yellowtail kingfish while fishing with Blue Lightning Fishing Charters at the Abrolhos Islands recently. 😎😎

Boats

Boat fishers have been having some great success off Geraldton, with those targeting demersals landing pinkies and dhufish in the deeper waters south of town. The Abrolhos Islands were the highlight spot for Geraldton fishers last week with plenty of pelagics early in the week including yellowtail kingfish, Spanish mackerel and yellowfin tuna. Coral trout and baldchin have been caught as well around the islands over the past week.

Shore-based

The stretch of coast around the mid-west has been producing some incredible shore-based fishing opportunities, with fishers catching trophy sized silver ghosts and some solid tailor. Five Mile, Seven Mile and Lucy's Beach have been some of the spots holding these fish, however, sharks have been quite thick in these areas as well. Stick-baiting around Flat Rocks Beach has resulted in some great tailor action for those looking to find themselves some fun on the light gear.

BIG 🐴. Austin Prosser-Brightling with this slab of mulloway, caught somewhere in the mid-west.

Off the marina in Geraldton, squid have been firing with good numbers around the 2kg mark. Fishers have been seeing results when casting squid jigs over the seagrass beds over the north side of the marina. There's been a lot of stir in the water and strong surges making fishing for bread-and-butter species quite difficult with whiting and herring being quite patchy. Mulloway around the beaches north and south of Geraldton have been caught however, many fishers who caught large mulloway have also returned plenty of soapies taking baits meant for the larger models.
Lancelin catches
A nice surprise for angler Lee Hannam while fishing in 6m of water, and on a Alvey bait caster to top it off, fantastic work!

Boats

Boats heading out wide chasing demersal species were giving varying reports, some finding the fishing slow, others doing very well mostly fishing 30-35m depths. Smaller boats fishing in the shallows were rewarded with dhufish caught inside the white bank and pink snapper captures have been common along the inshore reef systems. Water temperatures have dropped a few degrees, even so, some great mackerel were caught over the weekend trolling in the 15-20m depths. Schools of tuna are becoming more common through the depth ranges. Those looking to chase some squid did very well in the bay as well.

Shore-based

Tailor have been very patchy, seemingly either you're onto them or there are none! A few mulloway were caught from undisclosed locations along the region's beaches. Drone fishers are still doing well on pink snapper though however, the larger models have been harder to catch. Within the bays confines, Edwards island point has been a great place to cast small lures for herring. There has been an increase of yellowfin whiting in the shallows and along the shoreline. Lancelin jetty produced some good catches of squid, herring and tailor, even yellowfin whiting schooling in the shallows under the lights.

Scott’s Species – cobia, an enigmatic and powerful sportfish

Often found cruising alongside sharks or manta rays, cobia are a formidable opponent for anglers! 😬

When hooked, cobia are capable of very long and powerful runs, but they will also often come in quite quickly, leading the angler to think the battle is won, writes Western Angler editor Scott Coghlan. However, they invariably get a strong second wind at that point and it pays to exercise caution when using the gaff, as they are incredibly strong fish and often have a fair bit of fight let when they are landed. Read the full story on our website.

Esperance catches
Esperance young gun Tyson 'TNT' Tietjens had a great session working soft plastics for black bream. 🙌

Boats

Wild westerlies exceeding 25 knots have kept most fishers at home this week. For small boat fishers staying inside the bay, King George whiting, herring, sand whiting, skippy and squid have been caught. When conditions are suitable, expect yellowtail kingfish to be found near the islands. Nannygai, breaksea cod, queen snapper and harlequin fish are all a chance out wide once boat fishers are able to safely venture offshore.

Shore-based

The Esperance Jetty has been fishing well for bread-and-butter options including herring and squid, while the odd bonito has also been on offer. King George whiting to 35cm can be targeted at Bandy Creek Boat Harbour. Salmon Slam 2022 fishers were reporting salmon at Salmon Beach, Fourth Beach, Eleven Mile, Roses, and near Poison Creek during the week. The Taylor Street Jetty has decent herring and skippy to chase.
Great Southern catches
The long-weekend saw wonderful fishing for Josh Mayo, with this harlequin fish among the catches.

Boats

Harlequin fish, queen snapper and breaksea cod have been caught in anywhere from 25m of water to 50m of water off Albany this week. For those fishing the near-shore locations, King George Sound, Oyster Harbour and Princess Royal Harbour are all holding plenty of squid. King George Sound, as the name suggests, is producing King George whiting. The FADs deployed off Albany as part of the State-wide FADs trial program are likely to still be holding dolphinfish and tuna varieties, when conditions are suitable. Click here to find the coordinates. When the weather allows a safe journey to the Continental Shelf, expect hapuka and blue-eye trevalla to be caught from the depths.

Southern Ocean Spectacular

If you’re a south coast fisher, be sure to take part in the Southern Ocean Spectacular next weekend. The Albany Boating and Fishing Club is hosting the comp and inviting fishers to take part and wet a line next Saturday, 7 May. With many great species to be targeted, the Southern Ocean Spectacular definitely highlights the importance of fishing to the south coast community. Fishing tournaments such as the Spectacular play a major role in the recfishing community calendar, providing a great social and economic benefit to regional towns across WA. Find out more information here.

Shore-based

Lowlands has been one of the Great Southern hot-spots for salmon this week, with fishers keeping the sand between their toes and chasing the iconic southern sportfish in the Salmon Slam. Likewise, Shelley Beach has also had plenty of salmon schools on offer, while the coast near Bremer Bay has also been delivering the goods. Don't discount Cheynes Beach either, with schools likely to be nearby. The King and Kalgan systems are holding black bream, however, many of the fish reportedly caught this week have not exceeded 32cm. Yellowfin whiting are still dominating most of the land-based catches in the Wilson Inlet.

Jane Ma submitted her catch into the Slam via the app for a chance to win the many prizes on offer.
South West catches
More salmon schools are being found near Dunsborough, with Nikki How showing us how it's done!

Boats

Australind kayakers and small boat fishers are still reporting plenty of school-sized mulloway between the stretch of the Collie River from Eastwell Boat Ramp to Collie Bridge. Tailor are also schooling in this area, while bream are a chance near the snags. Offshore, Bunbury's 30m to 45m depths are producing the occasional dhufish and breaksea cod. Flathead and whiting are a chance off Bunbury in the sandy areas adjacent to the shipping channel, while Bunbury Artificial Reef is holding Samson fish and skippy. There've been good reports at the southern end off Bouvards Reef with baldchin groper caught. Farther south, decent dhufish to 12kg have been caught off Cape Naturaliste on a variety of jigs this week. Pink snapper have also been caught relatively close to shore off  Gracetown.

Shore-based

South West fishers competing in the 2022 Salmon Slam made the most of the awesome sportfishing last weekend, with schools found at many beaches across the region from Yeagarup to Busselton. Bunker Bay and Eagle Bay were among the better performing locations, while there were murmurings of a small school near Stratham, just south of Bunbury. While the salmon action hasn't seemed to have reached Bunbury and beaches farther north yet, locations to the north and south of the South West capital are producing great fish including mulloway in the evening. Avid fisher Scott "Chooky" Fowler took Frank Fimmano and Joseph Versaci for a night session at one of his secret spots between Binningup and Myalup last Sunday night, putting the lads onto plenty of quality fish. This stretch of coast is fishing very well for bread-and-butter species during the day, with herring and whiting reported, while mulloway and the occasional pink snapper are a chance from the gutters after dark.

Mark from MXT OUT on YouTube scored this pink snapper at Hamelin Bay, measuring in at an impressive 77cm.
Mandurah and surrounds

Boats

Recent weather conditions have given snapper fishers a good run, with a few big ones being caught. Interestingly, a yellowfin tuna has been caught off Five Fathom Bank alongside the usual King George whiting and odd dhufish. A few boat fishers have come across larger sized salmon south of Mandurah.

Salmon are coming closer!

With salmon getting closer and closer to the metro area, now is a great opportunity for fishers looking to enter into the Salmon Slam 2022 competition. It's a free to enter, app-based competition with the potential to win some awesome prizes. With the final phase of the competition kicking off on Sunday, download the app and get into it before salmon run ends! To find out more about this awesome event, click here!

Shore-based

Tims Thicket saw the first salmon catch of the autumn last Sunday, with small schools keeping fishers entertained at the popular fishing beach. Although they've been caught at Tims Thicket and again in metropolitan waters at North Mole, there haven't been reports of big salmon schools along the Rockingham-Mandurah region's beaches yet. Several large salmon have also been caught at the ocean end of The Cut - they have not been huge fish, but respectable catches around the 2 - 3kg mark have been the norm. Anglers fishing at Tims Thicket beaches have also reported a few tailor, herring and good sized whiting. The occasional larger mulloway has also been a feature of Mandurah beaches of late. The beaches to the north have also been producing herring, whiting and tailor, with the evening being the better time to fish for tailor.

Perth catches
Matthew Blackwell's son, Bodie went out to the FADs and caught his first ever dolphinfish, weighing in at 5.2kg on 4kg line. An awesome feat for the young gun, well done!

Boats

Cockburn Sound's safe and accesible waters have plenty of squid on offer at the moment. The metro fish aggregating devices (FADs) deployed as part of the State-wide FADs program are fishing well for dolphinfish and yellowfin tuna. Yellowfin tuna are also sometimes being encountered out wide of Rottnest Island. The 20m to 50m depths south-west of Rottnest Island are seeing pink snapper, dhufish, breaksea cod and baldchin groper caught. More baldchin groper have been caught in depths of about 40m off Hillarys and Mindarie, while many have been finding pink snapper inshore at both areas.

Hillarys Harbour Classic

The Hillarys Yacht Club’s Harbour Classic will be held tomorrow, 30 April, with a score of great fishing prizes up for grabs! Whether you’re chasing dhuies, breaksea cod, pink snapper, Sambos or skippy, there’s plenty of different fishing options to enjoy during the comp. All fishers are welcome to take part, find more info here. This fishing comp showcases the fantastic fishing experiences enjoyed off Hillarys in the Marmion Marine Park, which is truly one of Perth’s best aquatic playgrounds. If you love fishing this north metro location, consider joining Recfishwest’s recreational fishing Sector Advisory Group (SAG) to represent fishers’ views and values throughout Marmion marine park extension process. As many of you will be aware, the McGowan Government has plans to review and extend the Marmion Marine Park on Perth’s doorstep, which has been in place since 1987. That’s why we’re calling on keen fishers to join the SAG. Want to get involved? Click here.

Shore-based

Interestingly, multiple salmon were caught at North Mole last weekend. There hasn't been too many schools found between Bunbury and the metro this autumn thus far, so fishers were quite surprised to come across these schools at North Mole. Bream enthusiasts fishing the upper reaches of the Swan River are reporting specimens to an impressive 38cm, with small hardbody lures and mussel-vibe imitation lures working well. These parts of the Swan are also holding a lot of bartail flathead at the moment, which are taking lures intended for bream. Canning Bridge and the Causeway Bridge are also fishing well for bream. The northern beaches seem to be producing the most tailor, with Yanchep Lagoon holding plenty of the toothy predators, some of which are 50cm-plus.
