G'day <>,

Last weekend I packed the light gear and did a solid walk between Ocean Reef and Burns Beach throwing small metals and stick-baits around the reefs you can find on the beaches in that area.

After scaling a few rocks and tearing my shorts on the reefs, I spotted a dolphin herding a school of herring close to shore. I started ditching the small 15 gram silver twisty and got myself a nice feed of herring. A good way to spend the Saturday afternoon in the metro area, I think.

Did you get out last weekend? If so, what did you catch?

For anyone wanting to contribute to the weekly fishing report, photos reflecting Recfishwest's responsible fish handling practices will be given preference.

If you're heading out this weekend for a fish, I wish you the best and stay safe!

Pic of the Week!

Talk about an epic day out on the water! Shaun Wieffering from the Fishin Wishin Life crew went out to the back of Rottnest and got into a prime fishing session, landing multiple yellowfin tuna on the Richter lure trolling at 6 knots. An awesome capture for the metro area and a fantastic pic to top it off!

Broome catches
Beautiful weather? ✅ Awesome scenery? ✅ Personal best barra for Kat D? ✅ Awesome work!

Boats

With the good weather coming through in the region punters have been able to get out a bit wider and have been having great success on the usual demersal species such as red emperor. Mackerel and tuna captures have increased, with more baitfish in the region making it easier to target the pelagic speedsters. There are still no reports of big sailfish being caught, although expect this to change in coming weeks as more blue water flows in.

Shore-based

Pelagic species are becoming more frequent, with some landbased captures of mackerel being recorded out the front of Barred Creek. A bit more inland, the fishing for barramundi has slowed recently, with smaller sized barra being more common than the increasingly elusive larger models. Dampier creek is still a great option for mudcrabbing, whereas Fingers and Cable Beach have seen good reports of bluenose salmon. Queenfish and trevally are still frequenting the new Broome jetty.
Exmouth catches
Check out the colours! James Alderton decided to hit up Mildura and landed this 68cm spangled emperor. Fantastic work!

Boats

Spanish mackerel have been hitting trolling lures behind the reef on the west side in the 15-20m depths. Different varieties of coral trout have been reported alongside tuskfish to be hiding out near the bombies inside the Exmouth Gulf. Red emperor and Rankin cod have been encountered towards the islands north. Big golden trevally have been caught recently off the Exmouth King Reef - to find the coordinates, click here.

Shore-based

Shore-based fishing around Exmouth has been great recently, with good spangled emperor coming from the access points on the westside at night. The Warroora coastline has been also a great spot for spangos. Reports of queenfish and small trevally have been caught around VLF bay. Yellowfin whiting have been prolific around the bottom of the Gulf. The marina has been fishing well for Mangrove jack and other small pelagics.

Kalbarri catches
A little further north, Prototype Fishing has been catching some gorgeous grass emperor in Denham, Shark Bay. Great pic, mate!

Boats

Spanish mackerel have been taking combinations of lures and rigged baits to the north and south of town, with the most successful spot being just off Red Bluff. A combination of good weather and fishing conditions allowed fishers to target a range of different species. This included varieties of tuna being the highlight north of town. Out wide, pink snapper have been caught and they've been great sizes.

Shore-based

Mulloway in the river have started to slow down compared to last month, but the fish that were caught this week have been much more impressive. One lucky fisher landed a mulloway just under 1.3m earlier in the week, approaching the 20kg mark. The river mouth and marina jetty are both worthy spots to check out if you're looking to chase the silver ghosts. Bream and whiting are still in good numbers along the banks of the river, too. Tailor have been caught from Wittecarra Creek to Red Bluff - the size has been down however. Storm gardies are starting to be caught around Red Bluff as well.
Geraldton catches

Boats

Fishing has slowed a little due to the recent wet weather coming through Geraldton. Inshore waters are still a little dirty, however, squid fishing off tinnies and kayaks close to town has still been great! A couple of boat fishers have had success around African Reef catching a few Spanish mackerel and those who managed to get close to the reef were rewarded with a nice few demersals. The fishers who hit up the shallower waters north of town instead got into a great pinkie session.

Shore-based

Similar to last week, weather has been a big factor in where you can and can't fish. Seaweed has been moving around a lot, and the surge has made it difficult to keep a bait in place. With the addition of the wet weather, only the most keen ventured further north to Coronations and Horrocks where the water was little bit clearer. Those who did, however, were rewarded for their efforts with tailor and mulloway.
Lancelin catches
Finn Parr went out with Jayson Spencer a little further north to get into some good fishing grounds. He managed to pull in this great dhufish!  📷 Jayson Spencer

Boats

Calm seas saw some great catches over the weekend, demersal species were on the bite with boats reporting incredible fishing sessions in the 20’s and 30’s. Dhufish and baldchin groper were the most popular in terms of what was caught. Schools of blue mackerel have been widespread north of town, mostly 15-20m where Spanish mackerel were shadowing the schools. Smaller boats fishing inside the bay found an increase in size and numbers of skippy along with plenty of herring and squid.

Shore-based

Yellowfin whiting and herring were caught along the shore of the bay, while surf beaches have been holding some good sized sand whiting. Casting larger baits hasn’t been overly productive for tailor, however the odd mulloway or pink snapper has made the fishing sessions worth it. Drone fishers have been doing well on the pink snapper, and results are likely to improve further on the passing of the current front.

DANGEROUS ROCK FISHING WARNING!

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast 6-8 metre swells developing about the South West Capes on Thursday afternoon, extending to Geraldton and Walpole by midnight Thursday and to Shark Bay and Bremer Bay during Friday morning.

A south-westerly swell of 6-7 metres will extend along the south coast to Israelite Bay during Saturday. Don’t put your life on the line by attempting rock fishing over the next couple of days!

Conditions will ease along the west coast and parts of the south coast, west of Walpole, but swell will still potentially remain at hazardous levels in this time. If you’re planning a fishing trip in this area on the weekend, we strongly advise you to take all precautions. For tips on staying safe visit https://fishandsurvive.com.au/

Esperance catches

Boats

Typical autumn weather of low swell and low winds has made for very favourable fishing conditions. For those making the most of the idyllic weather and heading out wide, dense schools of nannygai have been encountered. These schools have been found in depths ranging between 30-120m, with fish up to 60cm being landed. Big harlequin fish have been caught inshore in 8-10m of water. Impressive numbers of quality breaksea cod have been caught along the rocky bommies in 30-40m of  waters. Large squid, with hoods measuring in the mid 40’s, along with plump herring and garfish have been caught in respectable numbers at the Esperance Jetty.

Shore-based

Most of the fishers in Esperance have been hitting up the beaches west of town, reporting better fishing compared to the east. 14 Mile Beach has been the highlight for land-based fishers, as a few mulloway have been caught in the gutters. Munglinup Beach has been the spot for gummy sharks, with specimens up to 18kg being landed in the last week. Salmon have been continued to be a regular catch, with multiple schools still cruising along this stretch of coastline.
Great Southern catches

Boats

The recent weather has turned it on for the region with some glass off days allowing fishers to push out wide and access deeper waters. Those who have ventured out have been rewarded with the usual captures of breaksea cod and nannygai, with deep droppers fishing the shelf capturing some good hapuka. There have been reports of some anglers hooking up to dolphinfish on the Albany FADs - If you would like to try your luck at landing one of these magnificent sportfish, find the Albany FAD Coordinates here!

Shore-based

Salmon fishing has begun to slow in the region, with reports of salmon schools becoming less frequent. However, don’t let this deter you as there are still plenty of captures being recorded throughout the great southern as of late. Popular spots such as Shelleys and Cheynes Beach are always a worthwhile bet. Rock fishers have had a great week with captures of yellowtail kingfish being recorded from throughout the region. River fishing has slowed with little reports on bream and mulloway captures.
South West catches
A south west inshore session for a couple of Samson fish is a good treat for the boys, Todd Cristaldi had a good time with Wade catching a few of these brutes.

Boats

Geographe bay has been fishing well for squid, and with the wild weather happening, pink snapper are expected to start firing. Good numbers of dhufish have been caught off the Capes past the 40m mark. Meanwhile, Bunbury has been fishing well for King George whiting, with the most productive grounds being found in water depths of 20m.

Wade himself, pulling in a solid Sambo on the jigs.

Shore-based

There have been rumours of pink snapper caught from the beaches north of Bunbury recently, such as Buffalo and Belvedere Beach. With the incoming weather, these rumours are likely to be proven true as the pinkies push further inshore. Salmon have been caught in good numbers around most of the usual haunts, with fish being caught from Hamelin Bay through to Eagle Bay. Busselton jetty is producing great numbers of squid and the herring caught have been large and plentiful!
Mandurah and surrounds

Mandurah

Herring and some very large salmon have been landed from the southern beaches along with a few mulloway. There are a few tarwhine, skippy and tailor being caught at the ocean end of The Cut. At the estuary end there are still herring, whiting and an occasional salmon. Beaches north of the town are fishing well for herring and whiting, in the morning. Tailor are being caught during the late afternoon and evening. In the Murray and Serpentine rivers bream are a little more active. Fishers chasing prawns are starting to read the tide tables and working the outgoing tide from moored dinghies. During the day there have been a few herring, yellowtail and tailor being taken from the estuary.

Secret Harbour / Port Kennedy / Rockingham / Safety Bay

People fishing throughout this area have reported good catches of herring and some squid. Small boat anglers fishing in front of the jetties at Rockingham have been catching some King George whiting, squid and snook over the weed banks. Those fishing Becher Point and Point Peron beaches have been catching salmon and tailor. There have been some larger salmon to 5kg being landed as well.
Perth catches
🏆-sized metro kingy! Joel Borgers got out last week to chase some yellowtail kingfish on some nice ground North of the River where he'd seen a few larger models before. Guess they were still there!

Boats

Last weekend saw some absolutely stunning weather conditions for boaties allowing people to target a variety of species around the metro area. Those who went out off Two Rocks had great success with pink snapper in close. Between Mindarie and Two Rocks, a few kayakers got into some nice herring and chopper tailor 1-3km offshore. They've also had some fun sessions paddling out to a few seagrass beds off Mullaloo and Whitfords for squid. Dhufish have been encountered in 30-40m depths, and in similar depths, fishers have gotten into some great pelagic action chasing the yellowfin tuna attacking the bait schools. Baldchin have been quite prolific around the metro area as of late, with more captures than usual.

Shore-based

The calm before the major storm coming through Perth this weekend had many land-based fishers catching pink snapper from the shore. Malcolm Johnson has been doing well on the pinkies and has also managed to land a few just a few days ago. This is testament to the fact that you don’t need to brave the wild weather to be in with a chance for a solid fish.

It's been a big week for Malcolm Johnson with him chasing pink snapper land-based around the metro beaches and was delighted to get this solid one. Great work, mate!

Tailor in the 40-50cm size bracket have been turning up at night taking baits on gang hooks north of the river. Those chasing tailor on lures have been having success on the beaches further north around Two Rocks, with schools of the toothy critters providing great action on the light gear. Similar to last week, a few mulloway have been reported in the Swan and Canning rivers, however, they've been on the smaller side. Reports of salmon around City Beach and Woodman Point have been confirmed, though the larger schools are yet to be seen.
