G'day <>,

It's finished! The Salmon Slam 2022 competition has wrapped up and some awesome prizes will be sent out to the winners!

Sponsored by Shimano and Western Angler magazine, the Salmon Slam - part of the Awesome Autumn of Salmon - celebrates salmon as a fastastic, safe and accessible sportfish.

Although the La Niña weather event has led to warmer water temperatures limiting the run of the highly popular species, there were still a few salmon caught from the Mandurah and Perth coast.

For anyone wanting to contribute to the weekly fishing report, photos reflecting Recfishwest's responsible fish handling practices will be given preference.

If you're heading out this weekend for a fish, I wish you the best and stay safe!

Pic of the Week!

A personal best for Broome local, Celeste McDonald-Holland. The Maori seaperch are just one of those fish that don't often come up in our fishing report but they're always a welcome surprise. An awesome pic to go with it too!

Boats

It's been a great week for Broome fishers with a variety of species being caught! Bluebone have been caught in big numbers in the Bay with people fishing their honey holes. Sailfish are back with heaps of Spanish mackerel to go along with them. The odd threadfin salmon has been taking line, however, targeting them has been a little difficult. A few big fingermark have been found around reefs and northern mulloway have also been found on similar grounds.

Shore-based

Queenfish, trevally and blue nose salmon have been caught, with the salmon being around 1-3kg. The most popular spot has been all along Cable Beach. Gantheaume Point has also been quite nice when the tides high allowing for queenfish and trevally to be targeted. The rocks to the south have been holding bream, trevally and queenfish on an incoming tide. Small hard body lures work well on the bream as they move into structure with the incoming tide. Queenfish and trevally can often be seen smashing bait schools - poppers and soft plastics work well here.
Exmouth catches
Dylan Cooper caught this Spanish mackie off the coast of Exmouth, check out some of the awesome footage they got here!

Boats

Billfish enthusiasts have been landing marlin not too far out from the back of the reef near Tantabiddi. Sailfish are sometimes being encountered in similar areas, together with a few wahoo in the mix. Spanish mackerel have been responding to rigged whole baits and minnows trolled along the back of the reef line. Poppers and stickbaits have been working well on spangled emperor within the west coast lagoon.

Shore-based

Spangled emperor have been caught on bait and lures along the west coast, particularly between Tantabiddi and the lighthouse. Queenfish and small golden trevally have also been common along the west coast. Oyster Stacks would be worth trying for bigger giant trevally, as well as queenfish. Squid can be targeted at Bundegi Jetty, the marina and Learmonth Jetty. There are still plenty of yellowfin whiting at the town beaches and towards the lower reaches of Exmouth Gulf.

Kalbarri catches

Boats

There's been some fantastic weather lately allowing for some fishers to come back with plenty of good results. Spanish mackerel have been taking trolled lures and rigged garfish off Wagoe and Cliffs mainly, however, fishers have also had success going north as well. The shallows have been great for those looking to target pink snapper. Out wide, the charter operators and bigger boats have been landing dhufish and red emperor.

Shore-based

Wagoe beach has been the highlight for Kalbarri shore-based fishers, with those ballooning landing Spanish mackerel in 15-20kg region and one fisher also landed his first shore-based dhufish off Wagoe. Red Bluff has been great for tailor, longtoms and storm garfish. Wittecarra has been holding good numbers of tailor as well. The Sand Spit has been great for mulloway and whiting, while the river has still been producing great cod and bream.
Geraldton catches

Boats

Boat fishing has been quiet lately with not many reports of fish biting. That being said, a few fishers going out from Coronations to Drummonds have been getting a few demersal fish such as dhufish, baldchin and pink snapper, however, it has been hard-going and not much action. Hopefully with the good weather reported, a few more fish will start to be landed

If you're going out this week, make sure to send your best fishing photos and a description to sedin@recfishwest.org.au to potentially be featured!

Shore-based

Squid fishing has managed to stay active with the most action from the north side of the marina. There's been a mix of sizes with a few 35cm hoods being reported as well. Mulloway have been found in between the seaweed at Tarcoola and Southgates, though fishers had to work hard through the night untangling seaweed and line. Tailor have been decidely patchy, with only a few being caught throughout the week, however, a 60cm tailor was caught by a fisher at Greenough River Beach.
Lancelin catches
Viset Pen managed to stay awake through the night and was rewarded with this excellent silver ghost!

Boats

Both recreational and local lobster boats have reported encountering dolphinfish in the 40m depths throughout the week. There have been some cracking dhufish to 15kg landed offshore, along with baldchin groper continuing to making up the bulk of the landings. Trolling lures along the 15m contour has been finding school mackerel. Samson fish have been patrolling the near shore reef systems. Smaller boats and kayaks fishing the bay have been onto skippy, herring, squid and some big blue swimmer crabs.

Shore-based

The new moon period saw a number of mulloway, Samson fish and pink snapper landed from the local beaches. Tailor catches remain very quiet, however, sand whiting have been a reliable staple to find a decent feed and the size of the whiting has significantly increased along the beaches.

Looking for a fishing activity? Winter bream fishing

Picture: Matt Denny with a solid black bream, notice how the lips turn blue, that's how you know you got a good one!
To most of us, winter means crisp, cold mornings, nights by the fire and the electric blanket. Well, to dedicated bream anglers it means the chance to chase that rare 2-kilo plus, trophy blue nose bream; a personal best any bream fisher would love to be able to say they have caught, and it’s not as rare as it sounds. Over the years 2-kilo plus bream during the winter season seem to be far more achievable than the same size in summer.

Esperance catches

Boats

Boats in close have encountered plenty of squid, with plenty being landed and some hoods to 35-40cm. In the same areas, fishers are also reporting good numbers of sand whiting and big snook. Around the islands, snapper and nannygai are readily taking baits and jigs, as long as you’re able to track down the schools. These fish are also being found out wide to the 60m depths, though hungry Samson fish to 15-20kg are often taking the bait before it reaches the bottom. Demersal fishers are reporting plenty of queen snapper, breaksea cod and harlequin fish too, with the occasional gummy shark being landed.

Shore-based

The Esperance Jetty remains the tried-and-true spot for squid and bread and butter species, with plenty of good size squid being landed on the structure over the past week. Fishers are also reporting herring and garfish, particularly when enticed with burley and the trusty float rig. King George whiting and skippy are occasionally being caught from the start of the jetty and surrounding break walls. The local lakes are fishing well, with local bream enthusiasts being rewarded with black bream up to 40cm. Beaches either side of Esperance are holding salmon, though they’re usually scattered rather than in their iconic schools that move up the coast. Plenty of big herring can also be found on the same beaches – try fishing the gutters and next to headlands. Based on what fishers have been catching, Roses and 14 mile are a good option for skippy up to 2kg, whereas Thomas River seems to be the standout for mulloway and gummies.

Boats

An absolute squidding frenzy has been the hot bite of the week, with many reports of squid being caught in close. The key to catching a few has been just trying to find the clearer water and using the right colours. King George whiting have been a similar case where those fishing the sound have searched for clearer water and have been rewarded with a good feed of whiting. One fisher boasted a 55cm King George capture in 8m of water, a solid effort! Two Peoples Bay has been great for bread-and-butter species, however, more interestingly, there's been small schools of pinkies spotted as well. Offshore has been a little quieter lately, nannygai are still being caught but people have needed to go out farther than they usually do. Bluefin tuna are also an option with captures around Bald Head, Eclipse Island and Breaksea Island being not too uncommon. Those running tuna skirts or deeper diving lures have been having the most success.

Shore-based

Albany's great run of squid has also blessed those without access to a boat. The old faithful Whale World rockwall and Goode Beach have been the spots for those wanting to catch a few cephalopods. While the salmon run has started to quieten down, there's been a few residential salmon sticking around if you're still looking to catch one for yourself. Skippy have been great fun for shore-based fishers with captures becoming more and more common. Bream in the King and Kalgan river systems have been harder to pin down with the winter weather, however, their sizes are getting bigger. Your best bet is to fish the tides to try and match their feeding patterns. If you're looking to learn more about fishing for black bream, check out this ilovefishing article here!
South West catches
It’s that time of year ❄️. Pink snapper have been on the bite with these cold fronts. Wade Fennell, managed to grab one himself. Nice work!

Boats

Pink snapper have been caught when anchor-and-burleying in 6m to 18m of water within Geographe Bay from Busselton to Bunbury. More snapper have been caught off the west coast of Cape Naturaliste together with dhufish and breaksea cod. Packs of small yellowtail kingfish have been encountered off Cape Naturaliste, where the bonito have also been active. King George whiting can be found within Geographe Bay, while squid catches are consistent along the seagrass beds off Busselton.

Shore-based

Surf fishers are still catching the odd salmon at spots that include Injidup, Smiths Beach, Bunker Bay and Rocky Point. Herring are still about in excellent numbers along both sides of Cape Naturaliste. There are some nice skippy being caught from some of the headlands situated on the west coast as well as along the bay. Pink snapper are a chance near Abbey Beach boat ramp when the winds are up. Towards Bunbury, there have been reports of mulloway caught along the coast after dark. Bread-and-butter species have been consistent during the day, while the Collie River's bream activity should be increasing.
Mandurah and surrounds

Mandurah

Salmon are still being caught from the beaches around Mandurah along with some good sized tailor. Pilchards are also being encountered from locations south of Mandurah. The ocean end of the Dawesville Cut has been producing a few King George whiting, lots of herring, along with a few skippy. Salmon are still being landed from the Cut and the waters of the estuary. Larger salmon have been caught from the ocean end. There are big herring scattered around most locations through Mandurah and there are plenty of tarwhine and whiting being caught near the river mouth. In the estuary, the bridge is still a spot worth trying. There have been good-sized tailor, herring, skippy and some smallish tarwhine. The Murray and Serpentine rivers have been producing some excellent catches of black bream.

Secret Harbour / Port Kennedy / Rockingham / Safety Bay

Tailor are being caught in this area at the moment with some big fish being reported close to the reefs. Poppers or casting mulies will do the trick. Jetty anglers are catching good numbers of herring in the mornings. The Penguin Island sandbar has been producing some excellent fishing with good catches of flathead and whiting. Long Point, Point Perron and the Rockingham jetties have been producing consistent catches of yellowfin whiting, big herring, chopper tailor, skippy and tarwhine. There have been some large salmon being taken from the beaches and jetties early morning and evening.
Perth catches

Boats

Yellowtail kingfish have been biting off Rottnest Island with a few fishers managing to land a metre-plus sized fish. Pink snapper are still being targeted however, fishers have had to go deeper in the 20-30m depths. Reports of squid biting off the weed beds off Pinnaroo and Whitfords Beach, allowing kayakers to get a quick feed alongside a bit of herring on the small metals. The safe and accessible waters of Cockburn Sound have been good for squid and families who were looking to put their kids onto some bread-and-butter fish such as herring and skippy. Out deeper, Brad Deere went off Two Rocks and landed a 29kg Spanish mackerel in 37 metres of depth.

Brad Deere with super-sized metro mackie caught only two days ago with 150gram deep meat jig.

Shore-based

This past week, weather has been pretty on-and-off, though people have been having success on the tailor around Perth. A couple fishing the mouth of the Yanchep Lagoon had a great time chasing whiting and herring. The Two Rocks marina has been great for tailor on the inside of the rockwall. A local fisher has had some great success fishing off Quinn's Rock, landing herring and skippy. Pink snapper captures have slowed down, with less reports than previous weeks - your best bet is to wait for the next storm or for the swell to pick up again. Salmon have been sticking around south of the river, with captures here and there between the odd tailor and herring. Fishers have been doing well off Woodman Point and Fremantle North and South Mole for salmon as well.
