Pic of the Week!

Callum Dowell wasn't having it until he got himself a stonker on the boat. He was stoked with this blue-lip bream measuring in at 48.5cm and caught on 4lb line. An awesome capture and worthy pic of the week!

Broome catches
A muddy mission 🦀 saw Celeste McDonald-Holland wrangle a few of these feisty nippers. Solid effort!

Boats

Broome has recently seen a surge in sailfish being landed in the 20m depths offshore. Spanish mackerel and a few different types of tuna have also been reported, mostly longtail and yellowfin tuna. Tuna can usually be tracked down by keeping an eye out for the birds which, like the tuna, are feeding on the bait schools. A few threadfin have been caught closer to town, wheras the bluebone have been difficult to track down - looking for clearer water is the main advice for those targeting them.

Shore-based

Mud crabbing has been a great activity for those around town, with the aptly named Crab Creek producing the goods. Willie Creek has also been good for muddies and threadfin. Gantheume Point and Disaster Rock has allowed fishers to catch great reef fish, such as bluebone, when the tides are right. The Town Jetty has had trevally and smaller queenfish on offer lately, and Cable Beach has been producing threadfin on the incoming tide in recent times.
Exmouth catches
Steven Plant's recent trip north saw him land a few bucket list species from Exmouth including this beaut spangled emperor!

Boats

There are still encouraging reports of black marlin and sailfish on the west side within the 200m contour. Red emperor and big coronation trout have been reported in 40-60m of water. The water was dirty last week inside the gulf; although that didn’t stop small boats from finding a variety of trevally and coral trout nonetheless. While on a recent charter, ex-cricketer Dennis Lillee had success landing saddletail and red emperor and even a solid spangled emperor shown below with ease!

Shore-based

West side anglers have been catching spangled emperor to the south of Tantabiddi, casting stickbaits around reefy areas. Sinking stickbaits in the 90-120mm are the preferred option due to the castability and being able to cover ground exceptionally well. Smaller trevally such as brassy and the occasional golden around VLF Bay and Bundegi are ongoing captures.

Kalbarri catches

Boats

Yellowfin tuna are still the focal point and the most talked about species for boaties trolling both north and south of town. Spanish mackerel have been a welcome bycatch with many being caught in the 10-15kg range. Baldchin groper, pink snapper and pearl perch continue to be reported in good quantities as well as coral trout and a 10.5kg red emperor being a standout capture.

Shore-based

The recent strong easterlies gave gas-ballooners an opportunity to send some baits out which resulted in quite a few Spanish mackerel being landed. Bobby Chen holds one such example below. Tailor remain a local constant, with Wittecarra Beach being a good spot to try and land a solid green back. With the impending bad weather due to return over the next few days shore-based anglers can expect changes to beach formations leaving some deep gutters for those willing to chase mulloway, if the seaweed doesn’t thwart such plans.

Geraldton catches
Jennine Sampson had an epic battle landing her first ever baldchin groper caught on a Halco Roosta popper in 1.5m of water at the Abrolhos Islands. Measuring in at 63cm, this would have been an absolute blast to land!

Boats

Geraldton fishing has finally bounced back with some good weather this week. Baldchin groper have been very consistent in the reefy areas north of town. People targeting demersal fish have also reported good numbers of pink snapper and some reports of dhufish from Coronations all the way to African Reef in the 12-24m depths. Dinghy fishers have had great success catching squid and skippy on the south side of Point Moore.

Shore-based

The recent run of mulloway being caught, both north and south of town, has been pretty good. Areas from West Bank to Greenough there has been reported captures of mulloway to a metre, while Coronations saw good numbers of mulloway in the metre-plus category. Tailor have been quite patchy as of late, with inconsistent captures occurring around town. Fishers with lighter gear have noticed skippy taking lures and baits when targeting tailor around Coronations. Squidding around town has also been a great option for fishers looking to get a feed of cephalopods.
Lancelin catches

Boats

There has not been a lot of boating activity through the week, with rough weather the past weekend. A high tide and strong surge made beach launching difficult through the week. When conditions start to improve to allow fishers back on the water, the inshore fishing is likely to produce plenty of pink snapper and baldchin. Squid and herring are also prolific inside the bay as of late, making them a good option for nearshore fishing and small boats.

Shore-based

Tailor have made a resurgence over the new moon period with fish around 50cm caught from local beaches and the jetty. The jetty has also seen yellowfin whiting along the nearshore while squid and herring have been in plentiful numbers late at night. Drone fishers found pink snapper feeding within a few hundred meters of shore in the wake of last weeks storm.

Esperance catches

Boats

Unpleasant weather has been deterring boat owners from venturing too far out, instead, anglers are successfully concentrating their efforts on squid inshore. Red foil and darker coloured squid jigs are usually the preferable options in overcast conditions. Similar areas are likely to be holding plenty of herring and garfish too. With more of the same conditions to come, land-based fishing will be more favourable and a determining factor for next week’s fishing.

Shore-based

The usual bread-and-butter species, such as herring and skippy of up to a kilo, are being reeled in at Taylor Street Jetty and the Esperance Jetty. However, squid is still the main focus with the cooler water and limited alternatives. Wylie Bay is offering King George whiting.  Those who are persevering the poor weather conditions and putting in the hours on the beaches of Alexander Bay are being rewarded with school-size mulloway around the 80cm mark, as well as gummy sharks and small bronze whalers. The local lakes continue to produce black bream with the biggest report being an impressive 43cm.
Great Southern catches
David Parker was rewarded with this "dhuicy" south coast demersal.

Boats

Boat fishing has been relatively quiet lately, the weather has not been playing ball on the south coast. Those who did venture out had success landing the odd dhufish and Samson fish. Most fishers have been focusing on catching squid in close and looking for the clearer water to increase their chances of success. A report of a 23kg dhufish off Albany has been making the rounds around town creating a bit of a buzz.

Shore-based

Fishing shore-based has been very hit-and-miss. The King and Kalgan rivers have been very discoloured and only producing catches of black bream. A few diehard fishers who put up with some fairly average conditions caught salmon at Bornholm, Cosy Corner, Shelley Beach and Bremer Bay. Skippy to 1.5kg have been landed at some of the beaches with nicer grounds. Frenchman Bay is worth a shot if you're looking to chase some King George whiting.
South West catches

Boats

The South West has had a few gaps in the weather allowing fishers to target the usual pink snapper and odd mulloway. When the weather has been ordinary, squid and herring have been popular options, especially in close. Bunbury saw a few captures of small dhufish, skippy and Samson fish. The recent storms will see the pink snapper coming in real close, allowing fishers off Binningup and Bunbury to land a few pinkies.

Shore-based

In between the rainy weather in Augusta, skippy, whiting and squid have been caught at the Colour Patch and Town Jetty. Cobbler have also been on offer around the town. Most of the beaches around Busselton have been quiet due to dirty water and being weeded out. Injinup is the only confirmed spot with captures of tailor and herring. The Busselton Jetty has been producing good numbers of pinkies, squid and the odd mulloway to a metre.

Mandurah and surrounds

Mandurah

The beaches around Mandurah are still producing tailor, herring and pilchards, as well as the occasional gummy shark. The estuary opening and areas adjacent have also been producing good yellowfin whiting. There are still a few black bream on the move in the Murray and Serpentine Rivers. The Dawesville Cut is producing some good catches of King George whiting and some big herring. The bridge is also resulting in some good fish along with an occasional tailor of reasonable size. There are still a few salmon in the estuary and the Cut, and anglers are finding them along the beaches in the area. With the recent rough weather, it may break the schools up a bit and they will scatter widely.

Secret Harbour / Port Kennedy / Rockingham / Safety Bay

Anglers fishing these beaches have been catching a few tailor. There have been some King George whiting and good tarwhine landed also. Palm Beach and Rockingham jetties have been consistently producing plenty herring and pilchards. Squid are still around in good numbers too, with the jetties being prime spots to target them. Salmon are also being caught from the beaches fairly regularly despite being late in the season, with those on the north side of Point Peron really producing during last week.

Boats

When the weather has allowed, many anglers have been doing well inside the sound around Carnac Island on squid, with good quantities in the 25-33cm hood range falling for a variety of jig colours in 4-6m of water. There was also a report of a adult salmon that was hooked on a squid jig in front of the island. Dhufish around the 6-8kg mark have been caught north of Rottnest, with similar sizes being encountered off Mindarie. The inshore snapper fishing is due to get better as more fish push in from the wild weather.

Shore-based

The snapper count continues with more than a dozen pink snapper being reportedly caught off the local beaches and rock walls in the last week alone. Both casting and droning has produced results, with numerous models up to 90cm. As the storms throughout winter continue rolling through on a more regular basis, the sand build up in front of the nearshore reefs will get washed out, leaving deep bodies of water in front, throughout winter. This is prime for anglers wanting to target tailor on lures along the northern beaches in the >2m swells; Jake Rotham (pictured above) had a thrilling session earlier this week. The cooler water temps will also provide great squidding once anglers are given the chance to fish better water clarity.
