G'day <>,

Once work finished on Friday, I made my way to the northern side of Perth to try and land myself a pink snapper. I've been reporting on how great the conditions have been for pink snapper fishing over the past few weeks with multiple fishers landing them from rockwalls and droning, so I thought I'd give it a shot myself.

It was hard-going, moving the rod holder back and fourth, going heavier on the sinkers and trying to get the best cast in just to get the line over the seaweed, but lucky me, I got what I was looking for, measuring in at 82cm, I was pretty happy to say the least!

If you're planning to head out this week, stay safe, take plenty of photos and have fun!

For anyone wanting to contribute to the weekly fishing report, photos reflecting Recfishwest's responsible fish handling practices will be given preference.

Pic of the Week!

Long time Lancelin section contributor, Peter Fullarton, had a ripper session, hooking up to 3 mulloway within 15 minutes of the sun setting. Good to see, Lancelin starting to turn it on, and a stunning sunset! A worthy Pic of the Week!

Shhhh, secret spot!

Big Red! Mitch Ward has been heading out somewhere around the Montebello's and pulled in this solid emperor.
Broome catches
BANG, land-based Spanish mackie on the Halco gold twisty. Jesse Masitto, planned out this capture, casted out the lure as far he could with his 6k Shimano outfit, let it sit for a bit and ripped it in as fast as he could. The Spanish mackerel couldn't resist and this is the result, epic work!

Boats

Dry season fishing is in full swing, with hot days and no wind, making the fishing for sailfish hot! Great reports of sailfish captures are coming in from Broome, with the waters off Barred Creek being one of the spots to try. Fishers from the Broome Fishing Club managed to go 15-8-7, talk about a good day on the water! Reminder, when handing sailfish its always best to leave them in the water when taking a photo. Those who went and targeted the demersals were also well rewarded with some great fishing. Good numbers of red emperor, saddletail and coral trout have been coming in with jigs being the weapon of choice.

Shore-based

The fishing has also been great for those fishing from the land, with one angler Jesse Masitto managing to score two great sized spanish mackerel in one session! The dry season is turning it on for the warmer water pelagics in the area. A variety of species including queenfish, bluebone, mackerel and trevally have been caught on both baits and lures from Gantheaume Point. Similarly, the trevally and queenfish have been active at the town jetty for those who want to have fun on the lighter gear.
Exmouth catches
Big golden lips 💋 Shore-based fishing has been great on the west side, just ask Corren! This golden trevally is just one of the great fighting fish you can target around Exmouth.

Boats

The black marlin have been firing this last week, with plenty of fishers having good runs out to the 150m line raising and landing some good fish. Spanish mackerel have been found in waters from 15-30m, mostly behind the west coast reef with bibbed minnows being the go-to lure to cover more ground.  Out deeper, fishers have been doing well on rubies with the occasional pearl perch still being caught in the 90m depth range.

Shore-based

The west coast accesses have been fishing well for a host of species including spangled emperor, queenfish, golden and brassy trevally. VLF bay has been holding some larger sized queenfish of late. The Exmouth marina continues to provide fun fishing for yellowfin bream and squid on the outer harbour rock wall.

Kalbarri catches

Boats

Fishing around Kalbarri has quietened down a little bit this week. North and south of town saw reports of good sized pink snapper up to 85cm. The clear water and trolling along the cliffs and Wagoe has still been productive for Spanish mackerel, with the fish being bigger than usual but less in quantity. There's been some tuna action out the front of the river mouth with fishers landing them using skirts and stickbaits.

Shore-based

The usual beaches such as Wittecarra and Red Bluff have been fishing well for chopper tailor and interestingly enough, fork-tailed catfish are being caught in relatively high numbers. Big tailor have been caught in the 60-70cm mark at the river mouth while the smaller tailor have been making their way further up the river. Wagoe has been still producing solid Spanish mackerel with ballooning being the best way to target them.
Geraldton catches

Boats

Boat fishing around Geraldton has been a little difficult lately , however, between the bad weather a few fishers managed to make their way out and find some good spots. Earlier in the week, a few guys went out to the shallower waters around African Reef and managed to pull up a few dhufish, the odd coral trout, pink snapper and groper. North of the Marina and along Pensioners Bank, a fisher managed to land a coral trout while trolling, a few smaller sized pink snapper and a dhufish. Along the seagrass beds from Pages to Separations, squid have been plentiful with tubes up to 30cm.

Shore-based

The platform at the north side of the Batavia Marina has had good numbers of pike and squid being caught. Southgates has had a few mulloway being caught in the 1-1.2m mark. Some reasonable tailor have been around the Greenough River mouth. A few keen lure fishers have been targeting the bigger size greenbacks around Separation Point.
Lancelin catches

Boats

Boaters enjoyed some glorious calm days throughout the week, with plenty of whales passing through the depths adding that extra element to a day on the water. Fishers reported dhufish around the 40-45m and baldchin groper through the 30’s. Skippy have been schooling over the reef areas of the mid 20’s, while 20m depths have great numbers and size of sand whiting along with flathead. Schools of slimy mackerel are active between 15-20m depths, spanish and school mackerel can be found feeding on the schools at first light. Within the bay there are plenty of snook, herring, skippy and large numbers of garfish.

Shore-based

The surf beaches are holding some good size sand whiting, several large mulloway were caught around sunset through the week. The bays beaches fished very well for both yellow eye pilch and yellowfin whiting to short casts just behind the wave break. Good size cobbler can be found among many small specimens at night in the shallows of the bay. The jetty has seen some great catches of squid, along with snook, herring and very good-sized tailor.

Scott's Species - Rankin cod, ranking high on the target list

A solid Rankin at the Mackerel Islands for Morris Wilkinson
One of the most striking fish to the eyes of Scott Coghlan, in this weeks edition of Scott's Species, Scott discusses where Rankin cod are found, how to target them effectively and few past experiences with these tough fish.

Esperance catches
Jesse Smithson managed to bring this big 'orse in on an Ocean Legacy Adrenalin pe 4-8. A solid effort, especially for a winter time yellowtail kingfish! 📷 Ben Liddelow

Boats

Esperance has recently had a good run of weather allowing boaties to head out and target a few different species. Inside the bay, there has been good numbers of King George whiting and herring providing some great light-tackle fun for families and kids. Many boat fishers ventured to the islands, and beyond to target nannygai, queen snapper and breaksea cod. Jesse Smithson and few other fishers have caught yellowtail kingfish up to the 20kg mark.

Southern Sports & Tackle is running the "Chase the Kraken" competition from 18th June until 1st of August. With multiple prizes on the line, this weekend is a good chance to get in and compete! To find out more about this event, check out their Facebook page or head into their shop!

Shore-based

The Esperance Jetty has been producing very large squid with hoods up to 45cm. King George whiting are reported to be in good numbers along the Foreshore. Some big "3 metery" flatties have been caught along 10 Mile Beach. Salmon and tailor have been plentiful in front of the first carpark at Fourth Beach. Black bream have been on the bite at Stokes Inlet with a few just barely cracking the 40cm mark. Bandy Creek, interestingly had good numbers of flounder being caught. The cooler waters have brought in the sand whiting around Chapman's Point, Wylie Bay and Dolphin Cove.
Great Southern catches
Cracked the Kraken code 😎 Alesandro Daniele scored this solid squid over the weekend.

Boats

When the weather was playing ball, Albany saw some good fishing action over the weekend. Pink snapper have been quite consistent over the coral grounds. Nannygai have been plentiful around the edge of the shelf. Tuna are around if you put the effort into finding them. King George whiting are around and in good size but are bit hard to find. A few good yellowtail kingfish have been landed as well.

Shore-based

Bremer Bay has been fishing well lately. The local river system has been producing salmon trout. Squid are quite popular with the temps down in the ocean. Beaufort Inlet is filling up nicely and might even break after the next proper rain allowing for some great fishing to be had around the mouth. Swell is starting to drop and with the northernly winds this weekend, Bremer Bay will be a good spot to wet a line. Albany has been great for squid around town. Whiting have been common within the bay alongside some residential salmon.
South West catches
Trudy Morehouse, aka The Squid Queen decided to head out and test some new fishing gear. This solid pinkie would have been an excellent chance to make sure it works all good! Great work!

Boats

When the weather has been good for Bunbury fishers, the 20m-plus depths have been producing all types of target species. Dhufish and pink snapper have been landed in consistent numbers, along with the odd breaksea cod. Samson fish have reportedly been showing up around the augmented parts of Bunbury Artificial Reef, with a few up to 20kg being landed. A few of the reefs off Binningup have been great for pink snapper, herring and the odd residential salmon. Busselton has been prolific with squid and pink snapper in the 10-15m depths.

Shore-based

Augusta has had a good run of bull herring and the odd salmon in the recent week. The very recent northerlies allowed fishers on the east side of Augusta to target pink snapper and gummy sharks off the beach. The large swell and bits of seaweed meant that large rod-holders and 12ft+ rods are necessary to have a good fishing session. Herring have been in great numbers off the coast around the South West. Castle Rock and Eagle Bay have been quite productive for herring while Smiths Beach has been great for pinkies when fishing into the night. The Busselton Jetty has continued to produce mulloway, squid and pink snapper through the nights. Drone fishers have continued to land pinkies from Buffalo Beach and Belvedere Beach.
Perth catches
Glen Liebold caught this 90cm pink snapper near Five Fathom Bank during a recent winter session. A solid effort! 📷 Eddie Shepard

Boats

Fishing off metro has been great for demersals, when boaties have had the chance, they've been heading out to 10-20m depths for pinkies and out deeper to target dhufish. There's been some nice clearer water in Cockburn Sound allowing kayakers and families with small boats to safely target squid and King George whiting. Fishing near the reefs using dinghies and kayaks north of Ocean Reef has allowed fishers to target tailor to 55cm. Those who have access to side-scanners have had great success finding mulloway and schools of tailor with in the upper-middle Swan River system. As shown above, Five Fathom Bank has been doing quite well for pink snapper as well.

Shore-based

Shore-based fishing has been quite active this week with a variety of fish being caught from the beaches around town. When the swell has been up, and the seaweed has banked up near the beaches, pink snapper have been close by. Drone fishers off Mindarie and Ocean Reef have been able to land pink snapper up to 90cm. Tailor off Two Rocks have been quite consistent with float rigs being the most effective. Lure fishing for tailor has been popping off with most spots being north of Two Rocks, Trigg Beach and near good reef structure. Skippy to 40cm have been caught off the Mindarie rockwall. Squid have been prolific off North and South Mole.

Matt Macready has had some great success landing a few tailor North of Perth in the whitewash. Using the light-gear setup and shiverstick, he'd be quite chuffed with that!
