G'day <>,

Last weekend, I went down south to visit my brothers family while they were staying at Busselton. I decided to pack a few of the old rods to give the niece and nephew a chance to try and catch a fish. Turns out the beaches in front of Siesta Park are packed full of small tarwhine giving the kids a great opportunity to try their hand at fishing!

Malik managed to land his first ever fish, and safe to say now I have to take him fishing after school every week 🙄

If you're planning to head out this week, stay safe, take plenty of photos and have fun!

For anyone wanting to contribute to the weekly fishing report, photos reflecting Recfishwest's responsible fish handling practices will be given preference.

Shhhh, secret spot!

Edward Moses was overjoyed that he one-upped his son (not that it was a hard task) on this years annual Quobba trip with this solid gold spot trevally.
Broome catches
Who ordered a super-size big Mack? Graeme Walker blew it out of the park with this shore-based Spanish mackerel measuring in at 1.61 metres, fun fact: the same height as Joe Pesci!

Boats

The winds have been up since the start of the week, but the forecast ahead is looking better with the easterly winds dropping. Most have avoided reef fishing over the last week but are expected to head out this weekend. Great fishing for sailfish continues in the region, with many of the captures coming from areas surrounding Barred Creek. Fishers targeting sailfish have had quite a few cobia coming up and hitting skirts, with a few also being caught close in surrounding town. Tuskfish have also been caught in the bay when fishers battled the winds, with many of the common pelagic species such as tuna and queenfish on offer too.

A quick duck under the surface revealed the goods for Kat D as she nailed this coral trout with pin-point accuracy. 🎯

Shore-based

The town jetty has been fishing well recently, with a few larger sized queenfish being caught along with the various smaller species of trevally which frequent the structure. Good numbers of mud crabs have been coming in from the aptly-named Crab Creek, mostly browns with a few greens in the mix too. A couple smaller sized barramundi in the 60-70cm range have been caught in the areas surrounding Telegraph.
Exmouth catches
A few pearls for Kyle Poole, aka the Salty Horse, resulted in a great fishing session and a solid feed! 🦪 Caught in around 200m of water off Tantabiddi, a great picture!

Boats

Boaties have been having some great success on the stickbaits and poppers recently, landing some solid queenfish. Out wider, a few goldband snapper are being caught and an On Strike Charter client recently landed a rosy jobfish. Going north of Tantabbiddi with some trolling lures along the back of the reef has resulted in some great Spanish mackerel. Going on the southern side of Tantabiddi, inside the lagoon has been great for coral trout, small GTs and spangled emperor. The Exmouth Gulf has been productive for coral trout and bluebone around some of the shoals.

Shore-based

The Exmouth Marina has been producing a few mangrove jack around the pylons. Learmonth Jetty is a great spot to try and catch a few squid. The eastern side of the Gulf is producing solid golden trevally and giant herring in the shallows. Oyster Reef is fishing well for trevally and queenfish. Warroora Station has had reports of spangled emperor being caught this week.

Kalbarri catches

Boats

The recent drops in swell meant boat fishers could get out into some great pelagic action. Spanish mackerel and tuna have been quite common on the northern side of town. Along the Cliffs and Wagoe have also been productive with Spanish mackerel. The Cliffs have also been producing good numbers of pink snapper for the boaties. Out wider, dhufish and the odd coral trout have been caught as well.

Shore-based

Thursday and Friday have been great for gas-ballooning for Spanish mackerel off Wagoe with fishers reporting good results. A couple of fishers had great success off the marina jetty landing a 1m mulloway. Tailor have been ferocious against the lures around Chinaman's and Wittecarra, however the ones there are smaller sized. Bream have been great farther up the river, while green mud crabs have been in good numbers around the jetty. Whiting have been prolific with the cleaner water and pink snapper and baldchin are being landed at the Cliffs.
Mid West catches
Perth Fishing Safaris led by Robbie Riches put their clients on the goods on one of their recent trips north, including this silver ghost 👻

Boats

Boat fishers off Dongara have had some prime fishing weather with a variety of species being caught. Pink snapper and dhufish have been encountered a few km out of town near Irwin Reef alongside tailor and skippy. Northwest of town there have been a few baldchin alongside a few large Samson fish being caught. Small boat fishers have been casting poppers and surface stickbaits at shallow bits of reef resulting in some solid tailor action. A few of the sheltered locations around Jurien Bay such as the islands are doing well for pink snapper and the odd baldchin. The decent weather during the middle of the week allowed a few to also go out wider to land dhufish

Shore-based

The Mid West has been excellent during the week for those fishers who got the chance to get off work or are working FIFO. A few mulloway have been landed north of Dongara inbetween small sharks and the occasional "car bonnet". Wedge Island has had a few herring, flathead and whiting being caught, however, seaweed has been a problem, so moving around and finding the right spot is important. Skippy and herring are being caught from the usual rock walls along the Mid West such as Jurien Harbour, Geraldton and Port Denison.
Lancelin catches
Ray Hill from the Swan Yacht Club Angling scored this solid dhufish over the weekend.

Boats

The weather hindered boat fishers again this week, with swell making launching a boat difficult. A number of fishers from Swan Yacht Club's angling group were spending a few days fishing in the Lancelin area and joined in on the last event for the season on Saturday at Lancelin Angling Club ‘Rear Commodore's Cup’. Most fishers managed to weigh in several fish, though only one snapper showed, with most the demersal mix made up of dhufish, baldchin and breaksea cod. Samson fish were caught from the inshore reefs and some impressive-sized sand whiting were bagged from the 20m depths. There was a lot of surge within the bay making inshore fishing difficult, herring were hard to find although skippy and squid have been in good numbers.

Shore-based

The surf beaches had a lot of surge from ground swell, making it difficult to fish if there was any weed in the water. Graeme Doodson managed to battle the seaweed and landed a cracking 10kg snapper shore-casting. The jetty has proven to be the place to fish during the swells resulting in some good catches of tailor, squid, yellowfin whiting, yelloweye mullet and skippy for the anglers who can work out how to get past the blowfish.

Esperance catches

Boats

Esperance fishers have taken advantage of the weather gap to get out and chase a few fish. Fishing inshore has been the go as people were a bit worried about the unpredictable winds coming through the week. King George whiting up to 40cm have been on offer with heaps of sand whiting. A few squid have been entered into the Chase the Kraken comp this week and is shaping up to be very competitive with one entering in at 45.5cm hood this week. Those who did venture offshore found good numbers of nannygai, breaksea cod and the odd dhufish.

Southern Sports & Tackle is running the "Chase the Kraken" competition from 18th June until 1st of August. With multiple prizes on the line, this weekend is a good chance to get in and compete! To find out more about this event, check out their Facebook page or head into their shop!

Shore-based

Roses Beach has been great for shore-based fishers with a variety of species on offer including; tailor up to 2kg, skippy up to 5kg and big "3 metrey" flathead caught around the West Corner. Rubbish Tips is also a good option for skippy and the odd salmon. Black bream up to 40cm are being caught in Lake Quallilup as well.
Great Southern catches
Ashleigh Fielding was chuffed when she landed this King George whiting the other day!

Boats

The main goal of boat fishers this week has been to find the clearer water. Squid cracking the 40cm hood mark and whiting have been abundant. Pink snapper have been quite close in shore. Tuna captures have started to decrease coinciding with their migratory patterns. Queen snapper and breaksea have been caught around the deeper reefs. If you're keen for a fight on the heavy gear, Sambo's have been in good numbers. Dhufish have been found in the shallower depths, however, they've been in the smaller sizes. Out wide on the shelf, nannygai and hapuka have been in good numbers and quite big, with nannygai approaching the 4kg mark. Spearfishers off Bremer Bay have had success targeting dhufish and breaksea cod.

Shore-based

Fishing shore-based down south has been rewarding for some fishers chasing pink snapper. Black bream have been quite good-sized with a few fish cracking the 40cm mark in the King River system. Whiting have been prolific with plenty being caught off the beaches alongside herring. Skippy have been great fun on the light gear with a few up to 45cm being landed off Goode Beach.
South West catches

Boats

Some strong northerly winds earlier in the week have brought pink snapper in much closer to the shore along Geographe Bay, with plenty of fish being caught between in depths between 4-22m mark. Smaller boats have found some excellent King George whiting and squid within the bay. Samson fish have been in good numbers, especially around the Bunbury Artificial Reef, with a few pink snapper and skippy being caught in between.

Shore-based

The Busselton Jetty is still fishing very well for squid, pink snapper and mulloway. The recent strong winds turned the fishing action up a notch with plenty of squid ink being left on the jetty and pink snapper being caught in plentiful numbers. Herring continue to be found in great numbers around the South West. Castle Rock, Bunker Bay and Eagle bay been reliable spots for herring.

I had success last Sunday casting twistys and small shiversticks at Castle Rock, however, another fisher ended up getting his bag limit within half-an-hour by running a simple straw rig, basic but extremely effective.
Mandurah and surrounds

Mandurah

The weather has been making the fishing difficult around Mandurah, with the commonly targeted species harder to find. Although, those who have been braving the conditions and are ‘in the know’ have been recording some fantastic crayfish captures. Locals have been putting their pots out much closer to the reefs then what you would during the ‘whites run’ with great success. Recent rains have also filled the Murray and Serpentine rivers with flood water and next weeks tide drops down to 0.3m. This will allow some of the flood water to exit the system, creating the ideal conditions for a great snapper bite while also making the King George whiting more active. Fishers who have been casting floating rigs and metals from rock walls have had some good success on chopper tailor also.

Tim's Thicket and White Hills have been fishing quite well for herring and a few tailor up to 2 kg. A 6 kg snapper was also taken from the beach at Preston last weekend. There are still a few salmon being caught on the southern beaches. The Cut is producing good fishing for skippy, King George whiting and yellowfin whiting. There are also some crabs about. The northern beaches are fishing well for some good-sized skippy, big King George whiting, plenty of sand whiting and a few big herring. There are pilch being caught along the beaches around Madora and Golden Bay.

Secret Harbour / Port Kennedy / Rockingham / Safety Bay

The region has been continuing to experience some of the best snapper fishing around. The gutters from Secret Harbour, Golden Bay and Silver Sands have been producing some exceptional snapper with most fish on the larger size up to 80-90cm. Most have had more success using drones to get the baits out wide, however, those who have just been casting baits from the sand have had great success too. Along with the pink snapper, some nice mulloway are also being recorded with fish over a meter coming in from the region. Point Peron is producing good numbers of pilch, a few herring, tarwhine and some tailor. Penguin Island has seen good numbers of sand whiting and a few flathead along with some reasonable tailor and an odd salmon. There are still reports of salmon being caught in the metro area, with most coming from the southern metropolitan beaches.
Perth catches
Tyler Hewson had a solid session on the snapper last weekend on the inside of Five Fathom Bank. Excellent work, mate!

Boats

The safe and accessible waters of Cockburn Sound have been creating great opportunities for small boat fishers and kayakers to target King George whiting, squid and herring. Good numbers of pink snapper are being reported along the 10-25m mark. Those wanting to target dhufish effectively have had to go out a little deeper into the 30+ metre depths. If you’re fishing for demersals, be sure to have a release weight on board and use it to release undersized fish to maximise the likelihood of survival. Skippy have been found on some inshore reefs along the northern metro coast with local metro fisher, Beau Suladra catching a mid 50s skippy. Samson fish have made their presence felt, with the fish being attracted to a good burley trail. Casting surface lures around inshore reefs will likely produce some good sized tailor from the 40-50cm mark.

Shore-based

With the strong winds and large swell predicted for over the weekend, expect shore based snapper chasers to be out in full force. Squid reports continue to improve with the recent run of clear weather, with Fremantle's North and South Mole, the Woodman Point groyne and Mindarie marina being the spots to try. Many of the metro marina rock walls are also producing herring and a few yellowtail scads. The northern beaches continue to produce good sized tailor, with early morning being the most productive time to target these fish. Whitewater breaking over the reefs is your friend here, as tailor use this as cover to hunt down their prey.
