G'day <>,

Sadly, this is my last State-wide Fishing Report as editor, with Jarrad Lawford to take the reins moving forward.

It's been great fun reporting on what has been biting across the state, calling around and putting together the report.

For everyone who has supplied fantastic photos, information and tips, thank you!

If you've got any fishing photos or information to share, be sure to email them to Jarrad@recfishwest.org.au to potentially be featured in upcoming reports.

Make sure to check out this one-stop fishing website!

The Lake Kununurra Barramundi Stocking Group's new website has gone live! It’s a one-stop shop for terrific fishing insight and handy tips on how and where to best fish for barra on Lake Kununurra, where more than one million barra have been stocked since 2013. This website has been made possible with the help of Recfishwest and support from the State Government.

Broome catches
Celeste McDonald has been rocking the local Broome-based Reef Chief merch and landing a few solid Spanish mackies over the week.

Boats

It’s been pelagic pursuit this last week with plenty of great fish being landed, including the great Spanish Mackerel captured by Celeste Mcdonald pictured above, alongside mackerel, numbers of longtail tuna, cobia and some big golden trevally commonly encountered. Those targeting sailfish out wide have had great success with many fishers raising and capturing multiple fish in each session. Again, most seem to be coming from the areas surrounding Barred Creek and Quandong. Some great sized fingermark have also been caught closer to shore around Gantheaume Point, with the reef fishing in 30-40m being productive for red emperor and coral trout.

The Spanish mackerel have been in full force lately with Kat D also landing this model as well!

Shore-based

Fishing off the town jetty just hasn’t seemed to slow down recently, with good captures of the usual suspects such as queenfish and various trevally species continuing for the structure. Sportfishers have been having some good success using soft plastics and hardbody lures to catch queenfish and trevally at Entrance Point and Echo Beach also. A few smaller winter barramundi have been caught from the Fitzroy, namely in the Telegraph Pool area, and a couple mud crabs have also been captured from Willie Creek recently.
Exmouth catches
This young gun might not realise this, but heaps of fishers spend thousands of dollars and hours and chasing these prized fish! An awesome top water red bass, great work! 📷 On Strike Charters

Boats

The tuna bite has been great with numbers of longtail tuna being captured by those targeting them on fly, trolling deep diving lures and on stickbaits. Size has been variable, although there has been a good number of larger sized models. Alongside them there has been some great mackerel with captures of Spanish, shark and grey variants, all of which have been above average in size. Most of these have come from the west side and areas surrounding the Murions. The Gulf has been fishing really well for coral trout and bluebone, with fishers drifting over coral bombies using soft plastic lures, vibes, and lightly weighted baits. Some great red emperor have been picked up out wider. Those stick baiting and popping for GT along the back of reefs have been doing well with a couple of fish approaching 30kg being landed on the west side.

Jay Spencer has been on the hunt for some big ol' spangos. Looks like he got what he wanted 😎

Shore-based

Fishers who have tried their luck for bonefish in the region have been well rewarded with a number of great captures coming in from the shallow lagoons on the west side. Squid have been picked up from the town marina and Bundegi boat ramp around dusk. Queenfish, golden trevally and smaller sized giant trevally have been common encounters on all the west side accesses. Queenfish have also been turning up on the beaches extending into the southern parts of Exmouth Gulf. Yellowfin whiting have been on offer at the beaches closer to town.

Scott's Stories: recreational fishing, a genuine life saver for Darryl McPhee

A young Daryl McPhee with a Spanish mackerel.

It's widely known that recreational fishing is a healthy form of outdoor recreation that provides benefits to both physical and mental well-being. Scott Coghlan recently wrote a piece about how recreational fishing for leading Queensland marine biologist Daryl McPhee was a way for him to deal with homelessness and put food on the table.

Kalbarri catches

Boats

When the boat fishers had a chance to head out, there have been good numbers of pelagic and demersal species being caught. Out wide, the charter boats have been picking up big honker pink snapper over 80cm and coral trout. In closer, pink snapper have been the highlight demersal with a few also cracking the 80cm+ mark. Spanish mackerel are still doing the damage to lures and rigged garfish near the Cliffs and off Wagoe.

Shore-based

With the recent swell, the river has been the optimal choice for fishers looking to escape the seaweed and surge off the coast. There have been some excellent reports of mulloway up to 15kg being caught from the river mouth around the Sand Spit. A large mulloway was also landed right in front of IGA and the jetty as well. Bream and cod are also on offer throughout the river, while big tailor have been hiding in the choppy whitewash around Chinaman's with poppers and surface stickbaits causing some spectacular sights for the fishers being rewarded with 65cm+ fish.
Mid West catches
Mathew Svenson @mat.svenson snagged this beauty of a mulloway on a recent paddle out from the Mid West, wouldn't have been easy trying to lift this beast and stay balanced at the same time!

Boats

Off Geraldton, yellowfin tuna have been turning up in 25-35m depths from Point Moore, heading south. They have also been reported off Drummonds Cove as well. Earlier in the week when the weather was playing ball for keen anglers, those launching off Dongara had success directly west of the Marina around 10-15km out where many had successful trolls for Spanish mackerel. A few fishers who decided to do some bottom bouncing have reported solid catches of pink snapper and baldchin.

Shore-based

If you manage to find some clear grounds and cast a line over the surf break, mulloway have been on the bite around Drummonds and Coronations. South of Horrocks, keen lure fishers have been running poppers and landing 65cm greenback tailor and a few smaller models in the mix as well. If you manage to find a clear patch of ground, fishers have had success landing whiting using tiny minnows and blades. Squid off the Batavia Marina have been a little hit or miss but still worth a shot. Flat Rocks has been producing some solid tailor on stickbaits and unweighted gang rigs, with scalies seeming to be the best choice of bait when running unweighted rigs.
Lancelin catches

Boats

The beach surge has deterred boats from launching and fishing Lancelin waters for most the week, although the weather for this weekend is looking favourable, with lower winds from Saturday through to Tuesday hopefully providing easier access to the water for anglers who don't mind a bit of rain.

Shore-based

Weed has been a problem throughout this week along many of the beaches and a lot of spots have sanded up, limiting the opportunities of most fishers to wet a line and forcing them to travel elsewhere. Narrow Neck north of town and Fence Reef to the south gave the best locations to escape the weed and find some deeper water. Each day the weed is moving with the tide, so it pays to get out early to scope a good location prior to settling into a beach fishing session. For those who managed to avoid the weed and wet a line off the beach, flathead, tailor and sand whiting were caught. The town jetty has not been at its best for the school holidays, although some anglers managed good catches consisting of tailor, skippy, squid and herring with the best catches at night under the lighting towers.

Esperance catches

Boats

Good winter weather provided calmer waters and allowed plenty of fishers to head out this week. Samson fish around the 25kg mark have been caught around the islands, while queen snapper up to 9kg have been pulled in from the shallows. Plenty of nannygai and breaksea cod have also been caught, providing some tasty feeds for anglers. The nannies have been quite widespread, while the breaksea have been caught around the rocky bommies most frequently between 30-40m of water.

Southern Sports & Tackle is running the "Chase the Kraken" competition from 18th June until 1st of August. With multiple prizes on the line, this weekend is a good chance to get in and compete! To find out more about this event, check out their Facebook page or head into their shop!

Shore-based

Solid flathead up to 60cm have been caught along the foreshore and throughout the drop-offs in Bandy Creek. The Esperance Jetty continues to produce big squid and plump herring, while the rock walls along Taylor Street have fished well for King George whiting and skippy. The beaches to the west of town such as Munglinup have seen numerous mulloway and gummy sharks pulled in late into the evenings, while plenty of salmon are still being caught to the east of town.
Great Southern catches
Chris Dixon snagged this great underwater hook up shot of a squid off Albany this week. Make sure you check out his Instagram page @dixonsfishing to see the squid and big sambos he caught this week along the southern coast!

Boats

Boats have continued to collect their feed of squid and King George whiting within the Bay by finding the broken ground of weed and sand patches. A few fishers managed to make it all the way to the shelf where they were rewarded with plenty of hapuka and nannies in deeper waters. In close, there were reports of pinkies and dhufish being caught in around 20m of water from Walpole all the way to Bremer Bay. Speaking of Bremer Bay, demersals have been in close with the temperature dropping down. With the temperature being 17 degrees in Bremer, dhufish and pink snapper have been pulled from shallow reefs off the headlands. Interestingly, even though the squidding has been prolific around Albany, Bremer Bay has been relatively quiet when it comes to the tasty cephalopods.

Shore-based

Off the land it has been relatively quiet over the past week, tailor have gone AWOL, although a few salmon and flathead are still being landed in close over sand. One young lad reported being smoked by a Samson fish from the beach, while a few breaksea are also being hooked near the deeper reefs. Squid have been caught near Whale World and Two People's Bay from the inshore weed patches mostly around sunrise and sunset when the swell is more calm, and a gentle wind can assist with the distance of casts. Decent bream are still also being caught up river, but less mulloway were reported landed this week. Large herring and sand whiting are being caught off the beaches using squid tentacles, prawns and worms in paternoster rig setups. Plenty of salmon are still being caught around Bremer Bay in the gutters and bowls of the beaches.
South West catches
Luke Ryan from Tacklewest has been out and about chasing black bream in the Blackwood River.

Boats

Amongst the wet and windy conditions, fishers who managed to find a good weather window have had another great week on the pink snapper from Bunbury to Busselton. Most did not venture too far offshore and don’t need to be, finding the species in close at depths around the 10-20m mark. Most have managed to reel in more than one fish each session, with the key being to set a good burley trail if you’re anchoring in the shallower waters. Boat fishers in Geographe Bay have also picked up a few dhufish in depths of 20m+ over the last week, with this Saturday's weather forecast providing opportunity for boat fishers to get out to the deeper depths with flatter conditions expected.

Shore-based

The Busselton Jetty has continued to fish well for squid in the region, with hoods up to 30cm being reeled in from late afternoon to night time. There’s also a few whispers of some mulloway and pink snapper being caught from the structure as well for patient anglers. Pink snapper and only a few mulloway were caught from the beaches located between Quindalup and Busselton during the week, with only few getting out to wet a line. With recent stormy conditions, fish are likely to be a lot closer in than what you may think. Those targeting bread and butter species have found herring, skippy and whiting in the areas from Castle Rock to Eagle Bay.

Freshwater

Freshwater contributor, John Dempsey, had some great success landing rainbow trout at Drakesbrook last weekend.
Harvey dam continues to fish well for big winter redfin with deep jigged soft plastics doing most of the damage for successful anglers. Rumours coming out of Collie suggest that a few nice Rainbow Trout have been caught out of Wellington Dam, possibly a result of last year's stocking. It's now the time of year where the trout in our dams and rivers will begin to spawn. It's important to leave the fish be during these times, so if you see trout congregating take a photo instead of chucking a lure!
Mandurah and surrounds

Mandurah

The northern beaches are starting to produce decent fish with tailor, herring and whiting being taken along the San Remo to Golden Bay section. A few solid bream are being landed around Yunderup and a little further upstream in the Murray River. Most of the beaches this week have had their fair share of weed due to stronger winds and swell, however there are spots where it has cleared, allowing anglers to fish. The beaches at Preston, White Hills and Tim's Thicket are producing plenty of herring, along with a few small mulloway around the 50cm mark and tailor between 35-50cm. Yellow-eye mullet are also being taken in numbers at times and size is improving. The Dawesville Cut is producing some big herring, King George whiting, yellow-eye mullet, tarwhine and yellowfin whiting.

Secret Harbour / Port Kennedy / Rockingham / Safety Bay

Becher Point and Point Peron have been producing good catches of the smaller species such as whiting and herring throughout this week. Yellow-eye mullet have been featuring prominently in most bags of fish. Right along the southern metropolitan beaches there are plenty of herring still being taken on a variety of baits and smaller lures, along with plenty of yellowfin whiting mostly caught on smaller pieces of squid and prawn. There are some reasonable tailor being caught on occasion around Point Peron. Anglers fishing in Warnbro Sound are still catching snapper, along with some good-sized King George whiting and squid across the broken sand and weed patches.
Perth catches
Shane Pope and his son, Lachie punched out of Mindarie at 7am to 42m and found a nice showing on some ground that they previously marked. On their second drift, Lachie's new NS Explorer loaded up and after some big runs and head shakes he landed his first sized pinkie in style with this 72cm model. Excellent work!

Boats

The relatively calm weather that Perth experienced over the week made for great boating conditions, with plenty of fishers making the most of the flat water to head out and target a wide range of species. Pink snapper continue to be the pick of the catches, with good fish being caught in relatively shallow water. Five Fathom Bank in the south and Three Mile Reef in the north have both been reliable spots to target them. Out wide, Two Rocks has produced mixed bags of dhufish and snapper, along with the occasional breaksea cod. Small boats have been able to locate some good sand whiting off Cottesloe and City Beach, with those fishing south of Fremantle reporting some nice King George whiting through broken ground of weed and sand. Seagrass beds within Cockburn Sound and those to the north of Hillarys continue to produce good numbers of squid in larger sizes. The water off Perth is expected to be quite flat from Saturday through to Wednesday for anglers although we're in for a wet week!

Shore-based

Tailor have been a great species to target during the early mornings and late evenings, with some solid fish around 50cm being pulled in. Herring continue to be caught from most metro-based marinas when burley is used, while the south metro marinas and rockwalls have been the pick for squid during the calmer conditions. Once again, snapper will be on the cards over the weekend as heavy winds from Thursday and Friday will see the species come in closer to reef and rock structures chasing crustaceans. A few mulloway are also being caught off the metro beaches early in the morning and late into the night.
