G'day <>,

I've quickly taken over for this week's and next week's fishing report until the man in charge returns to his post. This week has been interesting for me as I prepare to chase pink snapper shore-based when the weather calms down on Sunday. Setting up the gear, retying rigs, spooling up the Saragosa and buying bait reminded me how expensive fishing sometimes can be!

Remember to keep sending us your catches by tagging #recfishwest in your online posts! You can also private message your catches to our Instagram page @recfishwest and let us know where and how you caught it!

For your photos to appear in the weekly fishing report, please make sure they reflect Recfishwest's responsible fish handling practices, just like the images below.

If you're planning to head out this week, stay safe, take plenty of photos and have fun!

Pic of the Week!

Marine Scientist, Indy Thompson has been out with Sean Tracey deploying Sat tags on sailfish for the pelagic foundation. With the help of Peak Sportfishing Adventures, they were able to find a few off Exmouth and track movements of sailfish and billfish throughout the Indian Ocean. A worthy cause AND Pic of the Week!

Extras!

The Montebello Islands have been an amazing fishing destination for those keen on heading north. Mitch and Tom Ward have been living the dream landing some great species such as this red emperor and green jobfish. Awesome stuff!

Broome catches
Angus Line has been patrolling the waters north of Broome and came across this beaut tarpon, would have been a fun fight on the fly line!

Boats

The Broome Fishing Club held the annual Broome Billfish Classic over the last week with the event kicking off on Sunday the 24th until the 26th with club presentations on Wednesday the 27th. Over 30 boats entered this year’s competition although the fishing a bit quieter than previous competitions, with only a few marlin being raised. Many sailfish were raised although it proved to be difficult to commit to the bite with the speedsters fixing in on smaller bait that was present in the area. The region is down in the neap tides at the moment with some minor sea breezes making for some great reef fishing out a bit wider. Some nice blue salmon have been caught in the bay, with captures expected to increase over the coming week as the tides begin to change.

Shore-based

The fishing has been a bit difficult in recent days with the landbased captures that were around last week dropping. Expect to see some more great landbased captures of mackerel and tuna over the coming week as the neap tides come to an end. The town beach jetty has had some smaller trevally hanging around with metal slices being the go-to for the structure. Mud crabs have been on offer in the usual haunts around Crab creek and fingers.
Exmouth catches
"Money, Money, Money" Mr Krabs got caught by Kyle Poole aka the Salty Horse over the weekend. Solid feed on that one! 🦀

Boats

Great weather has continued for the region, allowing for fishers to target whichever species they have desired. The sportfishing has been stellar with a plenty of sailfish being raised and captured from the usual charter boats and travelling fishers on the Westside. The mackerel and tuna bite continues with trolled bibbed minnows being the most effective fishing method, allowing fishers to cover a bigger area. When bait balls have shown up, punters have been having great success on stickbaits although some have been finding it harder to land the fish amongst sharks. When casting into bait balls its best to use heavier gear as in these situations sharks are always nearby and it’s important to overpower the fish if you wish to land it before the sharks get to it first! Goldband snapper have been caught out wider in the 80-120m depths although reports are that the size has been below average this week. However, out even wider in the 200-300m depths some very nice ruby snapper have been getting caught. Closer inshore and spangled emperor have been turning up everywhere for boat anglers. The Gulf has been productive over the last week for those who had a crack also. Plenty of coral trout and some decently sized tuskfish have been found by those putting in the effort to scout ground and find the bombies spread throughout the area. One lucky spearfisher also managed to score themselves a barramundi cod from the Gulf as well.

Benjamin Franklin said nothing is certain except death and taxes. Jayson Spencer managed to avoid both, getting this Rankin past the men in grey suits.

Shore-based

Nice captures of yellowfin whiting have continued for the beaches surrounding town and down into the gulf with fishers having success on a variety of lures and baits. The spangled emperor bite hasn’t slowed down either with fish coming in from all the usual haunts from the westside, VLF Bay and Lighthouse Bay. Amongst the captures of spangos, plenty of queenfish and smaller trevally have been caught as well. A great sized queenfish was also captured from the Learmonth Jetty earlier in the week. Squid from the marina have been firing of late with captures from Bundegi boat ramp and Learmonth Jetty also continuing.

Scott's Species: Bludger trevally, the north coast party gate crashers

A pack of bludger trevally chasing down a popper! 🏇

Bludger trevally aren’t something you generally expect to catch. They are more an occasional capture popping up while chasing other species. However, when they do show up they usually are like the most out-of-control party gate crashers – bringing a heap of enthusiastic friends and causing chaos!

CHECK OUT WHAT SCOTT HAS TO SAY ABOUT THESE SPECIES HERE!

Kalbarri catches
Corey, Luke and the crew had a great time hiring out a 5.3m vessel from Murchison Boat Hire, with multiple captures of pink snapper, Samson fish and Spanish mackerel keeping them consistently entertained!

Boats

When there was a good gap in the weather, bigger boats and charters went out to target a variety of species. Spanish mackerel have continued to be consistent on the trolling lures and gardies with the odd cobia as a by-catch. Big pink snapper, the type to hit the side of the boat and have a bump on its head have been turning up with a few cracking the 10kg mark. Dhufish and baldchin have also been on offer in the 30-40m of depths. Samson fish have also been turning up close to shore with a few of the guys with Corey and Luke landing them.

Shore-based

Not much has changed since last week in terms of shore-based fishing. Mulloway have been quite consistent with one or two being landed most nights. Fishing has been mostly limited to the river, with mulloway being caught from the Marina Jetty and the occassional one from the Sand Spit. Running garfish on a float/cork rig or using poppers have been the go-to for many tailor enthusiasts, with fish up to 65cm being caught. Bream have been fairly consistent with fish up to the 35cm mark. Blue swimmer crabs are starting to pop up alongside the green mud crabs. Red Bluff has continued to produce good numbers of garfish as well.
Geraldton catches
Last week, Mat Svenson had a great time pulling in some fun sized Sambos in the yak. Excellent work!

Boats

Geraldton fishing has been quite difficult, with bad water, swell and surge all causing issues for boat fishers and shore-based fishers alike. When there has been a chance to go out, most have been staying in close. Some of the species that are being caught include smaller sized dhufish, estuary cod and pink snapper. A few squid fishers have been dropping jigs from Pages to Separations over the seagrass beds, however the waters have been quite dirty making the squid action a little slow.

Shore-based

As said, with seaweed and swell being an issue, most of the fishing has been limited to north of Geraldton. Those who got through the seaweed managed to find mulloway up to 10-13kg and the odd small shark. Burleying up off the beaches have been producing good numbers of pike and herring. Hopefully, next week the weather clears up and fishers get out and catch some fish!

If you're in town and need advice, make sure to pop into Geraldton Sports and Tackle and they can give you a hand.
Lancelin catches

Boats

A week of big swells has made it difficult to launch and impossible to safely leave the bay with a trailer boat. The forecast shows no sign of improvement. Time to do the maintenance on boat and safety equipment in preparation for when the passing storms ease.

Shore-based

While there have been some offshore winds allowing beach fishers to get a line out, the surf beaches haven’t proven to be very productive. There is a lot of surge from the swell and fish seem to have moved to deeper or calmer areas where they can rest. The shelter of the bay has been quite productive, north and south points have seen some tailor, whiting and herring catches. The jetty has been going off with plenty of herring, garfish and skippy, sunsets have seen some cracking tailor over 60cm. Baitfish sheltering under the jetty has also attracted the attention of marauding Samson fish.

Want to know how to rig anti shark bite-off gear like Sharkbanz?

Click on the image above to watch Ashley Ramm from Tackle World Miami in Mandurah explain how to best rig a Sharkbanz magnet to your line.
At $100 a pop, Sharkbanz magnets are an expensive investment to lose if a shark tears through your line, although plenty of anglers have reported good results in deterring the tax man away from their catch. With this in mind, we asked Ashley Ramm from Tackle World Miami in Mandurah to explain how to best set up your Sharkbanz rig.

Esperance catches

Boats

When the weather has permitted, local fishers have made the most of it and headed out wide in search for some tasty demersal treats. Nannygai, breaksea cod and harlequin fish were on the special menu, with the fish being found between the 20-40m mark. The fishers who have been targetting bottom fish have also encountered good yellowtail kingfish and Samson fish, while those wanting to specifically target these species have focused their efforts around the nearby islands. Unfortunately with the weather not looking too promising over the weekend, boat fishers might be thinking twice before launching.

Southern Sports & Tackle is still running the "Chase the Kraken" competition from 18th June until 1st of August. There's only a week left! With multiple prizes on the line, this weekend is a good chance to get in and compete! To find out more about this event, check out their Facebook page or head into their shop!

Shore-based

The rockwall along Taylor Street still has some good skippy around, while the Esperance Jetty is fishing well for herring, squid and garfish. King George whiting and the odd flathead are still being picked up by those fishing along the foreshore, with the fish being caught along the edge of the seagrass beds. Heading west of town, beach fishers have found some very good mulloway along the stretch near Munglinup.
Great Southern catches
Chris Dixon has been on the fishing grind lately and was rewarded with this stunning harlequin fish.

Boats

Boat fishers have had a tough time getting out far this past week due to weather issues. Those who did find a gap in the weather mostly found queen snapper and breaksea cod being caught inside Frenchman Bay. Princess Royal Harbour was also one of the main spots where boat fishers could stay sheltered while fishing for skippy, King George whiting and squid. A few pink snapper were also landed last week in Bremer Bay out of a tinny.

Callum Dowell has been limit testing his "Mussel Vibe" creation recently on these thumping big black bream. Check out his lures here!

Shore-based

A few winter tailor have been reported around The Sand Patch, however the large swell has been a problem for those trying to land them on lure. Those who did make the venture there needed to run big rod holders and minimum 12ft rods to get the line over the wave. Herring have been plentiful around town with families catching plenty for a feed, large skippy have also been on the bite with some up to 3kg plus. A few keen fishers have been droning baits when the winds have allowed over the week and were rewarded with some 80-90cm pink snapper. Fishing for black bream is also a good option for those looking to stay safe, the Kalgan has been great with large black bream up to 45cm being caught.
South West catches
A coupla big boi squid coming from underneath the Busselton Jetty caught by Kholen Smith Ratana. Great work, mate! 🦑

Boats

Dhufish and snapper have been fishing well off Bunbury, with most fish being caught around the 20m mark. Those wanting to specifically target dhuies have had to travel out a bit further in slightly deeper water. There have also been a few reports of amberjack being caught by fishers in the area, which have been a welcome surprise to those who caught them. Further south in Geographe Bay, small boat fishers are still doing well on inshore snapper, while the seagrass beds and holding big squid and the odd King George whiting.

Shore-based

The land based snapper chasers were once again out in full force, and those who put in the time were rewarded with some great fish from the sand. Herring were coming in thick and fast from the beaches prior to the front coming through; expect them to be back on the cards once the water clears up a bit. While we reported last week that the Collie River resembled “choccie milk” and recommended to avoid it, reports coming out of the area suggest that its fishing very well for mulloway and black bream. The Busselton Jetty is still fishing well for squid and herring, burley is your friend when trying to attract herring, while its good to keep walking along the jetty to find where the squid are holding up.

Freshwater

Solid Redfin 💪 Giordano Gervasi kayaking through the South West region brings fear into the heart of the redfin population. Epic work, mate!
The freshwater fishing scene has been going bananas lately with plenty of nice ex-broodstock rainbow trout being captured throughout our states Peel and South West regions. Many of the dams are fishing well at the moment with recent rains firing up some recently stocked fish. A couple brown trout have turned up as well although they aren’t being captured in the dams at the moment, with the Warren and Lefroy systems being the most productive. Some nice yearling size trout have also been captured from below Wellington Dam, with reports of spawning fish in the area. Redfin have been on offer in many of the dams and impoundments, although it seems recent captures have all been on the smaller side with most fish in the 15-30cm size range.
Mandurah and surrounds
Daniel Bulstrode is usually training back at the gym but this time he has chosen an alternative method, catching fish 💪  Measuring in at 88cm this pinkie would have had him going! Great stuff, mate!

Mandurah

Access to the southern beaches is a little restricted as recent swells have removed a lot of the beach. There are still reports of big tailor being caught along with some school and gummy sharks. The Dawesville Cut is still producing plenty of King George whiting, chopper tailor, herring and pilch. Squid are also being caught in reasonable numbers. Crabbers are still able to get a feed from the deep water and also in the Mary Street Lagoon. Yellowfin whiting are starting to show up along the beaches from Madora to Secret Harbour. Black bream continue to be taken in good numbers and size in the lower reaches of both the Murray and Serpentine River.

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Palm Beach jetty is producing a few herring and skippy and there are a lot of squid also in the area. Fishing at night seems to be working well for mulloway and small sharks, with a 10kg mulloway being landed by a local last week. Anglers fishing from the beach have found whiting, pilch and herring. Other locations in the region have been turning on good fishing for  whiting. Safety Bay Yacht Club and Rockingham Beach jetty have been producing herring and squid. There are a few herring along most of the beaches, but not in any great number. There are still some salmon around Point Peron.
Perth catches
Long time reader of the fishing report, Michael Jones had a tough time getting through the seaweed and rough weather but struck gold a few days ago. When the weather cleared up and after a few hours of fishing, he got his personal best tailor measuring in at 66cm off the northern beaches. Awesome work, mate!

Boats

Like most areas, the boaties have not had a good time with the weather. That being said, a few did manage to get out for a fish earlier this week. Pink snapper have been the main target, Luke Ryan from Tacklewest had success landing a few pinkies from Stragglers. Mulloway have also been caught during the night inside Cockburn Sound. A few dhufish have also been landed out from Two Rocks and Mindarie in 20-30m of water. The safe and accessible waters of Cockburn Sound have also been quite productive for squid over the seagrass beds. A dinghy fisher also had some great success just south of Hillarys and landed a few odd salmon on a soft plastic.

Shore-based

Shore-based fishing has been a little tough with the weather, however those with a bit of knowledge managed to land a few fish. North of town, seaweed has been a problem, but if you're targeting pinkies, you need a bit of a seaweed and swell... To deal with these things, you need a big rod holder and a solid rod 10ft or more to get the line over the wave. If you can fish through the night, you're in for a good chance of catching a pink snapper. Finding a good gutter and reef patches is key as well. Tailor fishing has been great for those who got up in the morning to chase them along reefs from Hillarys to Trigg. A simple cork rig off the rock walls is also an effective way to target them, however, probably not as fun as lure fishing. Squid have been mostly caught around Cockburn Sound, however, a few have been landed inside the Hillarys Marina near the AQWA jetty and off the inside of the Ocean Reef rockwall. In the river, winter black bream have been quite popular with sizes being larger but in smaller quantities. Fishing around good structure is key. Maylands and under the Canning Bridge are also solid places to try. A few snook, pike and herring have been around Quinns Rock, with the fish being mostly landed on small shiversticks and 5-15g twistys. Whiting and the odd chopper tailor is also being caught off E-Shed making for some great family fishing.

Andrew Overbye was beaming when he caught his first ever fish on a lure, while out fishing with Jake Rotham. Awesome stuff, hooked for life i'm sure! 🎣
