G'day <>,

This week's fishing report is going to be a short one! With some real nasty weather smashing the coastline from Kalbarri to the Great Southern, it's been a real struggle to get reports if no one is fishing... that being said there have still been a few things happening across the state.

Today (Friday) and this weekend looks good for most regions so if you have a chance to get out for a fish, do it!

Remember to keep sending us your catches by tagging #recfishwest in your online posts! You can also private message your catches to our Instagram page @recfishwest and let us know where and how you caught it!

For your photos to appear in the weekly fishing report, please make sure they reflect Recfishwest's responsible fish handling practices, just like the images below.

If you're planning to head out this week, stay safe, take plenty of photos and have fun!

Pic of the Week!

The Pilbara is one of the hidden regions of WA when it comes to fishing, but those who know, know exactly why it's probably the best spot to take a boat. Ben Svenson was recently up in Karratha having a ripper session hooking into some solid GTs. Great work and this weeks pic of the week!

Extras!

Brodie Harrison has been having some great fun up north landing some solid golden trevally.

Broome catches
I wonder why they call them red emperor 🤔 Craig Watson was thrilled when he landed this beaut red emperor. 📷 Reef Chief Australia

Boats

Broome has seen some great fishing lately from the boats with Spanish mackerel being quite common in the Bay and north of town. Longtail tuna have also been quite prolific hitting stickbaits in the Bay. Farther out to Disaster Rock, there have been the odd queenfish and some big Spanish mackerel caught. Sailfish have been quiet lately due to the large presence of pilot whales in the area. There have been some mack tuna being caught near the Pearl Farm, however, they were feeding on micro baits and were super finicky, try running some small metals 15g or less to entice them. The Fitzroy River is doing well currently for barramundi with a few hitting the 1m mark.

Shore-based

When the tides are right, the shore-based fishing has been quality to say the least. The Broome Jetty have been holding some solid trevally and the odd Spanish mackerel. There has also been rumours of a solid cobia that was caught off the jetty, however, I've yet to see an image. The Port Jetty and Gantheaume Point have been quite popular with trevally and queenfish being caught. Willie Creek has been pretty good for cod and bream with a couple of flathead mixed in as well.
Exmouth catches
Riley Smith was trout and about on Peak Sportfishing Charters when he came across this stonking coral trout!

Boats

Fishers deep-dropping out wide have been rewarded with some nice ruby snapper and eight-bar grouper, while those slightly closer in have caught other tasty demersals such as red emperor and Rankin cod. Fishing for giant trevally has been hot near the islands with some very big red bass also being caught by those casting large surface lures in the area. Wahoo have been encountered in fairly shallow water towards the north end of the Muiron Islands. Longtail tuna schools have been providing fishers in the gulf plenty of fun, while spangled emperor have been caught in the lagoon.

Shore-based

Plenty of whiting and flathead have been caught along the beaches in the gulf. Squid have been caught both at the marina and Learmonth Jetty. Crabbing has been good towards the bottom of the gulf with both mud crabs and blue swimmer crabs being caught by fishers. Spangled emperor have been caught from many of the west coast accesses, while queenfish and small trevally have been caught near VLF Bay.

Fishing Extras - Kayaking options in the Exmouth Gulf

Glenn Edwards won't forget this fishing trip when he landed this giant giant herring off Wilderness Island!

Largely protected inside, the Exmouth Gulf offers an absolute myriad of shallow water fishing options for the prized sportfish southern angler dream of. If you're looking for some spots and details about how to target some iconic fish in these waters check out the article here!

Kalbarri catches

Boats

With the wet and wild weather, boats have been staying in the driveway. Hopefully next week the weather calms down and some great fish get caught!

Shore-based

It has simply been too wet and windy for people to be keen on heading out for a fish. That being said, there has been some good reports of sand whiting at the Sand Spit just recently. A few fishers have caught tailor near the river mouth and expect to see good numbers of mulloway over the next few days as the weather calms down.
Geraldton catches

Lancelin catches
Chris Hartanto fished on one of Peter Fullarton's Tailored Treks Tour last night and landed a small spinner, typical of this time of year in the region.

Boats

Not much to say about the boating this past week other than it looks fantastic for this weekend so get out there while the weather allows. Likely to be plenty of pink snapper along the inshore areas after the week’s storms.

Shore-based

There was some reasonable conditions to fish off the beach last Sunday, Tailor and small school sharks were encountered. The jetty offered a few more opportunities to wet a line, with herring and tailor veraciously feeding under the lights at night. The beaches have been heavily eroded leaving them steep, soft and narrow. Some good holes have been formed by the swells that should start to produce some mulloway and winter green backs as the fish move back inshore.

Esperance catches
Tyson TNT Tietjens has been making the most of the rough weather and decided to chase more black bream. His session started off a bit slow but got hot real quick resulting ln one solid bream after the other.

Boats

Not many boat fishers got out due to the large swells and prevailing winds making information this week very scarce.

Shore-based

Shore-based fishing hasn't been too bad, it has actually been quite good off the beaches! The storms made a few nice gutters. Good mulloway up to 10kg, small gummy sharks and some solid sized skippy have been caught at Roses recently. Closer to Hopetoun, there have been estimated 20kg plus mulloway getting caught alongside a few small bronze whaler sharks. Big garfish are getting caught off the Esperance Jetty along with plenty of squid. Wylie Beach, especially the first 500m stretch has been prolific for whiting and out the front of Stockyards have had some big "three metrey" flathead getting caught. Black bream around town have been on the bite with fish up to 45cm being caught.
Great Southern catches
Callum Dowell found a big one before the storm of the year rolls through. Using one of his Outback Breamer Bait lures, he managed to tempt this black bream.

Boats

Not many if any boat fishers have been out on the South Coast with this sort of weather. Hopefully with some better weather you all will have a chance to get out for a good fish!

Shore-based

Weather has been quite difficult earlier in the week with swells up and some pretty hardcore winds. That said, the calmer weather on Thursday and Friday morning saw some fish being caught. What the black bream in the Kalgan have lacked in numbers, they have made up for in size with a number of 40cm plus specimens being caught on small minnows and soft plastics. A few fishers have been targeting skippy at the Town Jetty with varying success and the odd cuttlefish as well. Nick Drummond spotted a massive school of salmon out at Back Beach in Bremer Bay. The drop in temperature might have made them a lot more prominent this week.
South West catches

Boats

A week of big swells has made it difficult to launch and impossible to safely leave the bay with a trailer boat. Today and tomorrow however, looks great with reports of pink snapper already in the 10-20m mark off Busselton coming in. Hopefully some great photos come through next week along with more detailed reports!

Shore-based

Shore-based fishing has been quite average but a few keen fishers did manage to get some solid captures. In Bunbury, bread and butter species such as herring and whiting have been caught around the Cut and the Floodgates. The Busselton Jetty has been covered in ink with multiple captures of squid being reported and the odd pink snapper hitting the jetty. Down South in Augusta, a school of herring was reported inside the Augusta boat ramp during the storm with most hitting anything from straw rigs to small halco twistys.

Freshwater

Giordano Gervasi caught big slob of a redfin perched for a nice photo. Good effort, mate!
Freshwater fishing has been a little slow this week with the weather causing water to flow super hard and dirty a lot of the streams. Those who know how to deal with these kind of conditions still managed to find some great trout and redfin perch throughout the South West. A few fishers did manage to land some nice brown trout landed from Drakesbrook Weir.
Mandurah and surrounds

Mandurah

Like most metropolitan beaches, the weather and swells has caused concern. Weed has also caused concern for beach anglers. The southern beaches have lost a lot of sand to the swells and care needs to be taken when negotiating these locations. Most angling activity has taken place from the rock and jetty platforms. Herring, skippy and sand whiting have formed the bulk of the catch. The Cut is a great spot to try for sand whiting, herring, skippy and tailor. Good sized King George whiting have been caught as well. Earlier in the week there were several smaller snapper taken from the ocean end of the Cut. In the river there has been some very good bream fishing with good numbers caught in both the Murray and Serpentine Rivers. There are still a few smaller tailor along the northern beaches along with tarwhine, skippy, whiting and herring.

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Point Peron has been producing plenty of tarwhine, herring and some nice sized tailor. Most spots around this region are producing herring, pilch, whiting and skippy. Becher Point beaches are producing herring as well as some good sand whiting. Land based anglers fishing from the Palm Beach jetty report good catches of herring and skippy and plenty of squid.
Perth catches

Boats

Not many if any fishers have been able to get out on the water due to poor weather over the last week. Hopefully today with the better weather we see some excellent pink snapper being caught being caught from the boats. With the calmer weather you might also have some luck landing some chucky tailor not too far from shore with the reefs north of Ocean Reef.

Shore-based

Shore-based fishers have had a really tough time as well with the swells over the week battering the rockwalls and beaches making fishing for normal bread-and-butter species very difficult. The Swan River has basically been dead quiet with the dirty water and heavy flow making fishing for anything a mission. Drone fishers have been dropping baits out to 150m out which rewarded them with some excellent pink snapper. Thursday night fishing had a few keen anglers targeting pink snapper off the rocks with some great success. Mindarie, Hillarys and Two Rocks were all packed with the fishers trying their hand to land a pinkie after the large storm over the week. Expect the tailor fishing to improve once the water starts to clear. Bread and butter species have been hiding inside the marinas and protected waters, there's been plenty herring inside the Mindarie Marina, providing families some great fun!
