August - November 2022

What a past few months it has been!  We have had an exceptional run of black marlin this year with numbers consistent right throughout the season.

We have been absolutely having a ball targeting these great gamefish with guests. Targeting them on the shallow sandflats and along Fraser Island is very unique and the only place in the world such an event takes place.

Through our decades of experience targeting the black marlin, we have refined our approach and are doing well not just hooking but landing good numbers consistently.

The size of the run this year has been interesting.  We have had fish from 7kg right through to 40 kg models - quite the variety.  Anglers have enjoyed a range of techniques from live baiting, casting lures, fly fishing, trolling and switch baiting.

Fly anglers have had a blast with switching from teaser to fly the best method to get the ultimate hook-up. We do cast at free swimmers and catch them also but the hook up rate is in the vicinity of 1 from 10 or even less where a switch can get much higher closer to 70 % .

The flashy profile fly developed by blue water fly fishing pioneer Dean Butler is the ultimate fly for billfish.

We may have some availability left this season for black marlin so if you are interested please be in touch.

We are now taking bookings for the 2023 Black Marlin season so be sure to book early and secure your bookings. A 2- 4 day trip is best to get in some great fishing and make the most of your trip with us.

Other species of late have included Spanish mackerel, queenfish, mac tuna, longtail tuna, giant herring, cobia golden trevally, flathead and more. As we move into the new year we will be targeting these species more on lure , fly and jigs as we move into our tuna season.

Top water action will increase and it wont be long before we are into our longtail tuna action which is a great time of the year. Flats longtails are fun and nothing beats catching them in the shallows.

We are taking bookings for 2023!  If you're interested in a booking please be in touch.  We look forward to hearing from you.

School Holiday Bookings
We still have some slots available for the summer school holidays so jump in quick for some new year fishing!

An absolute pleasure to guide long time client and friend Kotaro onto his first Marlin on fly on the flats of Fraser Island.

Pakula Lures and Tackle

We have had great success on the Peter Pakula range of trolling lures. These lures are world class and have been developed by Pete and have more world records than any other lure made.

If you are interested in buying some of his lures, you can purchase them online here
https://buypakula.com/

The packs are a great way to get into blue water trolling and Pete has some great YouTube tutorials on the site.

Check out the action from our DIY boat hire company, Gotcha Boat Hire.
Boat hire starts from $320 for a full day.
Great to see guests getting into the juvenile black marlin over the past month!

Guide Life

New Guide In Training

Introducing our newest guide Ben (Benno) Webster.
Benno is currently in training with us to become a guide with HBFSF.  He has completed his coxswains marine driver certificate and is also training extensively with the guides, soaking up as much as he can before he starts the 2023 season.
Benno has been a local in the Hervey Bay area for over a decade and is currently part time at BCF.
He is a keen angler and a thinker, with fish on his brain 24/7 we are can’t wait for guests to enjoy his enthusiasm for working out fish and getting those tricky ones to bite. His easy-going attitude and calm nature make him a perfect fit for our business and has fitted into the team seamlessly. Benno's knowledge of impoundment barra will also be a asset to the business, as we look to offer trips to local impoundments as a back up option in bad weather.
We wish Benno the best of luck and hope all our guests enjoy is company and learn a few tricks.

John Cross Takes Extended Leave

The time has come for our veteran guide to pack up his caravan and hit the road with his lovely wife Dianne.  John and Dianne are planning a 6-month trip around Australia, spending time with their new grandchildren along the way.  We have enjoyed and are thankful for John's hard work over the past few seasons.  Along with being a full time guide, John works hard behind the scenes repairing our rods, servicing our reels and helping maintain the boats.  We hope to see John return and continue a role in the business for the Marlin season in 2023, but we also know too well how good it can be once you hit the road!
So all the best to John and Dianne on your trip and it will be interesting to see where you end up!  Enjoy guys - well earned!

Justin Nye Joins The Team

Although Justin owns and operates a sister business in Gladstone - Gladstone Fly and Sportfishing- he is giving us a hand throughout the busy Marlin season and Christmas holiday period.
Justin and his family opted to hit the road in their caravan in 2023 for a bit of a gap year and travelling around the country while his guide Cory continues to run his business in Gladstone.  Justin will be with us until late January before he sets off on his big adventure.
Justin’s experience in Hervey Bay is vast with 2 decades spent fishing here before moving to Gladstone.  It has been great catching up and working with an old friend on a daily basis.   We have known each other since we were 16 and dreamt as young groms of guiding, and to be doing it the way we are now is something special.
Justin may return later in the 2023 season for the Marlin season along with continuing to grow our Bay to Barra package within his Gladstone business.
We look forward to many more years ahead working together between the 2 businesses.
