Broome catches
Was hard fishing around town in Broome this week with some massive tides causing havoc, but @good_dhu_dhu and @insalt_fishing ended up having a great threadfin salmon session recently. Stickbaits being trolled have also worked nicely around Dampier Creek.

Boats

An 80mm burst of rain has flushed a lot of nutrients into Crab and Dampier creeks, firing up the fishing activity. Threadfin salmon up to 90cm are in both systems along with plenty of blue-nosed salmon around 45cm, which are starting to become a welcome pest! Barramundi are also about with trolled Vertrex Max Vibes in 110mm size and Jackall Squirrel lures proving successful. North of town, Willie Creek is fishing well for salmon species and mangrove jack. Threadfin and blue-nosed salmon are plentiful in Roebuck Bay too, with the same lures doing the trick. Northern mulloway have been active in Roebuck Bay as well with the deeper holes producing 70cm fish, with favoured baits being a squid and fish-fillet combo or prawns. Bluebone to 50cm are being caught among the bay’s reefy structure and mud crabs have been taken at the Fingers. This week should see more decent boating windows so get out there!

Shore-based

The Town Beach jetty continues to surprise with a range of species, including smaller barramundi, blue-nosed and threadfin salmon, queenfish, cod and trevally species as well as bread and butter species such as bream and whiting. It’s also an easier jetty to fish than the main jetty because the tidal rush is not as intense and it’s a little lower to the waterline. The famous Port jetty and Entrance Point are fishing well for bluebone on low tide and queenfish and trevally species when baitfish are about. Barramundi reports have dried up from the Fitzroy River, but cherabin are still plentiful there. Expect the south-westerly wind to drop right back from Tuesday onwards, but it should be pleasant land-based fishing conditions this week. For the best tips and gear for your fishing expedition, make sure you visit the helpful pros at Tackle World Broome for advice and they will provide details on spots with the best access for a flick.
Exmouth catches
With 237 tag-and-released billfish, including 161 black marlin, 68 sailfish and two pending State and national queenfish and spangled emperor records — the 55th GAMEX fishing tournament in Exmouth once again lived up to its reputation as one of the premier fishing competitions in Australia! Click here to check out our full recap on GAMEX 2023 and the results!

Boats

GAMEX proved a big success this year with an average of 30 marlin per day tagged. Overall, there were 237 tag-and-released billfish, including 161 black marlin and 68 sailfish along with two pending State and national queenfish and spangled emperor records from one angler. You can catch our full recap and all results from GAMEX here. The billfish action hasn’t slowed at all since the tournament wrapped up either, with black marlin and sailfish being caught on trolled skirts and garfish baits in depths of 50-300m and out to 500m for blue marlin. Deep-droppers are also doing well in 300m on eight-bar cod, along with ruby and goldband snapper. The Muirons are fishing well for Spanish mackerel and on the bottom, red emperor and coral trout. Boaties trolling Halco and Nomad deep-diving lures at the back of the reef in 10-30m depths are also catching Spanish mackerel. Inside the Gulf, golden trevally are plentiful at the shoals and King Reef. Try fishing around the main structure of the artificial reef instead of directly on top and fish heavy if you want to avoid the taxman. It should be lower south-westerly winds for most of this week which should provide nice fishing conditions on the water.

Shore-based

Squid and whiting are at Learmonth Jetty, along with the odd queenfish and some 40-50cm school mackerel that are hitting small metals and vibes. Deeper in the Gulf at Bay of Rest, fly-fishers are catching queenfish and permit when conditions allow. In town, squidding has improved at the marina and bream, mangrove jack and small emperor species are a chance there. If you're chasing whiting, try the town beaches as numbers have been solid around there. There are plenty of baitfish at Bundegi which is fishing well for trevally species and queenfish in the early mornings and late afternoons. At the Lighthouse, spangled emperor are being caught on mullet-fillet baits and stickbaits. Mangrove jack and spangled emperor are worth a try at night at Tantabiddi. At Wapet Creek, there are mangrove jack and some small queenfish, while mud crab numbers are improving. Should be decent land-based conditions for the next week and big thanks to the crew from Tackle World Exmouth for their tips as always!

Kalbarri catches

Boats

Spanish mackerel averaging 15kg are smashing trolled Halco Laser Pros and Rapala X-Raps in 15-30m depths, providing plenty of fun for boaties putting in the distance on the water. A few Spanish mackerel have also been caught much closer in around the markers just outside the river mouth and there are plenty of bait balls offshore, with stickbaits cast to the edges of them producing good fish. The Sand Patch north of town is one of the better spots for the Spaniards, but sharks are starting to be a problem so make sure you use stronger gear and try having your lure trolled closer to the back of the boat to reduce the window of opportunity for the tax man. Tuna catches have tapered off unfortunately, but are still popping up every now and then. Boaties venturing up the Murchison River are snaring blue swimmer crabs but numbers are down. The next few mornings are looking best for the boaties but all of Saturday into Sunday morning should be pleasant on the water.

Shore-based

The Red Bluff to Wittecarra stretch has been reliable for tailor around the 40cm mark, plus a few dart and some big herring. A Spanish mackerel around 10kg was also taken at Wittercarra earlier this week. Bigger tailor over 50cm are being caught at Frustrations and Oyster Reef. When conditions allow, balloon fishers are catching Spanish mackerel and pink snapper at Wagoe. The best mulloway action has been at night in the Murchison River, with one fish around 15kg landed at the Marina Jetty along with plenty of bigger fish reported breaking lines. The river is also fishing well for small bream and cod to 50cm, while the Sand Spit is fishing well for yellowfin whiting. Big thanks to Dean from Kalbarri Sports and Dive for his tips as always and the mornings this week (especially tomorrow morning until around 11:00am) is looking great for land-based fishing so get out there!
Geraldton catches
Ben Svenson from @northern_addicts and @campbell.surts went hunting for big cephalopods around Geraldton and went home with more rings than MJ and Tom Brady combined.

Boats

Boaties giving Spanish mackerel and tuna one last crack before switching their attention to demersals from April 1 have been left disappointed unfortunately. They are finding plenty of bait balls, but nothing appears to be harassing them and trolling has been very quiet this past week. Squid are the most reliable quarry, especially along the Pages Beach to Point Moore stretch and in the 6-10m depths straight out from the Batavia Coast Marina. Most of the catches have been decent-sized hoods too, with 30-38cm hoods common and delicious feeds all around. Thankfully tomorrow until 5:00pm should see lower southerly winds, perfect timing if you're thinking of going fishing for demersals.

Shore-based

At the Geraldton breakwater there are lots of school whiting and later in the evening a few tailor. The north side of Batavia Marina had a few squid as well as chopper tailor and striped sea pike. Herring are in good numbers at the eastern breakwater, along with some big squid. Good-sized whiting have also been hanging around in great numbers at Pages Beach groyne. Tailor activity has been very quiet though, with the best catches coming from south of Greenough along with a few soapy mulloway. North of town, Drummonds Cove had heaps of smaller tailor, mostly under the 30cm legal limit but with the odd decent fish in the 40-55cm range. Big thanks to Geraldton Sports Centre for their report and Saturday is looking like the best land-based fishing window for the next few days.
Lancelin catches
The Fishing and Sand Driving Lancelin Facebook page is a good page to follow to keep up with the fishing action around town, including this nice land-based pinkie caught by Graeme Doodson and his son.

Boats

With Lancelin's FADs tipped to go in the drink over the next week or so, we'll make sure we keep you posted on when they are deployed and link their exact coordinates in here and on the FADs coordinates page on the Recfishwest website the moment they are out in the water! Lancelin Angling Club have the Commodore's Cup lined up this Saturday, which is expecting a good turn out with great weather forecast for the demersal season opening back up from April 1st. The previous week has seen a smattering of reports of various mackerel species being caught around the region and a return of some tuna schools offshore. Smaller boats have also been finding schools of squid around the bay on the drift. Herring have also been forming some big schools as Samson fish have returned to the nearshore reefs and have been marauding around the shallows, harassing the big schools of herring. Tomorrow should see nice easterlies but the southerly winds should return by Sunday arvo.

Shore-based

Jetty fishers have done well on tailor at sunset, while herring and skippy can be caught through the evenings. At times, the Samson fish have been coming into the jetty to chase accumulations of baitfish around the structure, so it's worth taking down a heavier rod and some larger lures to try and entice a strike if you see them. Beach fishers found it hard to get baits past hoards of tailor along the coast, with some specimens up to 55cm providing some great fights. Casting stick baits, poppers and metal slugs to reef breaks and gutters has been rewarded with some fat tailor and their sizes should keep improving throughout the autumn months. Saturday should have ideal easterlies for casting off the beach. Huge thanks to Peter Fullarton from Tailored Treks for his tips as always!

West coast demersal fishery opening up until July 31 – what you need to know

The February-March demersal fishing closure in the West Coast Bioregion ends on Saturday, April 1st and recreational fishers are to be congratulated for playing their part in helping the recovery of these fish during this time.
Fishers can now target bottom fish once again in the West Coast Bioregion from 1 April until 31 July. New rules now apply – you can check out these new rules on Recfishwest’s fishing rules app.

There are plenty of other great fishing options available in the West Coast Bioregion such as pelagics, squid, nearshore species etc. Consider spreading your effort and giving other types of fishing a go, rather than only targeting demersals every time.

If you want to know more information about the demersal fishery opening back up, along with FAQ's and tips on better stewardship for these fish, click here.

Esperance catches
This week @lachy_warren managed to reel in countless salmon off the Esperance beaches and still managed to land himself another nice gummy shark amongst the action. Most of the beaches around town have been firing for salmon, so make sure you get out there and submit your entries during the final month of the Salmon Slam!

Boats

Plenty of boats have been getting offshore in the calm conditions this week and bagging nannygai up to 3kg and good-sized breaksea cod in 35-120m depths. In the 200m depths on the continental shelf, big hapuka are being caught. Boaties fishing bommies at the islands are catching dhufish around the 10kg mark and plenty of pink snapper on the shallower limestone ledges. Tuna to 15kg are smashing trolled Black Magic Jetsetter skirts off Charley Island, which has been a very reliable tuna spot for a number of months now. Inshore, there are big sand whiting in 15-20m depths at Fourth Beach. King George whiting averaging 40cm are being taken at Lovers Cove and there are plenty of squid on the weed beds between the port and the bay. There should be more great boating weather between Sunday and Tuesday morning though so get out there!

Shore-based

If you enjoy your land-based fishing on the south coast, there is an important survey that we recommend filling in regarding vehicle beach access in the Shire of Ravensthorpe, this includes beaches at Hopetoun, Mason Bay and Starvation Bay. Given these areas provide great land-based fishing opportunities and may also be affected by the Government's proposed south coast marine park, your feedback on the survey link below will allow you to have your say to help protect these land-based fishing experiences in this region.

Click here to complete the Shire of Ravensthorpe Vehicle Access on Beaches Survey.

At Taylor Street Jetty there are skipjack trevally and King George whiting off the rock wall and big herring on dusk. There are plenty of squid at the Esperance Jetty, with white squid jigs working the best. The Esperance Jetty also had lots of garfish at night, which love following the lights into the shallows. At Fourth Beach, the middle carpark is a hot spot for salmon with fish schooling in a hole behind the reef. Gummy sharks are also plentiful at Observatory Beach and Roses Beach. School mulloway are also being caught at Thomas River in decent sizes. The incoming tide at Bandy Creek has been productive for flathead, with lightly weighted soft plastics working well. The weed beds at Wylie Bay continue to produce plenty of bread and butter species and a few salmon. Big thanks to the pros from Southern Sports and Tackle for their tips as always and Sunday through to Tuesday morning currently look best for land-based fishing.
Great Southern catches
Not unheard of on the south coast, but it certainly doesn't happen very often! Check out this lovely dolphinfish landed by @crookmatty_ recently during an awesome after-work session!

Boats

Good weather midweek finally enabled boaties to get out to the continental shelf where deep-dropping in 200-300m depths proved rewarding for hapuka and nannygai. Similar conditions are predicted for early next week and there should be some nice flat days on the water on both Sunday and Monday. Closer in, boaties have been getting small pink snapper and reasonable-sized King George whiting around the islands. It’s a similar story in King George Sound, with King George whiting in 8-12m depths and plenty of squid taking jigs on the drift and through the clearer waters. Herring are about in big numbers around the edges of weed beds especially when burley has been thrown around, along with a few skippy. Up river, a few bream have been turning up in good numbers around the sticks although mulloway catches have gone rather quiet recently.

Shore-based

Salmon catches continue to be sporadic, with big schools yet to be sighted with any consistency. A lot of salmon are being caught on mulies and fillet baits fished on bottom rigs cast over the breakers. Most spots are producing fish at certain times, including Cheynes Beach, Salmon Holes, Cable Beach, Sand Patch and Shelleys. Just about any rocky headland either side of town will produce a feed of herring when conditions are calm and burley is used, while skippy up to one kilo are being caught at the Tourist Rocks at Cheynes Beach. Squid, herring and smaller skippy are in the town marina and at Emu Point and Gull Rock. In the King and Kalgan rivers mulloway have tapered off, but bream are very aggressive, hitting small hard-bodied lures and Zman Grubz, particularly in the Motor Oil colour. Flathead and flounder are worth targeting in the Wilson Inlet. Sunday and Monday are looking ideal for land-based fishing and big thanks to the crew from Trailblazers in Albany for their tips!

South West catches
The Busselton Jetty has long been one of the most reliable squid spots in Western Australia and has been rock solid for catching a delicious feed throughout most of the year. Trudy Morehouse @squidqueen.wa showed she's the master at catching squid on the land as well, with the 1.9km long jetty having plenty of great spots to flick out a jig over the thick weed beds on either side.

Boats

The 15-20m depths off Binningup are fishing well for 40-45cm King George whiting, while boaties off Bunbury have found the KG's elusive, but have been landing lots of fat sand whiting in 15m depths. Squidding has been highly rewarding in Geographe Bay in a range of depths, with hood sizes from 25cm to the high-30s. Blue swimmer crabs in the Leschenault Estuary have slowed, but a few can be found in the deeper areas. Small boat anglers trolling in the Cut are getting tailor around the 35cm mark. It should be lovely boating weather across Saturday and Sunday, perfect timing for the demersal season opening back up until July 31.

Shore-based

Preston and Myalup beaches have been the best for tailor, with mulloway also a chance. Around Bunbury, the herring action is hot along the beaches and rocky headlands. The little scrappers are hitting small Halco Twistys and bits of green lumo tube being wound in under a blob (one of the all-time great tactics for catching herring dating back decades). Drone fishers have been doing well on pink snapper around the 70cm mark from beaches around town that have a bit of structure, especially Mindalong. In the estuary, netters have been wading out at night and scooping school prawns. Excitement is building on the salmon front, with big schools seen at Hamelin Bay and Yallingup this week and locals confident that the start of a great season is just days away for the South-West, perfect timing for easter. To quote the crew at Whitey's Tackle: "When the cabernet sauvignon is being picked at Margaret River, the salmon are in Geographe Bay." Get out there and enjoy the great conditions this weekend!

Freshwater

There are still plenty of rainbow trout being caught within the sticks down south and while the water levels have been relatively low and clear, stealth has been the key to landing nice yearlings and broodstocks. The pros from _sffac_ recommend watching pools with patience and quietly sneaking up before flicking a line in there as trout can be quite skittish and will spook if they spot or hear you working your way towards their position.
With high water levels and low water temperatures, freshwater fishing can be a challenge this time of year, but the deeper sections of dams such as Harvey and Wellington are worth a try for redfin perch using soft plastics or jigs. For trout, deeper tributaries that have year-round rapids, such as upstream in the Collie River, are worth a try for fly-fishers or those using spinners such as Mepps or Celtas. Most of the South-West dams have produced trout on the troll this week, with deeper vibes working nicely in 5-6m depths. If you're chasing trout in the creeks and river systems down south, try to use a bit more stealth as the shallow water levels means the trout are more spookish. If you catch any great trout or redfin, make sure you message us a snap of the catch to our Instagram page @recfishwest.
Mandurah and surrounds

Mandurah

The high tides in the middle of the day have fired up yellowfin whiting in the estuary, with Ecogear ZX vibes the favoured lure. Better spots are between the estuary bridges, the Dawesville estuary stretch and Mandjar Bay. The yellowfin whiting that were in good numbers at Melros and Falcon beaches have been replaced by sand whiting and herring. Low tides at sunset have made fishing from the shore more difficult, but better beaches for tailor are those around Golden Bay that have a bit of a drop-off. Drone fishers prepared to get up very early are doing well on pink snapper to 80cm at beaches south of town that have reef structure. Most boaties have been busy chasing plump sand whiting in the 22m depths behind the Five-Fathom Bank. The same depths have also been rewarding divers with crayfish. Crabbing in the estuary is hard work now, with sizes tapering off. It pays to move around for the blue swimmers and the best depths for them seem to be quite shallow from 1.5m right on the drop-offs. Big thanks to Tackle World Miami for their chunky report as always and both Saturday and Sunday should see great conditions aligning with the demersal fishery opening back up.

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Mangles Bay and Garden Island had plenty of squid, with shallow depths working best when the water is murky. When it’s been clear, a range of depths have been successful. King George whiting to 45cm are also plentiful on the broken ground around Garden Island and Windmills, with fresh squid the preferred bait. Some plump sand whiting are among them in good numbers. King George whiting and skippy are also at the Three-Mile Reef, along with small tuna that are hitting trolled lures. There are still a few crays around Rotto, which is where Samson fish can be burleyed up in 15-40m depths. In Warnbro and Cockburn Sound, a bit of burley will produce a feed of herring.

For land-based fishers around Rockingham, Challenger Beach and Secret Harbour are fishing well for tailor around the 35-40cm mark along with sand whiting, while mulloway are also a chance at high tide. At Long Point, there are tailor and herring while flathead, flounder and sand whiting are being caught at the Penguin Island spit. Rockingham and Palm Beach jetties produced herring and skippy during the day and tailor are taking small sliced lures around sunset. Mulloway have been caught from both jetties, so it may be worth putting out a big rod with a live or fillet bait. Big thanks to Compleat Angler Rockingham for their great tips and both Saturday and Sunday look decent for all forms of fishing.
Perth catches
@james4ncell and his family all had a cracking session out wide near the Fibrelite Boats FAD, with all family members hooking up to some stunning dolphinfish. These kind of pics are the ones we're after for the State-wide FADs photo competition, so make sure you get out to the FADs and take these kind of snaps with the FAD visible behind you to be in the running for great prizes awarded after May 1st!

Boats

King George whiting catches are very consistent on the metro reef systems – there are plenty at Rottnest in 20-25m depths, while the reefs off Marmion and Hillarys are holding good KG's as well.  At the FADs, tuna species and dolphinfish are in good numbers and in the 100m depths along the Rottnest Trench Spanish mackerel and wahoo are hitting deep-diving and skirted lures. The usual staples of sand whiting, herring and squid are being caught inside of Garden Island, while along the western side of Rotto yellowtail kingfish up to 8kg are hitting stickbaits. In the Swan River, boaties are doing well on big blue swimmer crabs with Mosman Bay and Blackwall Reach among the better spots. In the lower reaches of the Swan, tailor around 35cm are hitting trolled Halco Twistys and small Laser Pros. Thankfully this weekend is looking decent for the boaties so enjoy the conditions with the demersal fishery opening back up until July 31st.

Send us pics of your FADs catches for some great prizes!

To celebrate the great fishing opportunities at the FADs across Western Australia (more to come at Mandurah, Albany and Lancelin soon), we're giving away some quality prizes thanks to Richter Lures and Madfish Gear simply for catching a fish at any of the devices between 1 March - 1 May and sending in a snap of your fish!

Shore-based

Some fishers at the E-Shed have put their scaly mackerel catches to good use by using them as bait and landed several good fish around 15kg. Scalies are still plentiful, so expect more mulloway to hit the boards. Anglers have also welcomed the recent reopening of North Mole, which is always reliable for herring, skippy and chopper tailor. The same species are at South Mole, along with sand whiting and squid. In the Swan River, anglers using live river prawns for bait at night around East Fremantle have landed some very big yellowfin whiting, while anywhere in the Swan from the bridges up to Claremont and Point Walter is good for chopper tailor. Flathead and flounder catches seem to be tapering off in the lower reaches, but flathead along with soapy mulloway are turning up as bycatch for bream fishers in the upper reaches. Bream fishers using small sub-surface lures have also done well in the Canning River, especially when the conditions are still and glassy. There are tailor at Brighton Beach, while at night the inside of Hillarys Boat Harbour is a good spot for chopper tailor and decent-sized skippy. Big thanks to Anglers Fishing World in Fremantle and Hillarys Boat & Tackle for their great tips and both Saturday and Sunday look decent for land-based fishing in the Perth metro with easterly winds forecast.
