Fishing Report

Chasing some delicious squid rings? Not only are squid highly sustainable and fast-growing, but they also frequently congregate in numbers. As soon as one of you hooks up to a squid, the ink in the water from the fight frequently brings in their pals, so make sure another jig is tossed right next to the action to improve your odds of a double hookup.

Broome catches
@celestemcdonald managed to score her first ever pennant fish (also known as threadfin trevally) in the waters off Broome recently. This species is found in tropical waters worldwide and bigger specimens are considered one of the strongest-fighting fish in the trevally family. Photo credit: @reefchiefaustralia.

Boats

The approaching spring tides have made Roebuck Bay clearer and the water temperatures dropped by three or four degrees. The recent easterly winds have also made fishing easier after the cyclone, with nice sheltered conditions. Threadfin and blue-nosed salmon are fishing well within Roebuck Bay itself, along with tripletail which are among the debris floating around from the mangroves. Vibes and prawn baits are working best for the tripletail and flicking these towards any floating structure will improve your odds of a hookup. At Crab Creek, threadfin and blue-nosed salmon have not been taking lures with any gusto unfortunately and a bit of patience is required. Trolled Jackall Squirrels have accounted for both species of salmon and the odd barramundi there however. Spanish mackerel have been taken on the troll offshore and popped up in good numbers just out from Roebuck Bay. The easterly winds should stick around all weekend which should only clear up the visibility even better within the bay for the boats.

Shore-based

Anglers at Cable Beach were catching threadfin and blue salmon and whiting, more so in the afternoons as the winds tend to drop off and it’s the same story at Eighty Mile Beach. Trevally and queenfish are at Town Beach Jetty and the Port Jetty, with a few bluebone turning up in decent sizes at the latter when baits or plastics are flicked towards structure. Whiting are also being caught on Town Beach with a mixture of baits and small surface lures doing the trick. The easterly winds should stick around all weekend but next week is looking much calmer and flatter on the water. For the best tips and gear for your fishing expedition, make sure you visit the helpful pros at Tackle World Broome for advice and they will provide details on spots with the best access for a flick.
Exmouth catches
Of all the tasty specimens on offer in the pristine waters around Exmouth, Robinson sea bream are widely considered to be one of the best. This beauty was landed recently with the @onstrikecharters crew.

Boats

The aftermath of cyclone Ilsa has been limiting opportunities for the boaties, but those finding weather windows are doing well around the Muirons on Spanish mackerel and various tuna species, with trolling or casting stickbaits in 20m depths proving successful. In the Gulf, coral trout, blue-lined emperor and a few Rankin cod are the mainstays at present in 15-20m depths, while King Reef has also been fishing well for all species. Bigger charter boats fishing the western side were doing well on red emperor, Rankin cod and goldband snapper, but have found conditions mostly unsuitable for billfishing. Thankfully this weekend should see lighter winds and swell before they both pick up from Monday through to at least Thursday.

Shore-based

Saying it's been a busy week in Exmouth with tens of thousands of visitors chasing the total eclipse of the heart would be an understatement. For those hoping to escape the crowds, Wapet Creek has been very reliable for bream, whiting and flathead, even when the wind was howling, with a few mud crabs turning up as well. Down at Learmonth Jetty, squid and whiting are about, while small trevally and bigger queenfish are a chance at the end of the jetty for those throwing Halco Twistys or small stickbaits. The lighthouse and Mildura Wreck both produced bluebone, spangled emperor and the odd trevally and queenfish. Around the town marina, mangrove jack have been snaffling cubed mulie baits and estuary cod and bream were also about near the structure. This weekend should have decent land-based conditions for those thinking of a flick. Big thanks to the crew from Tackle World Exmouth for their tips as always!

Kalbarri catches
She's been fishing all across Western Australia and this Spanish mackerel for @jade_suzanne is just one of the many great species she's landed recently. Give her Instagram page a follow!

Boats

The clearer water in the 30m depths has been the starting point for boaties chasing pelagics. Skippers working their way in picked up Spanish mackerel and yellowfin tuna on the troll, with waters south of town generally seeing better results. Smaller tuna species and the odd bonito are also being caught from this region. Bottom fishers targeting areas near the cliffs have been doing well on pink snapper, cod and baldchin groper. The odd Spanish mackerel has come up on bottom rigs as well with many also turning up on the troll. South of town, baldchin groper and snapper are biting in 15-20m depths and the Three-Mile Reef also produced decent demersal species. The easterly winds should make the fishing quite pleasant for the boats this weekend with a spike in the wind and swell from Monday.

Shore-based

Inland rainfall continues to feed the Murchison River. While the water levels are high, it hasn’t slowed the mulloway bite. Good fish were being taken at the river mouth and off the Sand Spit in the evenings, with scaly mackerel and mulies the favoured baits. Bream and cod were biting at the marina jetty and mud crabs are still about. Red Bluff has been fishing well and producing mixed bags of 40cm-plus tailor, 30cm herring and big tarwhine, with whiting in the mix as well. Tailor and herring were also caught at Wittecarra. With the lower swells at the moment, Frustrations and Oysters are good bets for big tailor or mulloway and snapper are a chance from the gorges near town. Conditions this weekend look ideal for ballooning at Wagoe or Lucky Bay and the lighter easterly winds should make it pleasant for land-based fishing this weekend across the board. Big thanks to Dean from Kalbarri Sports and Dive for his tips as always!
Geraldton catches

Boats

It's been pretty tricky to find decent windows this past week unfortunately and not many boats cruised out. Big swells and windy conditions limited the boating activity, but with better conditions sticking around this weekend, boaties will be targeting dhufish, pink snapper and baldchin groper around the reefy grounds. Closer in and once the water is clearer, Point Moore and Pages Beach should fish well for squid and whiting. These areas should hopefully hold good catches with very low winds coming through around midday on Saturday and Sunday.

Shore-based

It was a better story for land-based fishers this week around town. Pages Beach, Point Moore and the sand bank near the entrance of the Fishing Boat Harbour fished well for whiting along with Drummonds Cove. Weed has been a hassle, but it’s a matter moving around until you find a clear patch. Herring were caught in front of the Sail Inn as well as whiting, plus quite a lot of pike and some tailor. The rock groynes between the boat ramp at Sail Inn and the marina were also good for herring in the evenings, while whiting turned up at the beaches near the marina. The beaches from Port Denison northwards held good mulloway between 80cm and 140cm. The bite time has generally worked better in the early evening, but weed has again been an issue. Healthy tailor in the 60-70cm range were caught from Seven Mile Beach and north of the Nine Mile to Wakeford Road at the southern end of Greenough. At West Bank there have been tailor and school mulloway, while north of town between Drummonds and Coronations mulloway were being caught when the beaches weren’t weeded up. It should be great land-based conditions this weekend though so get out there. Big thanks to Geraldton Sports Centre for their report as always!
Lancelin catches
Jayson Spencer @jspencer_fishing and Jeremy Cui @jez____ found some great ground off the coast of Cervantes this week and managed to pull in these two lovely dhufish with a slow jigging action. The demersal catches took a decent spike this week along the Mid-West coast, with good catches reported from Lancelin right up to Kalbarri.

Boats

There were some outstanding catches reported from the Perth Game Fishing Club competition off Jurien Bay this week, with this solid yellowfin tuna (pictured below) landed by talented artist Adam Ashdown @saltybonesgyotaku and a massive 250kg blue marlin that was tagged and released. Fishers heading west for demersal species have been mostly picking up a mix of dhufish and baldchin groper with reports of good catches through the 30m depths. Setting up on a burly trail inside the White Bank has found pink snapper and skippy. Squid have been well worth chasing along the inshore weed banks with some great catches and hood sizes over 35cm. The bay around Lancelin has also been a great spot to test your skills on light tackle, with some thumping skippy taking lures via trolling and casting, along with plenty of fat herring too. This weekend should see more decent boating weather so get out there before the wind and swell spikes from Monday next week.

Shore-based

Tailor have made a good turn around after the tap had turned off for a week or two. Fish are suddenly back on the bite, but a lot of larger fish full of ripe roe have also turned up, so just keep what you need and try to let the big breeders go. The challenge has been finding a weed-free spot after last weeks storm dumped a huge amount along the coast and beaches have been well fluffed up, catching a lot of 4WD's out leading to them getting very stuck in the soft sand. Remember to look well ahead when driving and cut into the back tracks if the beach looks too daunting. The snapper have moved back in close with some good catches off both the cast and drone. Mullet schools have been heading north where mulloway and Samson fish have been seen ambushing the schools. This weekend should be another cracker for land-based fishing but expect wild swell and winds from Monday. Huge thanks to Peter Fullarton from Tailored Treks for his tips as always!

FISH HANDLING TIPS AND HOW TO TAKE PERFECT FISH PHOTOS!

Photo tip: fish look so much more colourful and spectacular in photos when they are still alive. If you have ever wondered how to take snaps of your catch that look best for social media while reducing damage to the fish, check out our page detailing the best fish handling and photography tips for when you're out fishing on the boat or land!

As soon as you land a fish on the boat or land, it’s important to treat the fish with care and minimise the duration of stress resulting from direct handling.

If you’re wanting to take a snap of your catch, it’s also important to have the camera ready to go as soon as possible, especially if you intend on releasing the species, to help minimise the risk of damage to the fish.

We all love showing off our catch, but you can do it by being more respectful to the fish as well as making your fish photos look much better to those who view them if you decide to share them across social media.

Check out some of the tips for taking great photos of your fish!

Esperance catches
You can tell Tyson Tietjens @tnttietjens is stoked with this slab! This silver ghost was quickly released to fight another day near Esperance and we're glad to see he found the fish amongst the bombardment of weed!

Boats

Small boats in the bay have found good numbers of squid on the weed between the Port and the Town Jetty, with snook up to 1.5kg among them. At Lovers Cove there were plenty of King George whiting along weed bed edges and Rabbit Island has been producing decent blue groper. Excellent conditions boosted by a high-pressure system and midday tide change are predicted for the weekend, with locals suggesting fishos keep gentlemen’s hours and head out after the unpredictable northerly wind dies down. A hot pink snapper bite is anticipated with the big tides and other demersals should bite well up to the noon tide change. Samson fish and yellowtail kingfish should also be active. Saturday morning is looking best, with the winds increasing from Sunday through to Wednesday.

Shore-based

Squid have been running well and Taylor Street Jetty and the Town Jetty have been the hot spots, with red jigs fished at sunset producing squid with hoods of 40cm. Both jetties also had plenty of herring and there have also been good runs of garfish at the Esperance Jetty around 8pm. Bandy Creek had King George whiting up to 45cm along with plenty of sand whiting and flathead up to 50cm. For the flathead, fish the drop-offs on the outgoing tide and use soft plastics. Sand whiting to 30cm have been turning up at the start of Wylie Bay beach along with quite a few skippy. The excellent run of big mulloway continues east of town towards Israelite Bay and Alexander Bay has been a gummy shark hot spot. At Woody Lakes, bream to 40cm are hitting hard-bodied lures all day. Make sure you get out there this weekend with those lighter northerly winds forecast. Big thanks to the pros from Southern Sports and Tackle for their tips as always!
Great Southern catches
This happy salmon snap (and first ever salmon catch) from young Max Payne off Walpole took out best photo for phase three of the Salmon Slam and also scored Max a $250 Halco Tackle prize pack! There is still a best photo prize up for grabs for both phase four and the overall best photo so make sure you get out there! You can check out all winners from phase three of the Slam here!

Boats

After huge swells ruled out even fishing in King George Sound the past week, boaties have been stocking up on bait and gear for what promises to be excellent conditions over the weekend. Before the wild weather, King George whiting and squid were plentiful in the Sound, while around the islands bigger King George whiting and pink snapper were the mainstays along with the odd salmon. On the coral ground pink snapper, queen snapper and breaksea cod will be targeted over the weekend and bigger boats are heading to the continental shelf to tackle blue-eye trevalla, nannygai and hapuka in 200m-plus depths. It should be mostly easterly winds on Saturday, with northerly winds first thing Sunday morning.

Shore-based

Lower water temperatures seem to have pushed salmon schools closer to shore, with solid fish coming from Cheynes, Salmon Holes, Little Beach and Nanarup. Make sure you prowl the beaches and keep an eye out for deeper gutters, which can be found by looking for stretches of water lacking wave breaks. Having a scope on Google Earth for accessible beach spots is also handy. Herring and whiting have also been biting at Emu Point and at the town marina a bit of burley will bring in herring and yellowtail. Squid are a good chance around Middleton Beach and the King and Kalgan rivers have been fishing well for bream further up river around the structure. Big thanks to the crew from Trailblazers in Albany for their tips!

South West catches
He was catching fat and healthy salmon off the beach at Salmon Holes in Albany last week and this week @sw_anglers opted to catch plump mulloway off his yak in the Collie River. Give his page a follow!

Boats

Good numbers off dhufish were being caught in relatively close waters in mid-20m depths. Baits were working well, while boaties with good sounders have been doing well on slow-action jigs such as Vexed Dhu Slows and Ocean’s Legacy Contacts. Pink snapper have been plentiful too, with 10m depths around 4km or so off Bunbury working well. Anchoring and burleying up is one of the better methods for the pinkies, but pesky snook often muscle in on the burley trail. If you manage to catch a snook, they are decent on the chew and easy to fillet though. Live baits are accounting for many of the bigger snapper over 60cm. There have been plenty of squid in the clearer patches of Geographe Bay and on the broken ground King George whiting around the 40cm mark have been in good numbers. A feed of herring is almost guaranteed anywhere in the Bunbury Cut or Geographe Bay when burley is used. A few salmon have also been caught at both these locations, so it's worth flicking around a few lures and trolling. It should be great fishing weather this weekend so good luck!

Shore-based

Salmon are starting to spice up the fishing activity around the South-West, with good numbers of fish being landed at Smiths Beach, Yallingup Beach, Eagle Bay and Castle Bay in particular. In Bunbury, salmon are not quite as prolific, but Back Beach and Buffalo Beach are worth a crack. Salmon are starting to show up in the Bunbury Cut and along the harbour rock walls, along with herring and a few skippy. One of the recommended salmon lures this year is the Ocean’s Legacy Slingshot which casts a country mile and is ideal in windy conditions and big swells, with a range of colours for low-light and sunny conditions. The Sickbait from Richter Lures has also just been released and is another cracking salmon lure. Pink snapper have been caught at Preston and Myalup beaches, with drone fishers doing best but regular casters have been getting their share as well. Pink snapper and mulloway were regularly caught at the end of Busselton Jetty, with squid and herring also plentiful closer in. Dunsborough has also been a hotspot for pink snapper and the odd dhufish has been taken there as well. In the Collie River bream are hitting small mullet baits. Enjoy those nice land-based conditions this weekend and big thanks to the great team at Whitey's Tackle for their report as always!

Freshwater

Death. Taxes. Failing to walk out of Bunnings on a weekend and not buying a snag. Simon Holland @southernforests_angler catching impressive trout in our southern freshwater systems. All certainties in life.
Kayak fishers are doing well on redfin perch in the deeper sections of Wellington and Harvey dams with the recent cold front seeming to fire them up. The structure is where most of the fish like to school and tea bagging soft plastics up and down right next to the trunks is always set to find the fish eventually. Using snagless hooks is also recommended as it does make a big difference in reducing the number of lost rigs. Smak Ice Jigs are the lures of choice but try to cast or drop with care around the structure. With an improved flow, the Collie River is a good chance for trout at the moment. The best catches of brown and rainbow trout this week came from Lefroy and Big Brook Dam, where fly fishers reported great catches of broodstocks across a wide range of depths. If you catch any great trout or redfin, make sure you message us a snap of the catch to our Instagram page @recfishwest.
Mandurah and surrounds

Mandurah

Don't forget - thanks to the great crew from Tackle World Miami, they are giving away $250 worth of Richter and Nomad lures to the first fisher who catches a dolphinfish or wahoo at the Mandurah FADs! We haven't received a snap yet, so this prize is still up for grabs!

To win, all you need to do is:

1) Travel out to either of the two Mandurah FADs (coordinates linked below) and be the first to catch a dolphinfish or wahoo;
2) Take a snap of yourself holding your catch with the fish still alive, held horizontally, without fingers in the gills and with the Mandurah FAD where you caught it clearly visible in the photo behind you (winner will only be selected if they respect these rules);
3) Message the photo of your catch to the Recfishwest Facebook or Recfishwest Instagram page with your full name, details on how you caught your catch and the Mandurah FAD that you fished and stay tuned to see if you’re a winner!

To see the exact coordinates of the Mandurah FADs along with all other FADs in WA, click here.

The Peel district is living up to its reputation as the central hub for land-based pink snapper fishing, with any beach with decent structure producing for both drone fishers and casters. A good example is the reefy country south of Pyramids Beach and the key is to fish as close to the reef as possible. Pelagics have been fishing well with yellowfin tuna and wahoo hitting trolled deep-diving lures in 45m depths. Other tuna species have been about as well. This weekend’s good conditions are looking ideal for heading out to Mandurah’s two new FADs and it’s worth remembering boatie etiquette when out there, so not fishing right on the FADs when it’s crowded and trolling in the same directions as others. Elsewhere, dhufish around 50-80cm were caught in 20-25m depths and plenty of pink snapper turned up in 5-15m depths. Inshore lumps and the Five-Fathom Bank produced 50cm-plus King George whiting and the Five-Fathom Bank has been loaded with skippy, with Samson fish and yellowtail kingfish also showing up in the burley trail. The yellowtail kingies are very skittish and the trick is to fish a simple unweighted rig of a single hook buried in a cube of mulie on a fluorocarbon leader. Herring have been thick at the local beaches and also at the Cut. Next week is also likely to be the last of the good runs for those dabbing for prawns, while black bream were being caught around the pylons at the Mandurah bridges. Big thanks to Tackle World Miami for their chunky report as always and it's first in best dressed for the Mandurah FADs comp so get out there!

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Dhufish have been in good numbers and were in relatively close, with some caught in depths of 18m, but the 24-30m depths were more reliable with fresh squid and fillet baits favoured. Plenty of pink snapper were with the dhufish and sizes have been good. Offshore reefs like Stragglers, Coventry and off Warnbro are rewarding those casting stickbaits and unweighted mulies with chunky tailor around the one kilo mark. Activity at the southern FADs has been quieter, but yellowfin tuna and dolphinfish are being caught on live baits and stickbaits. Closer in, there were lots of skippy and herring, while squid were plentiful in varied depths when the water was clearer.

If you prefer to keep the sand between your toes when fishing around Rockingham, pink snapper have still been the main game and both drone and conventional beach fishers were getting amongst them. The better spots have been Woodman Point and around the grain terminal. Mulloway around the 10kg mark were also being caught at these locations and off the beaches at Port Kennedy, Secret Harbour and Madora Bay. Palm Beach and Rockingham jetties produced heaps of herring and a few squid, while mulloway are a chance at the latter spot after dark. There were herring and whiting at Long Point and the Penguin Island spit with some big flathead also among them. Big thanks to Compleat Angler Rockingham for their great tips and this weekend should see good conditions before a wind spike on Monday.
Perth catches
Gummy sharks like this nice specimen landed by @baz_98 are always a decent chance when soaking baits after dark off Perth and can provide a tasty reward for patient fishers. Photo credit: @nonstopfillets. If you're chasing this species in Perth, the rockwalls in Freo and around Cockburn Sound are great spots.

Boats

The 30-60m depths at the back of Rottnest has been holding plenty of dhufish and baldchin groper, plus lots of pink snapper which were also being caught in much shallower depths including the Three Mile Reef. Tuna species have also been turning up around Rottnest as well, with anglers trolling Richter Jelly Babes and Halco Laser Pros doing very well. They seem to be popping up all over the place, so just have your lures or skirts in the drink whenever you are cruising around Rottnest or off Perth for that matter as you never know when the reels will sing. Windmills has been fishing well for King George whiting in the 40-50cm range. Closer in, boaties have been finding herring, skippy and sand whiting along with squid on the weed banks. The inside of Garden Island in particular is always a reliable spot for squid as these sheltered waters host large weed beds. Try casting jigs along the outskirts of weed patches as squid will frequently dart out and target fish swimming along the sand. Small tailor are still being caught by anglers trolling in the lower reaches of the Swan River, while drop netters are having to work much harder for a feed of crabs. They are still turning up in the deeper regions around Claremont, Mosmans and Point Walter, although the cooling conditions will see this action start to taper off. It should be pleasant conditions on the water this weekend and don't forget - the FADs photo competition is still underway until May 1st, so make sure you send in a photo of your catch to our Instagram or Facebook page! Click here for FADs photo competition info.

Shore-based

The bumper run of pink snapper has shown no sign of slowing, with good fish being caught off rock walls and beaches from Mindarie all the way down to the moles. Better spots have been Quinns, Hillarys and North Mole. Impressive by-catches included mulloway around the 10kg mark and Samson fish. Oily fish baits seem to be getting the best results on all three species. North Mole has also been fishing well for big tailor and both moles produced plenty of herring. Squid are at North and South moles but the South Mole has once again been more consistent for them. Good-sized tailor have come from the Cottesloe to Trigg stretch of beaches and reefs at both dawn and dusk. Chopper tailor are still being caught in the Swan River, but sizes are tapering off and most fish are between 25-30cm. Anglers wading for flathead around Mosmans and Claremont are finding the pickings are slim, but those using vibes have been catching yellowfin whiting around the 20cm mark as a consolation prize. Bream fishing was steady rather than spectacular this week, with spots up river from the Causeway the best bet. Prawn and mullet baits are working well for bream, while anglers fishing for them with hard-bodied lures are catching soapy mulloway up to 70cm. Both mornings this weekend are looking pleasant for land-based metro fishing. Big thanks to Anglers Fishing World in Fremantle and Hillarys Boat & Tackle for their great tips!
