Gale-force winds from the south of 40 mph or more are forecasted after midnight and into Tuesday morning before a switch to northwest should knock down the resulting big seas. As a result, Capt. Bobby Bogan has changed his weekly Tuesday tautog trip to Wednesday this week on the Gambler from Point Pleasant. He'll be back to codfishing on Thursday. Bogan said Sunday's trip to wrecks 40 miles offshore was similar to the previous Sunday's -- a good start followed by a slow pick. Mike Malpass of Point Pleasant and his brother Tim from Brick combined for 12 cod and six ling.
Capt. Joe Bogan said there was better ling fishing plus some cod over the weekend on his Jamaica II from Brielle. He's scheduled to sail Wednesday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. -- and Saturday from 3 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Greg Bogan reports from Brielle Tackle that a 27-inch striper was hooked on a Storm lure at the Mantoloking Bridge during a recent evening. Flounder fishing has been good, and Steve Fritts of Point Pleasant weighed a 2 1/2-pounder that hit a sandworm. Herring are hitting Sabicki rigs in Shark River Inlet.
Adler dies at 51: Sad news today was the report of the sudden death of ex-Representative John Adler (D-NJ) of a heart infection at just 51. Adler became a friend of sportsmen as a state senator before winning election to succeed the retiring Jim Saxton. He was endorsed at that time by the N.J. Outdoor Alliance. Adler attended last fall's Jersey Coast Angler's Association Sportsperson of the Year Dinner. His primarily Ocean County district returned to its usual Republican leanings when Jon Runyun took Adler's seat in the last election.
