It was no slaughter, but Capt. Stan Zagleski at least had a showing of blackfish during his first trip offshore this spring with Elaine B. from Highlands. There was a good crowd aboard Sunday, and they picked some tog along with a few cod in 80-foot depths. A large swell and strong current hurt fishing at first. Zagleski made an inshore drop on the way in, but there was no life in shallower waters. He'll be shaping up daily for blackfishing.
Capt. Bobby Bogan will be making his weekly Tuesday tautog trip with the Gambler from Point Pleasant. He had a decent pick of cod up to 10 pounds Saturday plus some ling and three tautog. Sunday started well with cod and ling, though fishing dropped off after noon. Bruce Nobel of Brick won the pool with a 14-pound cod, and combined with his brother for six cod and four ling.
Betty & Nick's Tackle in Seaside Park made it three days in a row with a striper weigh-in on clams from Island Beach State Park when Chery Latuala of Brick brought in an 11 1/4-pounder Sunday.
Allen Riley of South Plainfield and Duke Matero from Piscataway tried to break the ice with stripers at Sandy Hook this morning, but there was no life in the surf.
Small boat pros David and Phil Fischer fished Shrewsbury River on Sunday to catch a 29-inch striper plus three legal winter flounder.
Capt. Ron Santee of the Fishermen at Atlantic Highlands said the last two days of striper fishing have been tough. He checked the ocean again today, but there was still no sign of that surprise jigging run we had at this time last year. Santee retreated to the bay and managed one keeper bass plus two shorts.
