Fishermen looking for a striper boat at Atlantic Highlands this weekend won't have to look far. With the Fishermen, Sea Hunter and Prowler already doing their usual spring thing, they're joined by the Sea Tiger II, Atlantic Star and the Angler.
Capt. Tom Buban switched from half-day flounder to half-day stripers on Monday, and had a couple of limits on the Atlantic Star. He'll be running the Easter Sunday morning trip only. Flounder fishing never turned on this spring. Buban's best day was last Wednesday with 15 flounder in Shrewsbury River. Those caught were large, with hardly any shorts -- and there's been no sign of a run in the bay. Buban thinks the abundance of seals in the river may have been the biggest problem as they had nothing else to eat over the winter.
Capt. George Bachert will run offshore with his Angler on Thursday, and then switch to stripers Friday.
Capt. Rob Semkewyc said there were striper limits caught aboard his Sea Hunter both Sunday and Monday, with a boat limit Monday.
The Jamaica from Brielle didn't get out for stripers over the weekend, but will sail for them Thursday at 7:30 a.m.
Greg Bogan reports from Brielle Tackle that flounder are biting in Manasquan River, and short blackfish are being hooked in Point Pleasant Canal.
Joe Melillo at Castaway's Tackle in Point Pleasant had a similar report, but noted that two legal tautog have been brought into the shop from the canal so far. He said flounder action has slowed in Barnegat Bay, but short stripers are hitting small jigs and plugs in the canal at night. Bob Caracozza fished his boat in the canal to plug nine bass from 22 to 29 inches on the Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnow.
Melillo had an unconfirmed report of big bass on bunkers by a boater off Spring Lake on Monday, but Capt. Arthur Stokes was actually out there prospecting with his Fintastic from Clarks Landing in Point Pleasant -- and said he was all alone. Some fish were marked, but he and Capt. Chris De Stefano of Wall jigged and tried trolling both bunker spoons and shad rigs without a hit. Stokes has set up an open striper trip for May 9 -- when they'll almost surely be available along the Shore.
Adam La Rosa is offering individual early season canyon reservations (as well as reduced charters) on the 48-foot Canyon Runner with Capt. Mark De Blasio for $725 a man. He said 80 percent of their tuna last year were caught from June to August, rather than in the fall. Call him at 732 370-7688.
