Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
Rocky River was named one of the “150 Best Places to fish in America” in the June 2007 issue of Field and Stream magazine The Rocky River is exhibiting elevated and muddy conditions again this week, and doesn't look to get better anytime too soon based on the projected weather forecast. This timing is unfortunate, as this is one of the best times of year to fish for steelhead, stocked trout, and Lake Erie run smallmouth bass in the river. Anglers can keep their fingers crossed and monitor the trend in river flow and temperature at the following link: Mother Nature was not kind to local steelheaders this spring! At this point, with the river still being elevated and more rain on the way, any remaining steelhead opportunties will be crammed into a small window. A few folks are out trying to catch a steelie in the muddy water. If you decide to try your hand at fishing while the river is still elevate and stained, dams and fords, where fish concentrate, are good bets. Also, a nickel to quarter size brightly colored egg sack is a good bait choice, as are large, bright eggs pattern flies and larger bright, black, or contrasting colored streamers. Keep an eye on the flow gage, too, because if the river continues to drop we may have good opportunties into the weekend. Monday Wallace Lake was stocked with 750 pounds of rainbow trout on Monday because the river conditions were not favorable. At this time it's most likely that the final stocking may be early next week. Those fish will either go into the river or, likely, Shadow Lake since the Village of Oakwood has a children's fishing event coming up there on May 7. Keep posted to the fishing report for details on that. The Ohio Division of Wildlife (DOW) recently stocked Hinckley Lake (2,500 trout) and Shadow Lake (500 trout), and Cleveland Metroparks stocked Ledge Lake with trout recently and has heavily stocked Wallace Lake on six occasions from winter through spring. Trout have been biting well this week on Power Bait in brighter colors, small jigs tipped with grubs (maggots or waxworms) under a small float, and small spinners. Before the river muddied, a number of anglers were catching lake-run smallmouth bass while fishing for steelhead. Live bait and tube jigs in white (look like a minnow) or dark olive/brown (look like a goby) are good bets fished in the deeper, rocky pools. Please keep in mind that the Rocky River smallmouth fishery is reliant on a self-sustaining population, so please consider carefully realeasing the larger smallmouth, in particular, since they are in the river to spawn. Thank you to Ohio Central Basin Steelheaders. Thank you very much to OCBS for supporting the Cleveland Metroparks Fishing Fund with a $1,500 donation. We are greatly appreciative of the longstanding relationship between OCBS and Cleveland Metroparks, which ranges from volunteer support for kid's fishing event and stream clean-ups to monetary donations. In addition, this club has some of the most experienced steelhead anglers in the state in its membership, so newer steelheader anglers looking to learn or just make some new like-minded fishing buddies may consider looking into joining: www.ohiosteelheaders.com If you have a photo that you would like to contribute to the fishing report, or if you have any further questions regarding fishing in the Cleveland Metroparks, you may contact Aquatic Biologist Mike Durkalec at (440) 331-8017 or md@clevelandmetroparks.com . Good fishing, Mike Robert caught these large trout while fishing Wallace Lake with his father on Tuesday. Scott caught this beautiful 10.25 pound buck steelie in the Rock before the river muddied (photo courtesy of Scott Palmieri). Reion caught this trout at Wallace Lake on a pole borrowed from, and rigged by, his brother Robert which sparked the debate of who gets the credit for this fish!? We'll say 50/50 split! Joe (top) and PJ (below) had some great fishing on the Rocky before all the rain. PJ also took the cool underwater photo of a spawning steelie (photos courtesy of PJ Filipowicz at therockyriver.com).
Jaysin caught this limit of trout at Shadow Lake last week. Please note, the trout limit varies by location: it is five per day at Shadow Lake, Hinckley Lake, and OEC fishing area; three per day at Wallace, Ledge, Judges, and Ranger lakes; and two per day in the river currently (photo courtesy of Jaysin Slawinski).

Jason Dillinger sent in the photos above of a few fly patterns and a jig that work well in dirty water for him. Note the use of bright, dark, and contrasting colors that make them most visible in limited water clarity (photos courtesy of Jason Dillinger at www.pulsejigs.com).
Adam shared this photo of a fine brown trout he caught in Pennsylvania on opening day of the trout season. He caught a whole bunch of trout on this trip (photo courtesy of Adam Zakarowsky).
