OUR NEW 'TIPS FOR AVOIDING SHARK BITE-OFF' WEBPAGE!
Want to help reduce the odds of your fish ending up in a shark's jaws? Our new webpage has all the tips you need from tackle stores, charter operators and professional sportfishers on reducing shark-bite off and landing more fish in the boat.

All around WA and particularly heading north of Geraldton, a lot of fishers know the frustration of losing prized hooked fish to sharks.

While sharks might have 400 million years on us regarding perfecting hunting fish in the ocean, losing high volumes of high value species to shark bite-off is avoidable.

Recfishwest has reached out to many experienced fishing experts, charter operators and top sportfishers who have great tips below on how to best limit if not avoid shark bite-off – and profanity-riddled fishing trips. This includes what to do when bottom fishing or trolling, how to spot sharks on your sounder and info on repellent devices.

CLICK HERE TO CHECK OUT OUR NEW TIPS FOR AVOIDING SHARK BITE-OFF WEBPAGE!

Broome catches
Skilled sportfisher Chris Tanti who skippers the Broome Billfish Charters aboard Billistic topped off a great week landing sailfish by finding two solid bucks in the shallows close to Broome.

Boats

It was a fairly decent week for the boaties venturing out of Broome. Catches of red emperor have been decent in 40m depths, while the 20m depths held good numbers of coral trout, blue-lined emperor and bluebone. North of town has generally been good for Spanish mackerel with trolling in 5-25m depths producing good results. If you’re finding sharks are a problem when trolling, try holding the rod and have your lures closer to the back of the boat to react faster. If you hook up to a fish and a shark is hot on its tail, try free-spooling your rod and letting the fish outrun the shark before chasing it down in the boat. If you are after loads of tips on how to avoid shark bite-off though, there is a new page on the Recfishwest website that has every tip and trick you need to know from charter operators, tackle stores and professional sportfishers in our State’s north so make sure you check that out by clicking here. As for threadfin and blue nosed salmon catches, Crab Creek and Roebuck Bay around the Fingers have been fishing well but in the rest of the bay, northern mulloway and tripletail action has tapered off. We didn’t hear much on the barramundi catches this week and they dropped off a bit around town as well, but further up Crab Creek was productive. It’s going to be strong easterlies for a majority of the next four days but the winds should start to die down from about Wednesday.

Shore-based

The Town Beach Jetty has been producing trevally, queenfish and heaps of grunter. The Port Jetty has also held trevally and queenfish too and metal slices have definitely been the go-to lure of choice. The rocks around Entrance Point have been productive for bluebone, queenfish and trevally. Barred Creek and Willie Creek saw mangrove jack, trevally and a few blue-nosed and threadfin salmon. Trevally catches have been on the up at Quandong Point, while Coconut Wells and Cable Beach have fished well for whiting. Threadfin salmon numbers have been reasonable at 80 Mile Beach while in the Fitzroy River good barramundi catches have been reported from Telegraph Pool, Langies and The Cuttings. For the best tips and gear for your fishing expedition, make sure you visit the helpful pros at Tackle World Broome for advice and they will provide details on spots with the best access for a flick.
Exmouth catches
Easily one of the most stunning sailfish snaps we've seen. This spotted beauty was snapped by Wes Jones @snipes1089, captain of Peak Sportfishing in Exmouth.

Boats

After a windy start to the week in Exmouth the conditions have improved on the western side, especially for pelagics. Dolphinfish to 8kg have been caught in as little as 20m depths but the preferred depths for both dolphinfish and good numbers of black marlin have been 60-100m. Wahoo have been about as well, but their numbers have dropped slightly. In depths of 100m goldband snapper, cod and rosy jobfish have been caught and boats have headed even further out to 200m-plus depths for ruby snapper and bass grouper. Around the islands, fishing has been reasonable for spangled emperor, Rankin cod, coral trout and red emperor along with Spanish mackerel, but sharks have been a problem so moving around frequently is a must. Make sure you check out the new tips for avoiding shark bite-off webpage as there are loads of great tips on there for avoiding big bad Bruce. In the Gulf, anglers have found themselves outgunned by big golden trevally, huge cod and cobia around the shoals and King Reef, but have had better luck on small to medium-sized Spanish mackerel, queenfish and trevally species. Closer inshore, the squid fishing has been as good in as little as 2m in the weedy patches off the Town and near the Golf Club beaches. Mornings are looking decent this week with the easterly winds tending to increase around midday.

Shore-based

For Exmouth’s land-based fishers flathead have been in good numbers off all of the local beaches, while whiting catches have slowed. At Learmonth Jetty along with flathead there have been good numbers of squid and bream. The Town Marina has held a heap of species recently, including bream, mangrove jack, cod, blue-lined emperor, spangled emperor, queenfish and trevally, so that’s a great spot to have a crack. Way down south at the bottom of the Gulf, Shallow Water Safaris have been putting fly-fishing and lure-casting clients on to giant herring, wolf herring, trevally and queenfish. At Bundegi the hardyhead schools have been attracting trevally and queenfish, while Tantabiddi has also had the same species plus blue-nosed salmon and the odd spangled emperor. If you are chasing spangled emperor, they are generally always the main catches around the Lighthouse and Mildura Wreck, along with the odd bluebone. At Wapet Creek, mud crab catches have improved with some large bucks doing the rounds in the shallows. It should be quite pleasant conditions for fishing in Exmouth this week and big thanks to the crew from Tackle World Exmouth for their tips as always!

Kalbarri catches

Boats

South of town boaties trolling along the cliffs towards Wagoe have been doing well on Spanish mackerel around the 15kg mark. Old-favourite lures such as Halco Laser Pro's and Rapala X-Raps have proven successful with their deeper dives and great vibration under the water, as have trolled garfish baits. Dhufish catches have greatly improved over the past week on both sides of town and while they do turn up occasionally off Kalbarri (and even as far north as Shark Bay on rarer occasions), their spike in numbers took a lot of boaties by surprise this week. The 30m depths have generally been a good starting point and along with the dhuies, plenty of baldchin groper, pink snapper and cod have come over the side making it a productive week for demersal catches. The conditions are looking great for the rest of the week too so make sure you get out there!

Shore-based

The Murchison River has continued to fish well for mulloway as far upstream as Castle Rock. Among the better spots have been the Sand Spit and the river mouth, as well as the marina jetty and the rocks just up river from there. Bream catches have been solid along with cod and a few mangrove jack. Mud crabs have also been about around the same areas. Chopper tailor were common around the river mouth and with the clearer water, yellowfin whiting have been caught from the Sand Spit on small surface lures and soft plastics. Frustrations, Oysters and Chinamans have produced tailor and the odd mulloway. The cliffs around Pot Alley Gorge and Red Bluff have also fished well for pink snapper with some bigger sizes rolling through. Pink snapper have also been caught at Wagoe where balloon fishers have done very well on Spanish mackerel. Mackies have also turned up in great numbers at Lucky Bay. Around Wittecarra there have been tailor, herring, dart and tarwhine with mornings fishing best. Enjoy those glassy conditions and easterly winds this weekend and big thanks to Dean from Kalbarri Sports and Dive for his tips as always!
Geraldton catches
Not a bad by-catch while chasing whiting in the shallows off Geraldton! This lizard was landed by Leigh alongside Nicki Hunt @nickihuntfishing.

Boats

Demersal reports remain hard to come by but the African Reef – a renowned dhufish location – has attracted plenty of boats. The boats that are fishing this location however have generally remained secretive about their catches (probably a good sign there). Dinghy fishers have been very active and have done well on squid of all sizes. There have been quite a few with 30cm hoods and one absolute monster with a hood of 50cm that would have rocked the boat. Waters north of the Batavia Coast Marina have been popular with squidders there reporting big snook have been taking their squid jigs. Dinghy fishers targeting herring have done well at Point Moore, Separation Point and Explosives, along with north Drummonds to the Buller River mouth. It is mostly moderate to low easterly winds with a swell of around 1.2–1.6m this weekend so it should provide decent boating windows.

Shore-based

Geraldton has experienced some of the best whiting catches seen in recent years with the fish widespread and ranging in size from 20cm up to 35cm. Good catches have come from Southgates, Tarcoola and Separation Point, although weed has been a factor there sometimes. The protected beaches north of the Batavia Coast Marina up to the Buller River mouth and in the bay at Coronation and around Point Moore has also fished particularly well. Tailor have been very hit-or-miss with no reliable spot this past week. Mulloway on the other hand have been caught in big numbers with sizes from 8-18kg. Lucy's Beach has fished very well for them as has Flat Rocks, but weed has again been a problem there at times. More good mulloway have come from West Bank and from north Drummonds to Coronation Beach. Drone fishers from Coronations up to Port Gregory have done well on pink snapper, but sharks have been a real challenge, pinching baits before snapper can get to them. The best land-based squidding has been from the north wall of the Batavia Coast Marina. In the absence of tailor, pike have been caught from the usual tailor haunts. Those easterly winds should aid with the beach casting this weekend and big thanks to Geraldton Sports Centre for their report as always!
Lancelin catches
Gordon Jolly had his heart set on a mulloway when he flicked out a whole herring, this 90cm pinkie had other ideas! Another great catch courtesy of Peter Fullarton's Tailored Treks tours!

Boats

Early in the week boats were reporting the demersal fishing as slow offshore, but as the week progressed the fish have come alive on the bite. The 25-35m depths had plenty of baldchin action on the flats intermixed with lots of cuttlefish, with some boats landing as many as half a dozen cuttles during their demersal session. Dhufish numbers have been best along the lumps out from 35m depths. Smaller boats were having success burleying up for skippy and pink snapper along the inshore reefs. Inside the bay, squid catches have been decent and there has been a good mixture of fish species caught with skippy, herring, tarwhine and some stonker flathead featuring in bags. This weekend is looking glorious for the boaties though with a lower swell and calm winds, enjoy yourselves!

Shore-based

Mulloway are a chance along all the region's beaches at the moment, with reports coming of fish being landed in the 10-20kg range on most nights, along with the odd shark or snapper. The beaches are also fishing exceptionally well for plump sand whiting. While tailor catches have dwindled off to next to no bites at all, those trying have managed to score some ripper flathead on ganged mulies, slices and stickbaits. Plenty of holiday makers have been gathering a feed of herring quite easily each evening from the jetty and some good hauls of squid have been gathered. Fisheries are currently monitoring fishers for undersize skippy, tailor and snapper here too so make sure you do the right thing and freshen up on the bag and size limits within the Recfishwest app. Will be fantastic land-based fishing conditions this weekend though so make sure you get out there. Big thanks to Lancelin's fishing guru Peter Fullarton for his tips and make sure you check out his Tailored Treks fishing tours if you want to be put on to the fish.

Esperance catches
Kings of the south coast! Lachy Warren @lachy_warren went toe to toe with some thumping fish this week off Esperance. This yellowtail kingie was in the mix with some chunky Sambos close to the islands. Hope that back of yours is recovering well Lachy.

Boats

Lots of boats having been making the most of the ideal conditions this past week with some substantial catches reported. Demersal species have been firing with one boatie landing a 12.5kg dhufish and a second dhuie also over 10kg. Nannygai have been plentiful as well with fish up to 66cm caught. The best depths for both species have been 40-60m and jigs have tended to outfish baits, with Vexed Dhu Slow in the 140g size and Ocean Legacy Hybrid Contacts in 200g size being the stand-outs. Samson fish have also been plentiful, with a thumper 26kg model taken on light gear, along with yellowtail kingfish including one whopper that went an estimated 25kg. At West and Fourth beaches tinny fishers targeting sand whiting have tangled with gummy sharks up to 17kg. With the cooler water temperatures sand whiting have been in abundance at these spots with most anglers finding it easy to get a feed. Pink snapper have also been in good numbers with healthy 2-3kg pinkies coming from the inshore reefs in sub-30m depths. There have also been plenty of squid in Esperance Bay in 4-5m depths and at Cook Rocks, with drifting working nicely there. At Wylie Bay tinny fishers have done well on King George whiting. The westerly winds and swell are picking up this weekend but the calmer northerlies and swell should return on Monday morning and into Tuesday evening.

Shore-based

The Town Jetty has been holding herring, squid weighing more than a kilo and big garfish at night. Baits on very small hooks fished under a small float have been the most effective way to catch gardies, but quite a few have been caught in the shallows of Esperance Bay after being stunned by a spotlight and then scooped up in a landing net. At Taylor Street Jetty the sandbar off the rock wall has been a hot spot for skippy up to 40cm and the odd King George whiting. The KG's have been in better numbers at Bandy Creek Harbour, but most are barely over the 28cm legal size limit. Further out of town shallower beaches such as Rossiters and Thomas River have been holding 65-75cm mulloway, while deeper beaches like Poison Creek, Dunns and Alexander Bay have fished well for gummy sharks. Huge numbers of salmon have been at Alexander Bay and Dunns this week too, smashing baits and a wide range of lures. There has been a good run of tailor up to 60cm at Roses Beach, while back at Bandy Creek Boat Harbour kids fishing from the rock walls have been having a ball casting mussel vibe lures under the hulls of boats for bream up to 43cm. Big thanks to the pros from Southern Sports and Tackle for their tips as always!
Great Southern catches
There are still plenty of deep gutters close to shore on the south coast housing some fat and healthy salmon. Ash Ramm from @tackle_world_miami hit the road with his family recently and proved the southern WA beaches are hard to beat.

Boats

The Albany Boating and Offshore Fishing Club’s Southern Ocean Spectacular was held last weekend with many boats doing well on demersals species on the coral ground but others finding little action in King George Sound and around the islands despite the calm conditions. The coral ground has been pretty hit or miss even in the good conditions offered last weekend, with many locals saying conditions were a little too calm. Nevertheless, some excellent catches were recorded by a lucky few including nannygai, queen and pink snapper, breaksea cod and quite a few dhufish, some over 10kg. The better depths for dhufish seemed to be the 70-80m depths. Many boats fishing in 50-60m depths were plagued by juvenile snapper. A few salmon have been taken around the islands, while boats trolling along the headlands have picked up various tuna species. In King George Sound there have been good and bad days for King George whiting but more consistent catches have come from the 12m depths off Gull Rock and Caseys Beach. These spots have been reliable for squid too and it's always worth having a crack for squid then using their tentacle strips as fresh bait for the KG's. There have been plenty of herring throughout the sound and a couple of handfuls of burley usually brings them in within a few minutes. Some moderate westerly winds will stick around this weekend but it is expected to swing around into lower northerly's on Monday.

Shore-based

The best spots for salmon this past week have been Salmon Holes, Shelley Beach and Lowlands. Of course Cheyne’s Beach is always worth a try, but it hasn’t been as consistent as past years and it is worth moving around to different beaches in that area using 4WD access to scope out if any schools are in close. Emu Point has been holding herring , skippy and a few King George whiting, while the Town Jetty has been holding herring and the odd skippy. Squid have been caught at both these spots too and also at night at Middleton Beach Jetty, but a better spot this week has been off the rocks in Frenchman Bay. The hot squid jigs this month are Shimano Sephias in UV white and Harimitsu Sumizoki Lemon Specials, which have both been solid for reeling in good numbers of the cephalopods this week. Bream have been biting in the King, Kalgan and Hay rivers but sizes are nothing special, while the mouth of Torbay Inlet has been a hot spot for juvenile salmon, King George whiting and bream. When it’s safe to fish, Samson fish have been caught off the stones from West Cape Howe, but make sure you wear a lifejacket and fish with a friend if venturing down there. Big thanks to the crew from Trailblazers in Albany for their tips!

South West catches
The trusty Busselton Jetty has once again produced more evening silver slabs this week. Daniel Liuto @dansfishin_southwest landed this 119cm, 15kg specimen about 400m along the structure. Soaking baits off the longest pier in the southern hemisphere (1,841m) during winter is always a good bet for big mulloway, pinkies and Sambos.

Boats

Squidding has been great generally heading south out of Bunbury, along with around Busselton and within Geographe Bay. On the Bunbury side of things, white and yellow jigs have been very effective. Depth has not really been a factor, it’s more a case of looking for reefy weed. Pink snapper catches directly out from Bunbury and west of Busselton have been excellent in depths from 8m out, which in a lot of places is just 800m or so offshore. Unweighted herring or squid fished in the burley trail has been effective. In the 25-40m depths good dhufish have been caught along with a few breaksea cod and baldchin groper. Traditional octopus and squid baits have worked well on dhufish, but Zman 7-inch Jerk Shadz Vertrex vibes and the special Ocean Legacy jig in the GOAT colour from Whitey's Tackle have also produced the goods. Kayakers out from Canal Rocks have done well on pink snapper and dhufish when conditions allowed it and salmon have also been doing the rounds. Skippy have often shown up in the snapper burley trails and at Hungry Hollow the odd yellowtail kingie has gatecrashed the burley party. King George whiting have been a reliable catch in Geographe Bay along with the usual hordes of herring. It should be very flat and glassy conditions this weekend throughout the South-West so take advantage of it before the winter months arrive!

Shore-based

Tailor and few pink snapper have been caught at Back Beach, Buffalo, Preston and Myalup beaches with the odd stray salmon passing by. Forrest and Peppermint beaches have produced pink snapper and the occasional salmon. In the Bunbury Cut herring and bream have been the mainstays but chopper tailor are always a chance. Bunbury’s rock walls have held plenty of herring, but the Collie River has been quiet on the bream front over the past week. Squid and herring have been in good numbers at Busselton Jetty and while there have been no reports of pink snapper catches off the deep end of the jetty, we saw another solid mulloway landed by Daniel Liuto (pictured above) only about 400m from shore. Enjoy those ideal conditions this weekend and big thanks to the great team at Whitey's Tackle in Australind for their report!

Freshwater

The bigger your trek is into the Pemberton bush, the bigger the redfin perch get. A couple of nights camping out in the bush produced more thumper redfin perch for Giordano Gervasi @_purelyfishing_ with the @razor_edge_lures UV Oil Grubson working wonders.
Wellington Dam on the left side near the wall has produced reasonable numbers of redfin perch, with some fish over the 40cm mark. Natural-coloured soft plastics and Razor Edge Scout shallow-diving hard-bodies have worked nicely. Downstream from the wall there have been rainbow trout around the 25-30cm mark and a 41cm rainbow was caught on a Berkely Trout Nugget fished under a clear float in the fast-flowing water this week. Redfin perch in the 30-40cm range have been active at Harvey Dam as well, where the water level is quite low. Other good redfin catches at Harvey Dam have come from the Nicklup Causeway, with the bigger perch caught full of insects that were washed down among the run-off debris from the recent cold front. The Pemberton and Yeagarup regions have also fished well for redfin perch. If you catch any great trout or redfin, make sure you message us a snap of the catch to our Instagram page @recfishwest.
Mandurah and surrounds

Mandurah

Calmer weather seems to have slowed the pink snapper action with only modest catches of small snapper from around the Five-Fathom Bank and James Service Reef. King George whiting catches have also tapered off and apart from one or two dhufish caught offshore south of Dawesville, the only major highlights from the past week were several red-hot sessions on chunky tuna which were smashing all sorts of lures including Richter Hockzhead skirts in the the 40m to 50m depths. However, there were other species that came to save the day. Inside the Five-Fathom Bank plump sand whiting up to 30cm have been providing a tasty feed, while on the Five-Fathom itself solid skippy have been caught on the drift or at anchor and brought on the bite with burley. For those chasing squid, the weed banks inside the reef line from Seascapes all the way down past Dawesville have been worth a crack. Back on land, tailor and mulloway fishing has slowed and salmon haven’t really turned up in any numbers, but herring are in plague proportions and taking just about anything thrown at them. Prawn and squid are recommended baits for herring, mainly because they stay on the hook better, but the little scrappers have also been smashing lumo tubes fished under a blob, soft plastics and Halco Twistys in 5g and 10g sizes. Juvenile salmon, herring and skippy continue to be caught from the drop-offs in the estuary, while a young family have been having a ball wading the stretch of beach from Seascapes to Halls Head flicking small baits for impressive mixed bags of flathead, flounder, skippy, herring, small salmon, tailor and even soapy mulloway. Heaps of herring and the odd skippy have been caught from the Dawesville Cut and also at the traffic bridges, while bream have continued to move from the marinas and canals into the Serpentine and Murray rivers. Enjoy those great conditions this weekend!

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Pink snapper have not been as prolific as a few weeks back and sizes are down, but good catches can still be had on the Five Fathom Bank and behind Garden Island from depths as shallow as 15m. A few dhufish have been taken at the Five-Fathom as well, but lumps in around 40m have been more consistent. Skippy have also been biting across Five-Fathom Bank, especially when burley is used, while mulloway have been caught from the shipping channels. The Five Fathom Bank, Stragglers and Mangles Bay have also been reliable for King George whiting this past week, with quite a few fish caught around the magic 50cm mark. The 4-5m depths of Parmelia Bank and Mangles Bay have also fished well for big sand whiting and squid. The shallow reefs behind Garden Island have been the best spots for chunky tailor around the one kilo mark which are taking poppers, stickbaits and unweighted mulies. Herring are pretty much everywhere and biting like blowies in Cockburn and Warnbro sounds and a fresh herring fillet on snelled hooks has accounted for many a snapper in Cockburn Sound this year. Big thanks to Compleat Angler Rockingham for their great tips and enjoy the peachy fishing conditions coming up!

Perth catches
Jayson Spencer @jspencer_fishing and plenty of other fishers found good numbers of pink snapper around Rottnest this week, with more great conditions forecast for this weekend off Perth providing glassy conditions on both Saturday and Sunday.

Boats

At the back of Rottnest Island the 30-60m depths have produced good dhufish with many caught on Vexed Bottom Meats or the more traditional paternoster set-up with octopus or squid as bait. Plenty of snapper have been among them, although sizes have tapered off. Tuna species and Samson fish have been caught there also, while near Rotto's western end some decent yellowtail kingfish have been active on baits and jigs. Mindarie and the Three-Mile Reef have also fished well for dhufish and pink snapper with the deeper waters off Mindarie also holding good numbers of tuna, while the Three-Mile Reef has fished well for King George whiting and skippy. The Five-Fathom Bank and Windmills have been productive for King George whiting and skippy. Mindarie has fished well for squid as have the weed beds from Cottesloe through to South Fremantle and Cockburn Sound. Boaties trolling in the lower reaches of the Swan River have been catching chopper tailor. This is one of the best boating forecasts we've seen for a weekend all year for the Perth region though, so get out there and make sure you're courteous at the boat ramps and around popular fishing spots.

Shore-based

The pink snapper action has quietened down at North and South moles. Drone fishers have caught one or two, but most regular anglers have been content with a feed of herring and skippy and some after-dark chopper tailor at North Mole. South Mole and Bathers Beach have been the better spots for squid as they tend to hold larger patches of weed. City Beach and Floreat have fished well for herring and sand whiting, while beaches north of Quinns have been holding big mulloway in the gutters and the odd pink snapper. In the Swan River chopper tailor have been active and have been feasting on big schools of scaly mackerel around East and North Fremantle, which also suggests mulloway could be worth targeting around the traffic bridges and at the E-Shed. Mulloway around the 3-4kg range have been caught up river from the Causeway and anglers have caught quite a few of them on white and natural-coloured 4-inch soft plastics such as McArthys and Z-Mans in paddle tail and minnow patterns. It could also be worth putting a big rod out for mulloway in tried and tested mid-river locations such as the Narrows, the Old Brewery, Claremont Jetty and Canning Bridge. Bream fishing has been better past the Causeway and as far upstream as Guildford, while in the Canning River bream chasers around Mt Henry Bridge have also landed decent chopper tailor on hard-bodied lures. With gentle easterly winds and low swell, make the most of these conditions this weekend and go wet a line!
