A recent salmon stock assessment conducted by DPIRD has shown that West Aussie salmon numbers are not only very healthy, but the fish being caught are getting older and bigger than previous years! Spring has sprung and we've seen some polished days on the water this past week before the weather turns sour for the lower half of WA over the coming days. It also marks the traditional start of the freshwater fishing season in our South-West and our Troutfest event at Drakesbrook Weir has been locked in for October 21, while Pemberton Trout Festival returns to Big Brook Dam on November 5. Kudos to all competitors who had a crack at the MACK10K competition in Onslow over the weekend as well!

78 BOATS AND 266 COMPETITORS AT THE 2023 MACK10K FISHING COMP!

The 2023 MACK10K in Onslow didn't disappoint, with scores of quality fish landed, including some cheeky billfish such as the sailfish (pictured above, right) landed for the first time by @zoedee13. The great mackie snap (pictured above, left) is Marco Fraschetti @oceansdownunder.

It was a 23.9kg chunky Spanish mackerel landed by John Higgens from team No Bananas that took out the heaviest Spanish mackerel during Munro's MACK10K competition last weekend, while the Overall Champion Boat went to Zanta with a combined 53.52kg of mackies landed!

Broome catches

The waters are warming up around Broome with the creeks turning it up for barra and threadfin salmon catches lately. The crew from @broomebillfishcharters made the most of it, with this fisher pulling a Wilson from Home Improvement where you never see his face.

Boats

Conditions for the boaties in Broome have been good in the afternoons for reef fish with the 20m depths offering Rankin cod and coral trout and out a big deeper red emperor were in decent numbers and sizes. Roebuck Bay produced threadfin salmon around the Fingers, while in Dampier Creek and Crab Creek barramundi catches have picked up nicely. The bigger tides have also livened up threadfin salmon action in both creeks which have also held pretty solid mud crabs full of meat. The fringe reef at Gantheaume Point also offered a few Spanish mackerel when trolling at speeds of 5-6 knots and by flicking stickbaits adjacent to the reef itself. The wind is a bit all over the place as far as direction goes over the next week but it's generally low to moderate winds with lower swell.

Shore-based

As for land-based fishers around Broome the Town Beach Jetty had trevally, bream, javelin fish and queenfish, while bigger queenfish have come from the Port Jetty. At Entrance Point trevally and big queenfish have been active and a few bluebone have also been caught, just make sure you’re fishing at the bottom of the tide if targeting bluebone as that works best. Fishing in Willie Creek was quieter this week, but a few bream and mangrove jack have come from there, while the mouth of Barred Creek held a few trevally. Whiting catches have been good at Cable Beach and Coconut Wells and a few blue-nosed salmon have been landed there too. Barramundi have been widespread in the Fitzroy River but not in great numbers, so if the action is cold just try moving around and looking for structure. Exmouth catches

It's been a hectic week of catches around Exmouth, even by the high quality standards of @onstrikecharters. India became a queenfish queen during her great session while the conditions were ideal.

Boats

Billfish were timid in the calmer conditions off Exmouth this week but black marlin and sailfish along with a few tuna and the odd wahoo were in the 50-200m depths out west, with a few sailfish in as close as 30m depths. Spanish mackerel were in good numbers along the reef lines and a few cobia have been among them. Bottom fishing has been good out west and at the Muirons, with red emperor and goldband snapper in 20-100m depths and bigger goldband taken around the 100m depth mark. Fishing in the Gulf has been hit and miss, but on good days coral trout, trevally, Spanish mackerel, cobia and blue-lined emperor have been caught from isolated lumps on the shoals. Locals say there have been fewer baitfish schools in the Gulf this year which may account for some of the quieter days. Spanish mackerel have also been landed in close off Tantabiddi by kayak fishers and squid have been in good numbers on the weed beds south of town and at the industrial area, with the 2-3m depths generally reliable for a feed. The southerly winds and swell will start to creep upwards between today and Tuesday, so best to get out there soon before it becomes unpleasant.

Shore-based

Land-based fishing this week around Exmouth has been up and down. Fly-fishing was a little quiet despite favourable weather in the Gulf, but it is expected to improve as the water temperature warms up in the next few weeks. Learmonth Jetty has been reliable for squid and bream, while whiting were in good numbers and sizes off the beaches in the Gulf. There were no surprise catches at the town marina this week, but it produced its usual fare of bream, trevally, cod, mangrove jack and queenfish. A few squid have come from the boat ramp at Bundegi where the ever-present baitfish schools have attracted trevally and queenfish, which showed a liking for metal slices. Boat traffic has been busy at Tantabiddi but in the early mornings and late evenings spangled emperor, queenfish, whiting and trevally have been landed. Bluebone, spangled emperor, queenfish and trevally have also come from the Mildura Wreck and Lighthouse Bay. Big thanks to the great crew from Tackle World Exmouth for their tips!

Kalbarri catches

Nicki Hunt @nickihuntfishing came across a couple of silver slabs this week, with the Shimano Talica 12 helping her get this fish past a few pesky sharks.

Boats

Plenty of boats headed out in the calmer conditions this week trolling for the elusive Spanish mackerel, but had little joy despite having a red-hot crack and covering plenty of ground. Most of the crews were visitors to town with the locals content to drop craypots and opting to save on fuel, with some locals crossing the Murchison River on dinghies and doing well at Oyster Reef on decent tailor and pink snapper, with both species around the 50cm mark providing plenty of entertainment. Trolling CiD Shiversticks or Richter Sickbaits at 4-5 knot speeds about 20m out the back of the dinghy is a great way to pick up tailor and other pelagics that might be lurking, especially near reefy areas or by flicking the lures directly into the deeper whitewash. The south-westerly winds will ramp up from Saturday arvo along with the swell, but the mornings early next week should see lower southerlies with a decreasing swell of 3m.

Shore-based

Red Bluff and Pot Alley fished well for pink snapper in the 50-55cm range, while Wittecarra produced a wide range of species including garfish, big sand whiting, herring and chopper tailor. One Wittecarra regular believes he hooked a pink snapper there this week also. At Chinamans, bigger tailor have shown an interest in surface poppers in the mornings and evenings, with fish over 55cm common. Mulloway are still keeping fishers interested in the Murchison River with reports of good fish being caught well up river. Fishers at the marina jetty had a few big runs which they believed were mulloway this week, otherwise the jetty produced small chopper tailor, bream and cod. Good yellowfin whiting have come from the Sand Spit along with a few chopper tailor, while good-sized mud crabs have been caught in the river upstream from the marina jetty. Geraldton catches

Geraldton is hands down one of the best places to track down some solid land-based greenback tailor and Ben Svenson from @northern_addicts made the most of it recently, standing in ankle deep water on the reef to catch and release several fish on surface poppers.

Boats

Dinghy fishers are still getting lots of squid from the bay at Southgates right around to north of the Batavia Coast Marina, but the sizes have been down. Point Moore has held plenty of skippy and good numbers of pike as well as big Samson fish. There have been some chunky Sambos in the 15-20kg range landed there but the 25-30kg models have been unstoppable, so bring some hardcore gear as a backup. Professional crayfishermen on their way to the Abrolhos Islands have reported tuna schools, or possibly bonito, busting up about 15km out from town. The 2m swell and moderate westerly winds will become a bit tedious from midday on Saturday, so today and tomorrow morning are currently the best windows this week.

Shore-based

Beach fishing has improved this week with weed now less of a problem. Down at Southgates several mulloway around the metre mark were landed earlier this week, while school and yellowfin whiting averaging 25cm came from north of Southgates around to Pages Beach. Separation Point was one of the better spots and the best bite times have been in the late evenings to after dark. Just-sized tailor have been keeping the whiting company. Better tailor have come from Drummonds Cove, mainly the middle to the northern end, and the fish have been happy to hit lures or baits. These tailor have been solid, healthy-looking fish and are darker than summer tailor, with locals hopeful tailor numbers will increase in the coming weeks. Coronations has held a good mix of 40-45cm tailor, school mulloway and small whiting. It's not looking ideal for land-based fishers over the next week unfortunately with rough winds and swells returning but hopefully our next report will have better news on the weather front. Lancelin catches

Lancelin's Fishing guru Peter Fullarton from Tailored Treks took Stuart Kenyon to one of the gutters recently and there was a huge abundance of school mulloway everywhere. Awesome fun catching and releasing these silver gems and the occasional pinkie also made an appearance off the beaches.

Boats

Good weather has seen an increase in boats looking to find what options are available. Those heading west found tuna schools out from the 30m depths, while lumps just outside the White Bank in 26-28m depths were holding good schools of Samson fish and skippy. The skippy schools were also aggregating on the shallower reefs with some fish in the 50-60cm range putting up a solid fight. Casting lures to the outer reefs within the bay has also found a few yellowtail kingfish. Smaller boats had a great time casting or trolling small lures in the southern shallows of the bay, where herring have been teeming and boiling the surface of the water. The deeper areas of the bay held snook over the weed beds, while schools of southern garfish have been quick to take up residence in the burley trail while we are awaiting the review for new management measures for the species. Unfortunately boating is looking like a complete no-go from Saturday through to at least Wednesday but hopefully we should get some better weather by the end of next week.

Shore-based

Lancelin jetty saw plenty of herring schooled up under the lights each night and Samson fish have been raiding the jetty at times throughout the day. For the best luck at catching one, live baits work well. The southern bay's beaches have fished well with flathead, yellow eye mullet and herring among the catches. The northern point of the bay has been producing some good sand whiting and chopper tailor, while the beach casters have been finding increased numbers of tailor and small whaler sharks. The best bite times have come from just before dawn with some solid tailor to 50cm common along with a few school mulloway to 70cm. Unfortunately the weather gods aren't playing nice for the next few days but hopefully the swell and wind calms down by later next week. Esperance catches

@lachy_warren found this stunning harlequin fish or 'coral trout of the south' off Cape Le Grand this week, thanks to another great weather window over the weekend.

Boats

Good nannygai have been taken at Figure of 8 Island and Butty Head (almost the greatest fishing location name ever if someone removed the letter 'y' - someone please name an adjacent spot next to it Beavis). Queen snapper have been in good numbers at Lion and Black islands. At Woody Island a big school of 10-15kg Samson fish were hanging around, while Wylie Bay has held good numbers of sand whiting. Most boats have been bagging out on squid while drifting between the Town Jetty and the port rock wall. Today and tomorrow have the calmest swell and wind for the next week as Saturday night is expecting both to go rather haywire on the forecast until at least Wednesday.

Shore-based

The Esperance Land Based Fishing Club are hosting their land based fishing classic on the 16-17th of September and there is a prize pool valued at $8,000! Get your gear ready and head on down to the Deep Sea Angling Club to sign in on the 16th at 9am with a briefing before the green light. Remember, you must be at the sign in to be able to claim any prizes!

Dunn Beach held 8-13kg gummy sharks and they have also been consistently caught at Wharton Beach, while big skippy have come from Rossiter Beach. Fishers are reminded to be respectful of road closure signs and bollards that have been erected in these areas after a recent spate of vandalism has put beach access in jeopardy. Elsewhere, Roses Beach has been good for salmon, school mulloway and big skippy and Warrenup Beach has held some thumping sand whiting. At Observatory Beach a gummy shark was taken during the day by an angler fishing for salmon. The beaches along Great Ocean Drive remain salmon strongholds with a big school parked at West Beach showing no signs of moving. The foreshore has been good for King George whiting as has the Taylor Street rock wall, while the Town Jetty has held heaps of squid and plenty of herring and garfish on sunset. At Bandy Creek Boat Harbour there were big flathead caught from the drop-offs and bream have been taken around the boat hulls and pylons. Today and tomorrow have the best weather windows for land-based fishing as Sunday onwards looks pretty heinous. Big thanks to Southern Sport & Tackle for their report as always!

Great Southern catches

Luke Thom @luke_dhui_world_champ took full advantage of the awesome weather for the south coast last weekend, with this fat and healthy dhufish landed via the @snapbait_aus jig. Was great to see many boats punching out wide from Albany after patiently waiting for the weather gods to put the jam back in their doughnuts.

Boats

A well-earned chunky report for the boaties on the south coast! Many boats took advantage of the excellent conditions last weekend and the catches were widespread. The coral ground offered dhufish, pink snapper, breaksea cod, queen snapper, blue groper, Samson fish, nannygai and harlequin fish with crews that headed out early doing best. A group fishing at Hartmans Beach near Lowlands had a great session on pink snapper averaging 90cm using a freshly caught cuttlefish as bait. Their bycatch wasn’t too shabby either with blue groper, nannygai, breaksea cod and queen snapper also hitting the deck. Kayaker fishers were also keen to take advantage of the glamour conditions on the south coast and a few managed to land dhufish, while kayakers who headed out from Waychinicup caught plenty of pink snapper in the 60-80cm range and hooked bigger pinkies that they couldn’t stop. Off Cheynes Beach breaksea cod and queen snapper have been landed. In King George Sound there were lots of good squid, many with 40cm hoods caught in the 10m depths along with reasonable King George whiting. This morning provided the last boating window until at least mid-next week, with strong winds and swell returning from tomorrow unfortunately.

Shore-based

Squid catches have been very good with the pick of the spots being Frenchman Bay, Emu Point, Middleton and the town marina. Frenchman Bay, Emu Point and the marina have also held herring and King George whiting. Bremer Bay produced a few salmon and 1-2kg skippy have been caught at Cheynes Beach and Nanarup. King George whiting up to 50cm have been caught at Hartmans Beach, which has also held big Samson fish as has West Cape Howe. Dirty water has continued to make bream fishing difficult in local river systems. Near Denmark, herring have been caught at Ocean Beach and the odd salmon has shown up there as well, while Lights Beach held whiting and herring. Batten down the hatches as land-based fishing will be rough as guts from tomorrow until at least Thursday. Big thanks to the crew from Trailblazers in Albany for their tips!

South West catches

@kristy_diable grabbed the peachy weekend weather and this chunky 12.5kg pink snapper with both hands! She took out her sister and extended family to her favourite gutter and there were some stonker fish hanging around, with many other fishers in the South-West finding good pinkies lurking in close to shore.

Boats

Tuna have been going hard either side of Bunbury about a kilometre offshore in 12-14m depths, with surface bust-ups commonly sighted as the tuna schools feasted on whitebait amid diving seabirds. Small metals, jigs imitating whitebait and even saltwater flies have worked well. Similar depths at the Bunbury artificial reef held Samson fish and good skippy, as have the 25-30m depths off Dunsborough. Closer in, sand whiting and squid have been the main catches around Bunbury, while Geographe Bay has fished well for squid and King George whiting with kayak fishers getting their fair share. The nasty winds and swell will make boating uncomfortable until at least Wednesday but hopefully next week's report has a better forecast.

A reminder that fishing closures for blue swimmer crabs start today, 1 September. All waters - coastal, rivers and estuaries - from the Swan River to Minninup Beach (15km south of Bunbury) are now closed to blue swimmer crab fishing from 1 September to 30 November inclusive. These measures are put in place to protect breeding stocks while they are mated and vulnerable to capture. More information can be found in the Blue Swimmer Crab fishing guide by clicking here.

Shore-based

A couple of dhufish have been taking by drone fishers at Preston Beach and from Boranup Beach. Preston has also offered good pink snapper and plump sand whiting. Busselton Jetty was quieter for big fish, offering mainly herring and squid this week, but the weekend’s blow could restart the mulloway and pink snapper action. Collie River produced some nice bream as the water became clearer, while the groynes at Back Beach and the Bunbury Cut held herring, juvenile salmon and silver bream. One or two tailor around the 50cm mark have also come from Belvedere and Buffalo beaches with a few school mulloway among them. Will be tough going fishing off the beach this next week so it could be worth giving the more sheltered freshwater systems a crack, unless you want to target pink snapper in the rougher conditions. Kudos to the crew from Whitey's Tackle for their tips!

Where there is structure, there is usually redfin perch. If you can quietly get up close along a tree trunk that has fallen into the rivers, dams or streams in our South-West, try 'tea bagging' a soft plastic into the darker pockets of water around the structure and it often leads to hook ups. Flicking vibe lures next to trees and working them back to shore also works well.

Logue Brook Dam has held plenty of solid redfin perch as have Harvey and Wellington Dam, with some fish crossing the 40cm mark. The upper reaches of the Collie River has also fished well for redfin, especially amongst the structure in the deeper pockets of water. Fishing the deeper sections of the dams and rivers with soft plastics in general has worked well and kayakers have landed plenty of fish by tea-bagging plastics down next to tree trunks. Quite a few rainbow trout have been sighted in all of the South-West dams but they showed little interest in lures this week. Further south at Lefroy Brook solid perch and small rainbow trout have been caught on hard-bodied minnow lures. Fat sand whiting have been thick inside Five Fathom Bank with 8-10m depths the sweet spot for them. Burleying up right on Five Fathom almost guaranteed a feed of skippy this week. In 25-50m depths right along the coast boaties have been having fun trolling for tuna. A crew targeting likely lumps for King George whiting in 30m depths were surprised to come across a school of hungry yellowtail kingfish with some Samson fish among them. Whiting have been caught in the estuary off the Dawesville Cut, while King George whiting have been performing well in 20-24m depths out from Dawesville, with some big kidney-slappers in 30m-plus depths. The Cut has mainly held herring with a few skippy and whiting mixed in and it has been a similar story for the Mandurah traffic bridges. Flicking prawn baits in the Serpentine and Murray rivers has accounted for bream at times. Pink snapper were caught on beaches south of town this week, while the beaches in general have offered herring, whiting and a few chopper tailor with the better spots being a kilometre or so either side of an entrance to the ocean where the water is clearer and saltier. Both boating and land-based fishing is looking locked out from Saturday through to Tuesday but it could bring the pinkies in following the wind and swell. SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Squid have been everywhere in Safety Bay and Cockburn and Warnbro Sounds, where clear water this week has really turned them on and depth hasn’t been a factor. King George and sand whiting have also been plentiful in the Sounds and around Garden Island, with both whiting species often coming from the same locations. The 9m depths of Parmelia Bank held good numbers of KG's and sand whiting, while a lot of King George have been in really close in 2-3m depths within Mangles Bay. Big skippy have been caught on Five Fathom Bank and behind Garden Island yellowtail kingfish and amberjack were taken earlier this week. Tailor have been in the whitewash around Mewstones and Stragglers. Beach fishing continues to improve and the stretch from Port Kennedy down to Madora Bay has offered reasonable tailor and the odd pink snapper. The weekend’s rougher conditions combined with Thursday’s full moon could bode well for pink snapper and mulloway from these locations. These beaches have also fished well for whiting and herring, while Long Point held chopper tailor and herring. Squid have been plentiful at Woodman Point and the Ammo Jetty and both locations have held herring. The Rockingham and Palm Beach jetties have fished well for squid and herring have been caught there in big numbers at times. Scaly mackerel have also been hanging around both jetties. Land-based squidding has been reasonable at Point Peron. You'll probably get drenched if you go for a fish this weekend due to rough conditions but fingers crossed the weather forecast next week is more promising. Perth catches

It's always great to see youngsters ticking off a new species being caught! Harry Roberson and his dad Jeremy went out chasing tuna and Harry ended up landing his first yellowtail kingfish, which given its size would be less than two years old. Great work Harry!

Boats

King George whiting fishing has been excellent in depths from 10m way out to 70m. Most KG's have been in the 35-45cm range and some of the better spots have included 20m depths north of Windmills, straight out from Hillarys and the 10m depths off City Beach. If you're chasing 50cm-plus fish, the 30m depths around Rottnest Island performed best. At Hillarys and City Beach squid and sand whiting have been common. Tuna numbers have waned, but they are still being caught in 40m depths, especially around Rottnest where a few yellowtail kingfish and smaller Samson fish have been caught as well. Good-sized skippy have been caught around Five Fathom Bank on micro jigs and squid baits by boaties using chook pellets as burley. Off South Fremantle kayak fishers have been doing well on squid. The exposed reefs around Carnac Island have held some decent tailor and a few pike, while chopper tailor have been caught by dinghy fishers trolling in the lower reaches of the Swan River. The peachy weather this week is about to get blown away from Saturday through to Monday, but hopefully next week's report will have a friendlier forecast.

All waters - coastal, rivers and estuaries - from the Swan River to Minninup Beach (15km south of Bunbury) are now closed to blue swimmer crab fishing from 1 September to 30 November inclusive. Shore-based

North Mole has fished very well for squid and has also produced tailor around the 40-45cm mark and quite a few snook, while herring have been plentiful when burley is used. South Mole held herring but it was outperformed by Bathers Beach this week for squid. Chopper tailor have come from Floreat and City Beach along with a few herring, while anglers casting blobs for herring from the reefs around Cottesloe found many of the herring they were catching were missing some of their tails, which is likely from bigger tailor. The next day curiosity got the better of them and they returned to throw out unweighted mulies and caught a good feed of tailor including one or two over 50cm. Big tailor have also come from the Two Rocks area where they have shown a liking for Richter Plugs and CID GT Ice Creams. In the Swan River bream activity has moved further downstream with Heirisson Island, Canning Bridge on a slack tide and the Narrows among the better spots. Soft plastics in the grub style have been effective and the bream bycatch has included plenty of flathead around 40cm and a few soapy mulloway. At the Narrows a couple of big mulloway were caught this week along with chopper tailor. More chopper tailor have also been active at Blackwall Reach, while in the lower reaches of the Swan flathead have been taken on hard-bodied lures. You will likely need a poncho if you're fishing over this weekend with some stronger winds and swell expected, but pink snapper will certainly come prowling in close off the beaches and maybe both Freo moles if you're brave enough to face it. Just wear the right footwear, fish with a friend and analyse the conditions before wetting a line. Big thanks to Anglers Fishing World in Freo for their tips!
