Fishing Report
22/09/23
As of this Saturday, September 23 until midnight on Sunday, October 8, fishers in the West Coast Bioregion (between Kalbarri and Augusta) can target west coast demersal species off the boats. Reminder, fishing for pink snapper off the land or boats from 1 August until 31 January in Cockburn and Warnbro Sound is prohibited to help protect pink snapper spawning aggregations. Pic of the Week!

Now THAT'S a gummy shark! This beast that crossed the 25kg mark put up one hell of a fight for Jayden La Touche near Esperance, who posted this great snap on to the W.A LANDBASED FISHING CLUB Facebook Page.

Broome catches
We love seeing 'metrey' barra doing the rounds and one late night mission out to the 'croc pit' as Max Sampson @max_out_fishing calls it saw this 102cm golden beauty landed.

Boats

Crews have been scouting far and wide in the lead-up to this weekend’s Broome Billfish Classic competition with a few black marlin reported south-west of town about 45km out, but no reports of blue marlin other than the one caught a few weeks back. Rankin cod and red emperor have been taken from the reefs in 50m depths but sharks have been a problem, so it has paid to move around and don't bother trying to beat them as that is a losing battle. Tuna and Spanish mackerel have been in good numbers in Roebuck Bay and crews have found them by keeping an eye out for bait schools. Crab Creek and the Fingers fished well for threadfin salmon and barramundi, with trolled vibes and Jackall Squirrel hard-bodied lures working well. The Fingers in particular also held reasonable numbers of mud crabs. The winds are swirling in different directions this week but will stay at low to moderate levels along with a decreasing swell, so it should be pleasant on the water.

Best of luck to the hundreds of competitors and Broome locals having a crack in the 2023 Apex Kununurra Barra Bash! Our Recfishwest crew is up there to have a friendly yarn with the locals and wet a line themselves in one of the world's best sportfishing locations. Check out their Facebook page for more details!

Shore-based

There has been a steady increase in the number of catches of mud crabs throughout the local creeks and @_jkingy experienced one of the finest WA dining experiences with his mates this week.

Town Beach Jetty was reliable for queenfish and small trevally while the Port Jetty produced the same species plus the odd bluebone and giant trevally. The bigger tides made creek fishing difficult earlier this week but bream and mangrove jack catches are expected to improve at Willie and Barred creeks. Coconut Wells and Cable Beach produced good numbers of whiting, while barramundi activity picked up in the Fitzroy River at Langi Crossing and Telegraph Pool. For the best tips and gear for your fishing expedition, make sure you visit the helpful pros at Tackle World Broome for advice and they will provide details on spots with the best access for a flick.
Exmouth catches
The women on the @aussiechicksfishing page catch some solid fish and these two Spanish mackies speared this week by besties @rubixcube_ and @ninas.oceanadventures were plucked from an enormous school that had circled them while they were on the bottom looking for jobfish. Great work ladies!

Boats

Conditions have been average off Exmouth but boaties have made the most of the afternoon weather windows. Billfish activity was steady out west with most boats sighting five or so per day and both sailfish and black marlin around the 30kg mark were taking trolled skirts and garfish baits in 50-200m depths. Wahoo have been among them and in the 25-40m depths Spanish mackerel have been hitting deep-diving hard-bodies on the troll with six knot speeds working well. A lot of ruby snapper have been caught from the 90-120m depths, while goldband snapper were active in 150m depths. Closer in, the 10-30m depths held Rankin cod and spangled emperor. Fishing at the islands has been difficult but better opportunities have presented themselves in the Gulf, which held schools of tuna. Cooper and Camplin shoals have held plenty of baitfish and fished well for tuna and also shark and school mackerel. Rankin cod and blue-lined emperor have been taken from the bommies in the Gulf and boats trolling in 8m depths with deep-diving lures around 160mm in length that can get down to 6m depths have done well on coral trout. Squid are plentiful off Town Beach, the industrial estate and VLF Bay in as little as 1.5m depths, while down near the Bay of Rest blue swimmer crabs have been caught but a bit of effort is required as the crabs are on the move and it has been a matter of finding the right depth to drop nets for them. The southerly winds are staying at moderate levels this week with a 2-2.5m swell hanging around, so expect it to be a bit choppy on the water.

Shore-based

Shore fishers in the Gulf have encountered good numbers of tuna with Halco Twistys and small stickbaits doing plenty of catching. Learmonth Jetty and the oceanside rock wall at the Town Marina have been among the better spots for them. At Learmonth Jetty whiting and bream have been taken in good numbers on peeled prawns and small trevally and queenfish have been in the tuna schools that have passed through. Squidding has been good from the jetty too as well as from the rocks at the industrial estate, Pebble Beach and the Town Marina’s oceanside rock wall. Tourists and backpackers at the Town Marina have been getting good feeds of yellowfin whiting as well as mangrove jack and bream. At Bundegi, hardyhead schools have been harassed by queenfish, tuna and trevally which have been taking metal slices, stickbaits and white soft plastics. Up around the Lighthouse and the Mildura Wreck crab baits or crab imitation lures have accounted for spangled emperor and bluebone. The wind made Tantabiddi difficult to fish early in the week, but it offered spangled emperor and whiting. In Wapet Creek a few mud crabs have been caught. Given the stronger swell and southerlies this week, it's best to try and find sheltered areas if wetting a line. Big thanks to the great crew from Tackle World Exmouth for their tips!

Kalbarri catches

Boats

Unfortunately not much action occurred on the boats this past week. Things have remained quiet in the lead-up to the demersal season reopening on Saturday with most boats content to drop pots for rock lobster, or else target sand whiting at Jakes Bay and Red Bluff which have both seen good numbers and sizes of fish. Apart from lighter southerly winds early on Saturday morning, the moderate to high southerly winds should increase between Saturday and Tuesday with the swell creeping upwards from 2m to 3m, so it will be a choppy journey out wide. If you're heading out for a bottom fish for demersals in relatively close, send your pics in to the Recfishwest Instagram page @recfishwest.

Shore-based

Wittecarra was very consistent this week, producing good numbers of 35-40cm chopper tailor along with dart and bull herring. Down at Pot Alley a 70cm pink snapper was caught, while the reefs at Oysters and Frustrations were holding big tailor. Mulloway action died down in the Murchison River as did fishing in general in the system, but bream and a few cod have been taken from the Marina Jetty and also further up river, while mud crab catches have been good in these areas too. Chopper tailor have been around the jetty in the evenings, while warmer weather should fire up yellowfin whiting activity on the Sand Spit. The Northampton District Angling Club fished at Lucky Bay last weekend where club members caught big tailor, mulloway up to 10kg and a couple of pink snapper. Big thanks to Dean from Kalbarri Sports and Dive for his tips as always!
Geraldton catches

Boats

Boaties had to work hard to find clear water but managed good hauls of squid at Separation Point, Pages, Southgates and the Batavia Coast Marina this week. Separation Point also offered snook and pike, plus school mackerel to 70cm. The weather gods aren't playing nice again this week as far as wind and swell goes, with strong southerlies and an undulating swell of 2-3m making it tough for the boaties. It could calm down towards Thursday or Friday next week.

Shore-based

Weed was an issue on local beaches this week but the reefs near town have produced tailor up to 60cm as well solid skippy and big tarwhine. Good-sized whiting have been caught at the breakwater, Pages Beach, town rock walls and Batavia Coast Marina. The marina also produced squid when clear water was found. South of the Greenough River mouth anglers have done well fishing from the reefs at low tide and caught good tailor on poppers and stickbaits. Flat Rocks held good-sized tailor and school mulloway, while Drummonds headed north of town offered chopper tailor. Bigger tailor have come from Coronations, where a big land-based snapper is believed to have been caught this week. Big thanks to Geraldton Sports Centre for their report as always!
Lancelin catches
Cooper Watson @cooperrwatsonn took his old man Dion Watson @fishtraptwo out for a drop recently and he landed an incredible trifecta that would make any fisher jealous including a 135cm yellowtail kingfish, 147cm amberjack and a 142cm Samson fish.

Boats

The swells have been up, making for a risky beach launch. Most anglers have been holding off heading out in anticipation of the looming new demersal season kicking off tomorrow. Lancelin Angling Club have scheduled a competition this Saturday to coincide with the coming two weeks being open. Weigh-in at the clubroom will be at 3.30pm and make sure you drop in for a look if you’re holidaying in town. Conditions for the weekend are a little less than ideal for the opening of the demersal season, although still manageable. Smaller boats might fare better staying in close and chasing some inshore pink snapper, which are a good chance if you burley up. There is still likely to be surges at the beach for launching on the morning high tide through this weekend and into next week, with conditions expected to ease later in the day for the retrieve as the tide falls and the waves break on the outer reefs.

Shore-based

Recent storms accumulated a lot of sea weed in the shore break, with low tides throughout the week and consistent swell making beach fishing very difficult with only a few fish landed. Lancelin jetty was the saviour, with lures flicked throughout the night finding tailor, herring and even the odd salmon. Weed along the beach has started to consolidate into areas with thick blankets out to sea, while other spots are becoming fishable. Pre-dawn starts will find sufficient water in the gutters to soak a few baits this weekend, while next week should see tides improve for the morning sessions. During the evenings there will be very low tides. Beaches have been very soft and steep, making them suitable only for experienced drivers with capable 4WD’s. If you're unsure, switch to the backtracks to find your honey hole. Big thanks to Peter Fullarton for his tips as always and make sure you check out his Tailored Treks fishing tours!

Esperance catches
The winner of the photo comp during the recent Esperance Land Based Fishing Classic was Billy Vibart @fishingbv featuring his little toddler, Frankie! The judging criteria was to show off lovely Esperance and the beauty in the fish being caught and we think this snap is a rightful victor.

Boats

Despite the average conditions boats that headed out wide caught good hauls of nannygai in the 60cm range and breaksea cod up to 2.5kg in 40-80m depths. One boat that managed to get out to the continental shelf was rewarded with a couple of small blue-eye trevalla and plenty of nannygai on the way back in. Woody, Black and Observatory islands offered big queen snapper and Samson fish up to 20kg. Esperance Bay held plenty of big squid, while Wylie Bay fished well for herring and King George whiting. Sand whiting also have been in good numbers there in 10m depths, with small strips of squid tentacles working well. Apart from the nice window that rolled through this morning with lighter northerly winds, it's a bit all over the shop as far as wind direction goes this week but it should stay at moderate levels with a swell of 2m decreasing through to 1.2m by Tuesday. Around Wednesday morning currently isn't looking too bad.

Shore-based

Congrats to all the 129 competitors who had a crack in the recent Esperance Land Based Fishing Club Classic! The major winner went to one angler who landed a 13kg gummy shark, but there were plenty of other great catches that took home some top quality prizes. For more info, visit the ELBFC Facebook Page.

Gummy sharks in the 10-15kg range have been plentiful from beaches east of town, while a gummy shark caught by Jayden La Touche west of town (as seen in our pic of the week above) weighed more than 25kg. Beaches west of town held salmon around 5kg with Fourth, Observatory and 10-Mile beaches the better spots. Further out towards Fanny Cove tailor up to 2kg and skippy up to 5kg were taken. The James Street rock wall produced King George whiting averaging 500g, while the Taylor Street and Town jetties fished well for herring, squid and garfish. Bandy Creek produced King George whiting in the 30cm range, while at Stokes Inlet and Woody Lake bream over 40cm were caught in decent numbers. Big thanks to Southern Sport & Tackle for their report as always!

Great Southern catches
Chris Dixon @dixonsfishing and his pal Dan had a great session on the south coast recently getting stuck into some yellowtail kingies. If you are planning on fishing off the rocks, make sure you follow the lead of these two by fishing with a friend, wearing a lifejacket, wearing suitable shoes and analysing conditions on arrival to suss out the swell and waves before wetting a line. You can find more tips on our Safe Fishing page.

Boats

Poor weather kept most boaties at home this week but many will be heading out on Sunday in what promises to be better conditions. A few boats have been working hard in King George Sound by targeting King George whiting and squid, with the latter doing the rounds in good sizes and numbers. Reports of small tuna came from the Sound as well and herring and skippy were also caught there. The 2m swell is hanging around but Sunday morning until midday could see a repeat of the calmer conditions seen today, with lighter winds providing a window for the boats to head out.

Shore-based

DPIRD has advised that from 1 October 2023, fishing will not be permitted for greenlip abalone between Busselton Jetty and Shoal Cape in the Stokes National Park, west of Esperance. While this closure is necessary, Recfishwest is disappointed it has come to this as it was completely avoidable. You can find more details about this here.

Most shore anglers have been content to hibernate but those who headed out were rewarded with good squid catches at the Town Marina, Middleton, Frenchman Bay and Emu Point. It’s fair to say squidding has been much more rewarding than fishing this past week, but a few herring, small skippy and whiting have still come from the Town Marina and Emu Point. Bream fishing in the King and Kalgan rivers was quiet but there has been a good run on cockle and mussel imitation lures, which have been a reliable option for anglers. At Cheynes Beach there were herring and solid skippy landed. Big thanks to the crew from Trailblazers in Albany for their tips!

South West catches
Another week, another bag out on squid for Trudy Morehouse @squidqueen.wa off Busselton. The 3.5 sized @harimitsu_official jigs got the job done.

Boats

Tuna were plentiful in 10-15m depths on both sides of Bunbury and boaties keeping an eye out for baitballs and surface bust-ups have fared best, especially when using small metal slices and stickbaits. In depths of 40m+ a few Samson fish have been jigged up. King George whiting have been a little scarce out from Bunbury but sizes have been good, while Geographe Bay held plenty of smaller King George whiting, sand whiting and skippy. Squidding was better in Geographe Bay too, especially for kayakers in depths around 5m, but boaties have found squid in various depths off Bunbury. In the Leschenault estuary dinghy anglers trolling hard-bodied lures have been doing well on 35-40cm tailor. Most days this coming week are looking decent for the boaties, which is perfect timing with the demersal season opening for two weeks from Saturday, September 23. Midday tomorrow is looking a tad windy, so maybe aim for the morning. Sunday currently looks best.

Drone fishers did well on pink snapper at Preston Beach but the pinkies were in better numbers and closer in at Mindalong Beach, where mulloway either side of one metre were also caught. Tailor action has been quiet, but Preston Beach held a few as has Back Beach, which also offered a few herring. Herring and tailor have been hit or miss at Bunbury Cut, while the Coliie River produced a few bream usually between the 30-35cm mark. Busselton Jetty continued to fish well for pink snapper and mulloway and herring and squid have been in good numbers there as well regardless of where you're casting. Kudos to the crew from Whitey's Tackle for their tips!

Second cast for @westyboys at Big Brook Dam in Pemberton landed this cracker of a brown trout. With the freshwater season kicking into full swing, make sure you make the effort to venture into our fresh waterways in the South-West.
High water levels have made fishing for redfin perch a little tricky at Wellington and Harvey dams, but quite a few broodstock trout are kicking around in good numbers especially in the feeder creeks. A good session was enjoyed on redfin perch earlier this week at Harvey Dam with Blighty’s paddletails and Halco RMG Poltergeist XDD Crazy Deep hard-bodies doing a fair bit of catching, with the key being finding the right depth the fish are feeding at. Waroona Dam offered rainbow trout with trolled Atomic Hardz Jerk Minnows in the 65mm size picking up a few fish. At Drakesbrook Weir rainbows in the 35-45cm range have been taken on Gulp Berkely Gulp Trout Dough. The upper reaches of the Murray River both north and south of Bob’s Crossing held decent rainbow trout. If you catch any great trout or redfin, make sure you message us a snap of the catch to our Instagram page @recfishwest.
Mandurah and surrounds
Persistence paid off for @jake_b_fishing near Mandurah this week, with one arvo session producing a couple of lovely pinkies from a gutter during the choppy conditions.

Mandurah

Several big yellowfin tuna were lost at the boat in 90m depths west of town last weekend. The tuna were feasting on baitfish in the strong Leeuwin Current and showed interest in trolled skirts, deep-diving minnow lures and rigged garfish baits. Tuna have also been in big numbers at the back of Five-Fathom Bank, which held plenty of skippy right on the bank and lots of sand whiting in closer. Big King George whiting were landed on broken ground in 23m depths out from Dawesville and in 8m depths on the Avalon Reef. Land-based fishers and boaties have also caught whiting at the estuary end of Dawesville Cut, which continued to be a herring stronghold. Herring, tarwhine and whiting have provided family-friendly fun at the Mandurah traffic bridges, while the middle reaches of the Serpentine River produced big bream. Yellowfin whiting have fired up during the occasional warm spells with a staff member from Tackleworld Miami bagging half a dozen whiting on lures in a quick session in waters pretty much right behind the store. Boaties found plenty of tailor in the estuary as well, with most around 40cm but a few nudging 50cm, while juvenile salmon have been mixed in with them. Pink snapper catches were good from beaches north and south of town, especially areas with a bit of structure, while herring, whiting and chopper tailor were caught from beaches north of Silver Sands. Boaties found squid in good numbers at James Service Reef. Conditions will improve for the boats between Saturday and Monday, so have fun and make the most of it this long weekend. Make sure you pay a visit to the great crew from Tackle World Miami for the best tips and gear!

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Most boaties have been biding their time waiting for the demersal season to reopen on Saturday, but those who headed out found King George whiting in good numbers near Garden Island. There were also plenty of King George whiting, sand whiting and squid in Cockburn Sound and squid, herring, sand whiting and a few KG's in Mangles Bay. Skippy were caught in good numbers on Five-Fathom Bank, while at the back of Garden Island tuna have been active. For land-based anglers pink snapper catches have been good off the beach at Secret Harbour, which also held bigger tailor nudging 50cm, herring and whiting. Tailor, herring and whiting are also worth targeting at Port Kennedy. Decent tailor have also been caught at the Ammo Jetty along with a few herring. The jetty also fished well for squid, while Woodman Point held the same species. Other good squid spots have been Point Peron, the Coogee rock walls and the Penguin Island sand spit with white glow jigs producing the best results. Long Point was also worth a fish for herring, tailor and whiting. Midday from Saturday through to Monday morning is looking decent for all forms of fishing, have fun out there and just remember there is no fishing for pink snapper in Cockburn or Warnbro Sound until 31 January to protect pink snapper spawning aggregations. You can find more details on the closed area here. Big thanks to Compleat Angler Rockingham for their tips!
Perth catches
A Swan River tailor over 40cm is commendable, a 50cm Swan River tailor is a beast. TK got stuck into some chunky specimens with the Gan Craft Jointed Claw 70s Glidebait producing the goods. Tailor love a bit of choppy and dirty water in the Swan and flicking stickbaits around with a good underwater action is a good way to entice the strike. Photo: @compleatanglernedlands.

Boats

Squid were in good numbers out from South Fremantle and down towards Coogee. King George whiting have been in similar locations but the sizes have been average. Sand whiting catches tapered off a bit but most boats are managing to get a few mixed in with their King George tally. King George whiting have also been in good numbers at Windmills. Skippy action picked up with anchoring on drop-offs and sending out a burley trail working well for anglers using whitebait, peeled prawns, micro jigs and soft plastics. Skippy were also active at Three-Mile Reef and inshore off Mindarie and Hillarys. Waters around Rottnest held solid skippy and big King George whiting, but not in great numbers, while the island’s West End offered Samson fish around the metre mark with the odd yellowtail kingfish a welcome bycatch in 20-30m depths. Floating lures such as Duo Tide Minnows thrown into the white-water at Stragglers, Mewstones and Rowboat Reef accounted for chunky tailor, while tailor in the 30-40cm range have been taken by dinghy anglers trolling in the Swan and Canning rivers with better spots including Point Walter, Blackwall Reach and between the Canning and Mt Henry bridges. While the 12-14 knot southerly winds are sticking around this long weekend there are plenty of sheltered areas that should still produce the goods if you decide to head out and make the most of the demersal season opening up. Sunday through to Wednesday morning currently look best.

Shore-based

Plenty of snapper were hanging around after the blow went through last week and North Mole was a reliable spot for them with small, whole squid baits accounting for some big pinkies. From the beaches, the snapper have preferably shown a liking for fresh sand whiting. North Mole also held good numbers of herring, which is another excellent snapper bait if used fresh. South Mole had steady results offering squid, a few skippy and lots of herring, especially when burley was used. A lot of anglers have been targeting squid with traditional baited jigs which is usually herring or sand whiting fished under a float, while for anglers using regular jigs bright orange and pink colourations have worked well, as have jigs with rattles such as Shimano Sephia models. Around the Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour anglers have been catching bream and tarwhine. Reefs, beaches and rockwalls from Quinns to Yanchep offered reasonable tailor with drone fishers targeting snapper also getting bigger tailor as bycatch. Smaller tailor have come from Brighton Beach and Swanbourne. In the Swan River system bream activity was a little inconsistent but better spots have been up towards Shelley Bridge in the Canning River and at Heirisson Island. Burswood was also a decent bream spot, where soapy mulloway up to 80cm have also been caught. On warmer days flathead have fired in the Swan River’s middle to lower reaches and tailor have been in the Swan River from as far up river as Burswood, where they have been snipping off soft plastics meant for bream all the way down to North Fremantle. Small hard-bodied lures have worked well on the choppers. At the Narrows, mulloway around the metre mark have been among the tailor schools. Best of luck if you're heading out and big thanks to Anglers Fishing World in Freo for their tips!
